Ariela J. Gro s s<br />
Ariela Gro s s’ book Double Character: Sl a ve ry<br />
and Ma s t e ry in the Antebellum <strong>Southern</strong><br />
C o u rt ro o m was published by Pr i n c e t o n<br />
Un i versity Press. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Gross presented a<br />
faculty work s h o p, “Be yond Black and W h i t e :<br />
Cultural Ap p roaches to Race and Sl a ve ry,” at<br />
<strong>USC</strong> in October and was an invited speaker at<br />
the 25th annive r s a ry Po rter L. Fo rt u n e<br />
Symposium on Sl a ve ry at the Un i versity <strong>of</strong><br />
Mississippi, where she discussed law, culture<br />
and slave ry. In addition, she presented a paper<br />
titled “Be t ween Race and Na t i o n :<br />
Bl a c k / Indian Identity in the So u t h e r n<br />
C o u rt room,” at the annual meeting <strong>of</strong> the<br />
American Studies Association in De t roit. He r<br />
“ Be t ween Race and Na t i o n” paper was listed<br />
recently among the top-10 most fre q u e n t l y<br />
d ownloaded papers on the Social Science<br />
Re s e a rch Ne t w o rk. She discussed fre e d o m<br />
and slave ry on the American frontier as a<br />
panelist at the American Society for Legal<br />
Hi s t o ry annual meeting in Princeton, N.J.<br />
She has been elected to serve a thre e - year term<br />
on the American Society for Legal Hi s t o ry’s<br />
b o a rd <strong>of</strong> dire c t o r s .<br />
William J. Hoye<br />
William Hoye was appointed chair <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Law</strong><br />
<strong>School</strong> Admission Council’s 2001 annual<br />
meeting and educational conference. De a n<br />
Hoye led a discussion for minority pre - l a w<br />
advisers attending the Pre-<strong>Law</strong> Ad v i s e r s’<br />
National Council conference in San Di e g o. In<br />
addition, he presented a session on how<br />
admissions decisions are made at the Pre p<br />
2000 Conference for pre-law advisers fro m<br />
historically black and Hispanic colleges and<br />
u n i versities. He also gave a presentation on<br />
the financial aid process at the Dallas <strong>Law</strong><br />
<strong>School</strong> Fo ru m .<br />
Ehud Kamar<br />
Ehud Kamar presented “Price Di s c r i m i n a t i o n<br />
in the Ma rket for Corporate <strong>Law</strong>” with<br />
Ma rcel Kahan, a New Yo rk Un i versity law<br />
p ro f e s s o r, at a law and economics workshop at<br />
Ha rva rd <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong>. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Kamar also<br />
p resented the paper at Tel Aviv Un i ve r s i t y<br />
Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>, the annual meeting <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Canadian <strong>Law</strong> and Economics Association at<br />

Daniel M. Klerman<br />
Daniel Klerman presented “The Selection <strong>of</strong><br />

L i t i g a t i o n” at the American <strong>Law</strong> and<br />
Economics Association annual meeting in<br />
New Yo rk last Ma y. He also presented his<br />
paper “Female Pr i vate Prosecutors in 13th-<br />
C e n t u ry En g l a n d” at a legal history work s h o p<br />
at Tel Aviv Un i versity and at an<br />
In t e rd i s c i p l i n a ry Center faculty workshop in<br />
He rzliya, Israel. His paper “Settlement and<br />
the Decline <strong>of</strong> Pr i vate Prosecution in 13th-<br />
C e n t u ry En g l a n d” was recently listed as an<br />
all-time top-10 download for experimental<br />
and empirical studies on the Social Science<br />
Re s e a rch Ne t w o rk; several additional papers<br />
written by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Klerman have been listed<br />
recently as top-10 downloads for various other<br />
journals on the network. In August, Pro f e s s o r<br />
Klerman spoke at the National Bu reau <strong>of</strong><br />
Economic Re s e a rch Summer Institute in <strong>Law</strong><br />
and Economics. He also presented his paper<br />

K a ren A. Lash<br />
K a ren Lash was listed as a “rising star in the<br />
s t a t e’s power stru c t u re” in Ca l i f o rnia <strong>Law</strong><br />
Bu s i n e s s m a g a z i n e’s annual roundup <strong>of</strong> the<br />
100 most influential attorneys in the state. In<br />
addition, Dean Lash has been named co-chair<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>California</strong> Access to Ju s t i c e<br />
Commission, which works to increase the<br />
d e l i ve ry <strong>of</strong> legal services to poor and<br />
moderate-income <strong>California</strong>ns. The commission<br />
is composed <strong>of</strong> judges, lawyers, political<br />
appointees and re p re s e n t a t i ves fro m<br />
C a l i f o r n i a’s religious, labor and education<br />
communities. Her co-chair will be Justice Earl<br />
Johnson <strong>of</strong> the <strong>California</strong> Court <strong>of</strong> Ap p e a l ,<br />
who, among other things, formerly taught in<br />
the <strong>USC</strong> <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s clinical program. De a n<br />
Lash also has been named to the U.S. Di s t r i c t<br />
C o u rt Magistrate Judges Merit Se l e c t i o n<br />
Panel. Chaired by District Court Ju d g e<br />
