30 THE STANDARD STYLE / ENVIRONMENT August 3 to 9 2014 How to organise a cleanup in your area Michael Nott FOLLOWING on from last week’s article about the inspirational work that Miracle Missions and Clean and Green have been doing for the last few years, here is some information and tips on how you can organise a cleanup campaign in your own area. It’s not as difficult as you think! Hopefully this advice will empower you and others in your community to come together to make our neighbourhoods better, safer, healthier and more attractive places to live, work and play in. Cleanup campaigns also help to alleviate the pressure on local councils, many of which are struggling with insufficient funding and inadequate resources. Projects like these assist in bringing people together from different walks of life, unite people with a common goal and help to build a community spirit. We can all co-operate and work together to build a better nation. It’s our responsibility to care for our environment. First of all, don’t be too ambitious and try to do things too quickly – this can sometimes result in insufficient planning and poor preparation. Allow yourself at least a month to get ready and to bring all the various stakeholders together. Start off by paying a visit to your local council offices and asking them for permission to do a clean up. It’s a great way to get to know your councillors and for them to get to know the people in their wards. Once you have the relevant people on board you’ll find organising the project so much easier. Select a venue in the community to hold your first meeting. It could be a school hall, a church or at a local business or community centre. Write a letter inviting all interested parties to attend a meeting to discuss your proposed project. Obviously you need to invite your local municipal officers, but include the local ZRP, school heads and teachers (both primary and secondary), ask them to invite students’ parents, include shop keepers, factories, businesses and of course residents. It’s all about the community, so try to get as many people involved as possible. At the first meeting map out your objectives. Clearly state where you want to hold the cleanup, the date and the time and explain what your main goals are. Your goals could be collecting litter, clearing drains and waterways, removing posters and cutting the grass verges. Other objectives could include repainting pedestrian crossing markings to make it safer for children going to school or encouraging corporates to ‘adopt’ a roundabout or an island. Try to get email addresses and phone numbers so that you can set up a database and keep people informed about future initiatives. Ask for help from the community to design and print a flyer with information about your project and then ask schools or church groups – or even your local soccer team – to distribute the flyers to residents in the area. Have a list of the equipment you’ll need, like black rubbish bags, gloves, safety vest, shovels and wheelbarrows and so on. These costs should be shared by all the people and organisations involved – you’ll be surprised by how willing people are to assist in their own communities, whether it’s a tin of paint for the pedestrian crossing or a few plants to beautify a neglected traffic island. You can also ask for help with transport to take the collected rubbish to the dump site or the appropriate recycling depots. Ask community members to help with refreshments for the volunteers, whether it’s a cool drink, tea or some sandwiches. This is good time to identify and approach prospective donors and ask companies to donate rubbish bins for future use to help keep the area you’ve cleaned in better condition. Consider contacting the media, like newspapers and magazines, so that they’re aware of where and when the cleanup will take place. Coverage in the media can inspire other communities to act and it’s good to give exposure to companies and organisations which have made donations. It can also help instil a sense of pride in the people taking part and it motivates others to join in for future projects. Write a detailed letter outlining your proposal and send copies to your local authorities. In Harare send a copy to Mrs. P. Mukudu, (email: mukudupatricia@gmail.com) and Eng. P.M. These are the people to contact if you’re in Harare – if you’re in Bulawayo or Mutare or any of the other towns across the country find out who the relevant authorities are in your area. Send a copy to your Councillor, your District Officer and the Officer in Charge of your local ZRP requesting police clearance. Now you’re all set to go! On the day meet at the agreed point and assign groups to do particular tasks or cover specific areas. Remember it’s an opportunity to draw awareness to the Principles of Waste Management – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover and have a group separating waste for recycling. Hand out safety equipment and tools. It’s a good idea to have buckets of water, soap and towels ready for washing hands at tea time or lunch time. Take some ‘before’ photos and some photos during the project. It’s great for everyone to see what a difference they’ve made and you can send the pictures to Clean and Green to add to their slide show and to keep a record of communities helping themselves. After the event remember to send letters of thanks to all those involved and send a feedback report to your local authorities. By now you should have been able to identify other like minded and proactive individuals and organisations. Keep in touch to discuss longer term projects, such as taking care of and improving public spaces like parks. Once you’ve made a start you’ll find the community coming together and the momentum will keep growing. You’ll discover that you’ve motivated people to care about their environment and fostered increased awareness. Children and teens in particular will be receiving education and training about environmental issues and after all they’ll be responsible for our future.
