MUSIC DEPARTMENT CONCERT TOUR TO GERMANY <strong>2012</strong> 68 members of the Junior and Senior Choirs embarked upon their concert tour to Germany early on 10 July. The next few days provided a busy schedule, incorporating concerts and educational visits. Musical highlights included the very warm reception received at a large, impressive residential and nursing home near Koblenz. The students’ second concert, in the picturesque spa town of Bad München, was a thrilling experience. Their most enthusiastic audience ever consisted of more than 150 tourists and locals, who demanded “Encore” time and time again. The choirs responded with performances of superb quality which were confident, polished and mature. An educational tour of the musical instrument museum at Rüdesheim followed, with young German guides speaking impeccable English engaging pupils with colourful demonstrations of self-playing instruments, such as those found in fairgrounds. The lighter moments of the tour included a variety of humorous and serious performances by staff and pupils at the entertainment evening, held at the hotel. One of the winners, Ellie Thomas, sang a song she had composed herself and went on to win Newport’s Got Talent. The city of Deutsches Eck in Koblenz was viewed by cable car and the boat trip along the Rhine was enjoyed by everyone. The final day was spent relaxing at Phantasialand Theme Park. The students all feel very grateful for being allowed to experience such a fantastic area and broadening their outlook in so many different ways. UWCN GRADUATION CEREMONIES: On 7 September, 36 members of our Senior Choir performed at the annual graduation ceremonies of the University of Newport, held at their Caerleon campus. The choir performed some of the music from our Germany tour to a packed audience of 1200 in the morning ceremony and 800 in the afternoon. They received very enthusiastic responses from both audiences. We give credit to the hard working students who gave up their time so early in the term to represent our school at such a prestigious event. AWARDS’ EVENING: Members of the Jazz Band and Senior Choir entertained students, parents and guests at the school Awards’ Evening on 6 November. Year 13 flautists, Jessica Hughes and Mairghread Yule, opened the evening by performing a selection of duets. The Jazz Band performed ‘Soul Sister’, ‘Summertime’ and ‘St Thomas’ while the Senior Choir sang the Zulu song ‘Jabula Jesu’, John Rutter’s anthem ‘For the Beauty of the Earth’ and a foot-tapping arrangement of ‘When The Saints Go Marching In’.
STRICTLY JAZZ: Congratulations to Strictly Jazz, a quartet of Year 13 musicians, who performed with Risca Male Voice Choir on 3 November to raise money for Action for Children. Harriet Davis, Matthew Griffiths, Alex Hay and Allysha Perryman performed a programme of jazz classics. Well done also to Ellie Thomas, Year 9, who, as winner of Newport’s Got Talent, was selected to perform at the switching on of the <strong>Christmas</strong> lights in Newport on 22 November. the interval and after the concert. The Senior Choir, Junior Choir, a quartet of Bassaleg Electric Drummers and the combined Bassaleg Orchestra of Wind Band and String Orchestra members took to the main stage. They performed Mars from The Planets by Holst and an arrangement of The Lord of the Dance with Eluned Williams on solo violin with processional drummers included! The Senior Choir performed three songs to rapturous applause, ably accompanied by Mr Keates, Allysha Perryman, Mrs Hornsby, Alex Hay, Matthew Griffiths, Jacob Lloyd and Lloyd Pearce. The Bassaleg Electric Drummers featured Matthew Griffiths, Alex Hay, Jacob Lloyd and Jordan Price in a performance composed by Mr D Powell. CONCERT WITH PRIMARY SCHOOLS: 170 of our musicians performed alongside pupils from four of our feeder primary schools at St.David’s Hall in Cardiff on 14 November. Members of the Brass Ensemble greeted shoppers and concert-goers with entertainment on the steps of St David’s Hall. The Jazz Band and Strictly Jazz entertained during The grand finale to the evening was a performance by 250 pupils of a medley of songs from ‘The Lion King’, featuring choirs from High Cross, Marshfield, Pentrepoeth and Rogerstone Primary Schools, directed by Mrs S Davies. The performance was enhanced by Mrs N Coker from High Cross school and by our own Jacob Lloyd and Alex Hay on drum kit and bass guitar. It really was a delight to share in the amazing talent of our Junior School pupils. We are indebted to the teachers from Gwent Music Support Service who provide instrumental tuition and support of the highest quality for our students. BLUE PETER: Congratulations to Bradley Butler-Huish, Year 10 who, as a member of Only Boys Aloud, sang on Blue Peter to raise money for Children in Need and earned himself a coveted Blue Peter badge. REMEMBRANCE SERVICE: At the annual school Remembrance Service on 9 November, Joseph Hopkins, Year 10 and Emily Whiting, Year 11 gave moving performances of the Last Post and Reveille in Forge Hall while Vinay Ramji, Year 13 sounded the Last Post in Griffin Building so that all pupils in the school could pause for a minute’s silence. At a special service in Forge Hall, sixth form music students performed ‘The Day Thou Gavest’, ‘Lord, is Ended’ and all students sang the Remembrance hymn ‘O God, Our Help in Ages Past’.
