D & T DEPARTMENT
YOUNG CHEFS’ CLUB
This term saw the launch of Year
7 & 8 Young Chefs’ Club. The aim of this
club is to learn about nutrition and healthy
eating and to develop independent cooking
‘survival’ skills. These young chefs have learnt
how to handle ‘high risk’ food, whilst making a
stir fry. They have investigated how to hide fruit
and vegetables in popular dishes like choc chip
and courgette muffins and banana flapjacks to
increase their nutritional value. This half term is
the ‘Great Bassaleg Bake off’. They will be
making bakery classics like shortbread, bread
rolls, spring rolls and chocolate brownies. The
club meets every Tuesday between 3.20 pm -
4.30 pm in T10. New members are welcome!!
CHILD DEVELOPMENT
As part of the Child Development GCSE
course Year 10 students were asked to
research
and
design a
powerpoint
on
disabilities
and the
effects on
the family.
The
standard
was
exemplary.
The
students
made links with local support groups and centres for disabled
children and some students referred to their own personal experiences of
living with disabilities within their own family. All students were
professional in their approach and were able to talk about their findings
with confidence and with a high level of
understanding and empathy. As part of
our community links the Year 12 Health and Social group have an
opportunity to tour the local Children’s Centre - Serennu, and view the
specialist resources available to disabled children, as well as talking to
the specialised staff there.
and Jack won the greatest number of daily challenges. Honorable
mentions for Alex Adams in Year 13 and Georgia Christensen also
