Community<br />
The <strong>Stillwater</strong> <strong>Area</strong> Public <strong>School</strong> District is home to more than 58,000 residents living in 18<br />
communities in the St. Croix River valley. The district stretches 30 miles along the scenic St.<br />
Croix River, from Marine on St. Croix south to Afton, and covers approximately 150 square<br />
miles. Our family-oriented communities offer the advantages of being within 20 miles of<br />

Curriculum<br />
<strong>Stillwater</strong> <strong>Area</strong> High <strong>School</strong> (SAHS) offers a comprehensive curriculum of more than 140<br />
courses, providing preparation for college-bound students, post-secondary vocational students<br />
and students planning to enter the workforce following graduation. The school offers a wide<br />
variety of courses to build a strong educational foundation in language arts, mathematics,<br />
social studies, science, business education, family and consumer science, industrial technology,<br />
fine arts, health and physical education. Students have the opportunity to study world<br />
languages, including French, Spanish, German and American Sign Language (ASL). To view<br />

Rigorous Course Opportunities<br />
<strong>Stillwater</strong> <strong>Area</strong> High <strong>School</strong> offers a six-period day (with no zero-hour option). Students may<br />
enroll in three enriched (accelerated) courses: Honors English in 9th grade, Enriched English<br />
in 10th grade, and Accelerated Chemistry and Physics (a two-year course). These enriched<br />
courses do not reflect a weighted grade. Students may enroll in an Animal Science College<br />
in the <strong>School</strong>s (CIS), Concert Choir, Concert Orchestra, Concert Wind Symphony, and Music<br />
Theory College in the <strong>School</strong>s (CIS) courses along with the following advanced placement<br />

Graduation Requirements for the Class of 2012<br />
The Board of Education requires a minimum of 43 credits in grades 9-12. Required classes<br />
include 8 credits each in language arts and social studies, 6 credits each in mathematics<br />
and science, 1 credit each in health and physical education and 2 credits in fine arts.<br />

Extracurricular Activities<br />
<strong>Stillwater</strong> <strong>Area</strong> High <strong>School</strong> students can participate in 34 varsity sports throughout the year.<br />
In addition to athletic activities, students can participate in 28 extracurricular clubs including<br />
debate, music, student government, National Honor Society, theater and other clubs (e.g. Chess,<br />
Eco-Leaders, DECA, FFA, STAR/SPAA & SADD). Newspaper and yearbook, however, are not<br />
offered as extracurricular activities. Students can participate in the newspaper and yearbook by<br />
enrolling in these elective courses within the six-period day.<br />
Honors and Awards<br />
• State and national awards for student publications for the Kabekonian (our yearbook),<br />
the Pony Express (our student newspaper), and the Stylus (our creative arts magazine).<br />
Awards include the Minnesota High <strong>School</strong> Press Association Best of Show-First,<br />
Journalism Education Association and Quill and Scroll Awards.<br />
• Longest streak of superior ratings in Minnesota State High <strong>School</strong> League in musical<br />
competitions involving the bands (Concert, Varsity, Symphonic), the orchestras<br />
(Concert, Varsity, Symphonic and Chamber), the choirs (The <strong>Stillwater</strong> Choir, Varsity<br />
Men, Varsity Women, Belle Chanter, Vagabonds, Select Women and Sophomore<br />
Chamber Choir) and the Music Listening Teams. Nationally recognized for concerts<br />
in New Mexico, Georgia, Arizona and Illinois. Routinely invited to the St. Olaf Choir,<br />
Concordia and Dorian Festivals.<br />
• Repeated recognition from the AP College Board in the 2011 school year in which 86<br />
students were named AP Scholars, 46 students were named AP Scholars with Honors,<br />
45 students were named AP Scholars with Distinction and three students were named<br />
AP National Scholars.<br />
• Since 1913, <strong>Stillwater</strong> has had 55 Minnesota State High <strong>School</strong> League State team<br />
athletic championships, including adapted sports. In the State, SAHS placed fourth in the<br />
Challenge Cup, which ranks all schools according to Athletics and Academic competitions.<br />
Grading System<br />
Beginning with the Class of 2010, <strong>Stillwater</strong> <strong>Area</strong><br />
High <strong>School</strong> has a dual ranking system for grading<br />
in all of our Advanced Placement (AP) and College<br />
in the <strong>School</strong>s (CIS) courses. These courses are<br />
weighted with a 1.2 multiplier to establish the<br />
weighted rank. SAHS awards academic letters to<br />
students who earn a GPA of 3.6 or above.<br />
