The Stillwater Area Public School District is home to more than 58,000 residents living in 18
communities in the St. Croix River valley. The district stretches 30 miles along the scenic St.
Croix River, from Marine on St. Croix south to Afton, and covers approximately 150 square
miles. Our family-oriented communities offer the advantages of being within 20 miles of

Curriculum
Stillwater Area High School (SAHS) offers a comprehensive curriculum of more than 140
courses, providing preparation for college-bound students, post-secondary vocational students
and students planning to enter the workforce following graduation. The school offers a wide
variety of courses to build a strong educational foundation in language arts, mathematics,
social studies, science, business education, family and consumer science, industrial technology,
fine arts, health and physical education. Students have the opportunity to study world
languages, including French, Spanish, German and American Sign Language (ASL). To view

Rigorous Course Opportunities
Stillwater Area High School offers a six-period day (with no zero-hour option). Students may
enroll in three enriched (accelerated) courses: Honors English in 9th grade, Enriched English
in 10th grade, and Accelerated Chemistry and Physics (a two-year course). These enriched
courses do not reflect a weighted grade. Students may enroll in an Animal Science College
in the Schools (CIS), Concert Choir, Concert Orchestra, Concert Wind Symphony, and Music
Theory College in the Schools (CIS) courses along with the following advanced placement

Graduation Requirements for the Class of 2012
The Board of Education requires a minimum of 43 credits in grades 9-12. Required classes
include 8 credits each in language arts and social studies, 6 credits each in mathematics
and science, 1 credit each in health and physical education and 2 credits in fine arts.

Extracurricular Activities
Stillwater Area High School students can participate in 34 varsity sports throughout the year.
In addition to athletic activities, students can participate in 28 extracurricular clubs including
debate, music, student government, National Honor Society, theater and other clubs (e.g. Chess,
Eco-Leaders, DECA, FFA, STAR/SPAA & SADD). Newspaper and yearbook, however, are not
offered as extracurricular activities. Students can participate in the newspaper and yearbook by
enrolling in these elective courses within the six-period day.
Honors and Awards
• State and national awards for student publications for the Kabekonian (our yearbook),
the Pony Express (our student newspaper), and the Stylus (our creative arts magazine).
Awards include the Minnesota High School Press Association Best of Show-First,
Journalism Education Association and Quill and Scroll Awards.
• Longest streak of superior ratings in Minnesota State High School League in musical
competitions involving the bands (Concert, Varsity, Symphonic), the orchestras
(Concert, Varsity, Symphonic and Chamber), the choirs (The Stillwater Choir, Varsity
Men, Varsity Women, Belle Chanter, Vagabonds, Select Women and Sophomore
Chamber Choir) and the Music Listening Teams. Nationally recognized for concerts
in New Mexico, Georgia, Arizona and Illinois. Routinely invited to the St. Olaf Choir,
Concordia and Dorian Festivals.
• Repeated recognition from the AP College Board in the 2011 school year in which 86
students were named AP Scholars, 46 students were named AP Scholars with Honors,
45 students were named AP Scholars with Distinction and three students were named
AP National Scholars.
• Since 1913, Stillwater has had 55 Minnesota State High School League State team
athletic championships, including adapted sports. In the State, SAHS placed fourth in the
Challenge Cup, which ranks all schools according to Athletics and Academic competitions.
Grading System
Beginning with the Class of 2010, Stillwater Area
High School has a dual ranking system for grading
in all of our Advanced Placement (AP) and College
in the Schools (CIS) courses. These courses are
weighted with a 1.2 multiplier to establish the
weighted rank. SAHS awards academic letters to
students who earn a GPA of 3.6 or above.
Cumulative GPA is calculated for grades 9-12.
