or, footnotes (and abbreviations)<br />

– <strong>the</strong> farts (and belches) on a page<br />

While a very small number of footnotes are useful <strong>in</strong><br />

unobtrusively direct<strong>in</strong>g a reader to <strong>the</strong> source of a quote,<br />

generally <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> reclusive doma<strong>in</strong> of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tellectual,<br />

or those look<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>in</strong>tellectual status, try<strong>in</strong>g to prove a<br />

po<strong>in</strong>t by referenc<strong>in</strong>g ano<strong>the</strong>r, as if by mention<strong>in</strong>g ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

source for <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>formation adds some sort of weighty<br />

authority or gives credence to <strong>the</strong>ir flatulent po<strong>in</strong>t. A fart on<br />

a page <strong>in</strong>deed! Are we <strong>the</strong>n to believe that <strong>the</strong> source of an<br />

unexpla<strong>in</strong>ed po<strong>in</strong>t is correct just because it was published<br />

elsewhere? This is nonsense, a literary nepotism based on<br />

what? This k<strong>in</strong>d of postur<strong>in</strong>g, this elitist ‘ibid.’ nonsense<br />

masquerad<strong>in</strong>g as researched writ<strong>in</strong>g, attempt<strong>in</strong>g to bolster<br />

<strong>the</strong> importance of a text littered with superscripted numbers<br />

and give it an air of <strong>in</strong>tellect where it is absent, is just <strong>in</strong><br />

reality lazy writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
