The velocities sound waves The velocities of the various kinds of sound waves can be calculated from the elastic constants of the material concerned, that is the modulus of elasticity E (measured in N/m2), the density p in kg/m 3 , and Poisson's ratio μ (a dimensionless number). for longitudinal waves: for transverse waves:
