pAtients Are ‘GlAd mAyo is speAkinG up’ Patricia simmons, M.d. new medical director of government relations patricia Simmons, M.D., is the medical director for Mayo Clinic’s new Division of Government Relations. In this role, she is the physician leader for Mayo Clinic’s interactions with federal and state governments and other organizations. The new division encompasses the work of state legislative activity in Arizona, Florida, Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the work of the Health Policy Center and other federal government relations. Dr. Simmons came to Mayo Clinic in Rochester in 1977 for her residency and fellowship and has remained ever since. She is chair of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, a consultant in the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and a professor of pediatric and adolescent medicine. Mayo Alumni interviewed Dr. Simmons about this new leadership position. why did you want to serve in this role? I’ve been privileged to be in leadership positions at Mayo Clinic as well as on the “front lines,” and I have a passion for our values and model of care. Mayo is a wonderful place for people to receive health care, be educated and do research. I want to play a role in preserving the extraordinary thing that Mayo Clinic is. Serving at the decision-making table has given me insights and knowledge. I know to whom to go when I don’t have the answers I need. I want to use those resources and experiences in the broader environment. I also have had leadership positions outside of Mayo, such as serving on the Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota since 2003, including chair of the Board. The process involved in becoming a public servant and that engagement helped to stimulate my interest and provide experiences and relationships for my new role in Mayo’s government relations. Of course, I will protect my patient care responsibilities. One reason I took on this new role was because I care so much about patients. I don’t want to shortchange my primary reason for being at Mayo Clinic. Patricia Simmons, M.D., medical director of Government Relations, says she is grateful to Drs.
