The Most Holy Trinity Sunday—May 26th, 2013

Dear Parish Family of St. Thomas,
Second Homily
As you know, St. Thomas of Villanova is a wonderful Parish Family because of the gift of
your presence and your ever-present generosity. And we have a great Pastoral Staff who is
committed to serving you and seeing that Christ's message of peace and hope is brought to
all. I am personally grateful for all the hard work and the many, many hours which our staff puts in for so little
pay. (Their bonus is the plenty of prayers which are said for them by me!)
It is with deep regret that I announce the resignation of Mr. John LaRoche effective at the end of this current
academic year. John has been our Principal for the past seven years, and he was my first hire at
St. Thomas. John informed me on Sunday, May 12th that he might be moving. And on Wednesday, May
15th, he told me that he was offered and accepted a position in Florida.
I would like to share his letter which was sent this week to all of our school families:
Dear St. Thomas of Villanova Community:
It is with incredible sadness that I am informing this great school and parish community that I will be
resigning my position as Principal, effective at the end of this school year.
I would like to thank everyone for all their prayers and support during the last seven incredible years
that I have been the Principal. To all the parents, students, staff and parishioners, I can never thank
you enough for all the understanding and compassion you have given me on my journey at St. Thomas.
As many of you know, my wonderful wife Rita was an elementary school Principal and has been
retired for several years. We have been considering downsizing in anticipation of both of us being
retired one day. Well, I am not retiring, yet. We decided to put our home on the market four weeks
ago just to see what might happen, and it was under contract in just six days. The very next day I
received a call on some property that I have had for sale the last two years in North Carolina, and it
sold. Then things just started to fall into place. My daughter, Jackie, is going to attend graduate
school at the University of Florida, and as fate would have it, I was also offered a position at St.
Francis Catholic High School in Gainesville. I am very excited to be joining their staff as the
Assistant Principal with additional duties teaching History and maybe even coaching a little football
or baseball. Everything has happened incredibly fast, and I feel certain that the hand of God is
guiding my family and me every step of the way.
I have been incredibly blessed to be a part of the St. Thomas of Villanova family. I will miss everyone,
and you will all be in my thoughts and prayers every day. This is an awesome parish and school
community, and it will always remain one of the most cherished gifts that God has ever given to me.
God Bless,
John LaRoche, Principal
2

Apparently for John things have moved very quickly, and now they must move quickly for us. While it is late
in the academic year, we are confident that we will find a most capable replacement.
The elementary school principal is the administrator, faith and instructional leader of the local school and
serves as the executive officer of the local governance board in a Catholic school of the Archdiocese of
Chicago. In addition, the principal oversees the fiscal vitality of the school. The elementary school principal
is hired by and is accountable to the Pastor for the operations of the school.
I have had many meetings these last two weeks with the Archdiocese of Chicago, the Catholic Schools Office
and the Assistant Superintendent as we must follow their guidelines and process. Therefore, in consultation
with them, I have formed the Principal Search Committee. All of the respective parish constituencies are
represented on this Search Committee. Our fellow parishioners have very graciously accepted my
appointment of them to this important endeavor . In addition to myself, the members of the Committee are:
Jane Murguia ( a non-school parent parishioner)
representing the St. Thomas of Villanova Parish at large
Mike Nix, (a current School Board member, school parent and former chair of our Parish Finance )
representing the school parents and the School Board
Mary Brinkman (a long-time faculty member and Assistant Principal at St. Thomas)
representing the school faculty
Ron Schaefer (Parish Manager)
representing the entire Pastoral Staff
Ann Johnson, (a member of the Parish Finance Committee and of the Parish Pastoral Council)
representing both important advisory entities
We have already begun to meet as a committee, and we have met with the Assistant Superintendent of
Schools, and we have already planned out our strategy, and we have already begun to interview prospective
candidates. (Yes, its been a busy time with numerous meetings.) But we guarantee that we will find the best
principal for our school. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask me. Meanwhile, please keep
this committee and its work in your prayers. I will keep you posted as we continue this very accelerated but
thorough process.
John’s faithful leadership and guidance has well served our parish school families. And he has been a key
Pastoral Staff member supporting our many parish ministries. He is a gentle giant who truly loves and cares
for our children. We wish John well as—like our 8th graders— he graduates now to High School! Pray for
John LaRoche and his family as they begin a new chapter in their life’s journey. And, pray for us.
Your Pastor,
Rev. Thomas R. Rzepiela 3

Support Funding for
Textbooks for Catholic Schools
Legislation to restore funding to the Textbook Block
Grant Program has been introduced in the Illinois
General Assembly. The Catholic Conference of
Illinois is working to include it in next year’s budget.
House Bill 2321 and Senate Bill 2178, provide $12.5
million for textbooks and other learning materials.
The loss of this funding over the past few years has
been a negative impact on the budgets of non-public
schools.
Members of the Catholic Conference of Illinois have
met with legislative leaders about this bill, and they
have asked them to implement a broad grassroots
involvement.
Please contact your state representative and state
senator and urge them to support funding in the
state budget in the next fiscal year. The easiest way
to participate is to visit the following web site to send
SEEKING TO UNDERSTAND THE TRINITY
If you sometimes find the Church's teachings
incomprehensible, be encouraged by today's Gospel.
Recognizing how bewildered his disciples have become,
Jesus says, "I have much more to tell you, but you cannot
bear it now." Then he promises that "the Spirit of truth"
will come to make things clear.
Even with the coming of the Spirit, we never fully
understand. Today we hear the ancient poetry of the book
of Proverbs, singing of God's wisdom "playing on the
surface of his earth," delighting in humankind. We hear
Paul boasting of his joy--not only in the blessings God
sends, but even in "our afflictions."
Theologians wrestle with the mystery of the Trinity;
with the help of the Spirit they make that divine mystery
a little more clear to the Church. We understand a little.
But mostly we listen, we pray, and we ask the Spirit for
more clarity.
ROSE FOR LIFE
In Memory of
JOHN & TRUDY LANGOWSKI

On Graduations and Trinity Sunday
We’ll see the “For Grads and Dads” advertisements pretty soon,
but right now I’m strictly in the graduation mindset, so Father’s
Day can wait a while. I just came from a family event celebrating
two graduations on my wife’s side. Her nieces, actually. One of
the nieces, Stacy, earned her paralegal degree a few weeks
back. In truth, I’m not even sure what that means, but I guess it’s
better than a single legal… The other niece, Jessica, got her
nursing degree, too. We all had pizza and cake and talked about
future plans, and I know that such events are playing out all
across the country as young people everywhere receive their
parchments and prepare to step out into the world. In one sense, I
envy the graduates. In another, I’m glad it’s all about them.
There are lots of songs addressing graduation day. I’m partial to
the Beach Boys’ effort. The lyrics open with: “There’s a time for
joy/ a time for tears/ A time we’ll cherish through the years/ We’ll
remember always… Graduation Day.” Then there’s a verse about
senior prom and dancing till three and pledging hearts from thee
to me. But tucked away further into the song are lyrics that remind
me of the Father, the Son and the Spirit whom we celebrate both
individually and collectively today on this Solemnity of the Most
Holy Trinity. These lyrics goes like this: “Though we leave in sorrow/
All the joys we’ve known/ We can face tomorrow/ Knowing
we’ll never walk alone.”
The Internet offers different origins of the phrase, “Today is the
first day of the rest of your life,” but regardless of the source, the
words capture the essence of graduation day. It is an end, and
yet a beginning. Sort of like Jesus telling his disciples in today’s
Gospel of things to come. The passage is taken from Christ’s
farewell discourse, which he shares
with his friends on their last night together
before Christ’s arrest in the
garden. “I have much more to tell
you” he says, “but you cannot bear it
now. But when he comes, the Spirit of
truth, he will guide you to all truth.”
Jesus concludes this passage by
explaining that just as he shares all
with the Father, so does he share all
with the Spirit.
I have heard the Trinity referred to as
Creator-Redeemer-Sustainer, but I’ve also heard it referred to as
Presence-Wisdom-Power; and as I see it, graduation pulls all of
these notions together. Surely the parents are the creator/
presence element of Graduation Day. Somebody brings the
graduates into the world, after all, and is then present to them. In
a sense, the graduate himself or herself is the redeemer/wisdom
element, because while school is hard, the students’ own hard
work ultimately bring them to their caps and gowns. And family
and friends assume the sustainer/power role, encouraging and
inspiring the graduates to keep going, to reach beyond themselves,
to use the gifts they’ve been given for the good. I celebrate
Stacy and her paralegals and Jessica and her nursing degree
and all graduates everywhere today. I also celebrate the
Father, Son, Spirit, because like I said, there’s a definite connection.
No question. Graduations have an affinity with the Trinity…
