Design considerations for sharrows include:
• It is desirable to have 14 foot wide travel lanes when possible, but not
necessary.
• At corners with turn lanes, bikes should be
directed to merge into the full travel lane.
• Sharrows should include a bicycle symbol
and a chevron (double directional arrow).
Standard stencil sizing is approximately 3
feet 3 inches wide by 9 feet 3 inches long.
• Where parking is permitted, stencils for
sharrows should be at least 11 feet from the
curb or 4 feet from on-street parking (5 feet
preferred) so they do not encourage
bicyclists to travel in the “door zone”.
• The optimal location for the symbol is the
center of the lane so they can be easily seen
by motorists.
Sharrow in Use
• Not placed at the approach of intersections, lest they direct cyclists to the
wrong location on the road.
