Page 18 Volume 14, Issue 1 ELECTRONIC PROPOSAL SUBMISSION WORKSHOPS HELD The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) held an electronic grants initiatives workshop entitled, Electronic Proposal Preparation and Submission, at the Southern University John B. Cade Library. Three full-day workshop sessions were held February 16-18, 2009, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The presenters were Dr. Lynn and Jeremy Miner of Miner and Associates, Inc. This “hands-on” interactive workshop was designed to educate faculty, staff, and community participants on how to successfully navigate the electronic proposal submission process via Grants.gov, eRA Commons, and other electronic submission avenues. The participants were given an on-line “walk-through” demonstration of the Grants.gov submission features. The presenter also provided tips and shortcuts on how to navigate the system with ease. “FROM RESEARCHER’S LAB TO REALITY” FALL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY WORKSHOPS During the Fall of 2008, the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) hosted two intellectual property workshop sessions entitled “From The Researcher’s Lab To Reality.” The session was held Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center. The goal of the sessions was to provide the basics of disclosing intellectual property and the commercialization process. The sessions focused on useful tool for researchers to protect their ideas and resulting inventions. The presenters were Dr. Rose Glee, Director of Technology Transfer at Florida A&M University, and Michael Vallan, Esq. of Vallan & Lawrence, L.L.C. Approximately 40 members from the Baton Rouge campus and community, and the Agricultural Research Center attended the session. National Sponsored Programs Administrators Alliance (NSPAA) of HBCUs, Inc. 15 th Annual Conference held in New Orleans, La. June 9-12, 2009 Southern University and A&M College was one of the host universities in planning the NSPAA conference. Other institutions were: Dillard University; Grambling State University; SUNO; SUSLA; and Xavier University. The Office of Sponsored Programs was represented by two staff members, Ms. Norma Lemond and Mr. Ashley Alexander, to assist in ensuring a successful meeting. The theme was, “Enhancing Institutional Competitiveness in Research and Sponsored Programs.” Some of the workshop sessions were: “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Programs”; “Issues and Best Practices in Managing Intellectual Property in a University Setting”; “Export Controls: What Universities Should Know”; “Electronic Research Administration”; and “Best Practices for Avoiding Non-Compliance”. Representatives from several Federal Agencies were there to impart agency updates and funding opportunities. Proudly representing Louisiana were Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu and Southern University’s President Ralph Slaughter as guest speakers. In sum, participants were able to network with other Sponsored Program administrators about various issues that pertain to Research Administration. We gained new insights on positioning our institution to maximize opportunities in research.
