First Freshmen Put SUNYIT in the Spotlight

Area newspapers, TV and radio
stations often do “back to
school” stories to show what’s
new at the region’s colleges.
And this fall, they found plenty
of material at SUNYIT.
Reporters and photographers
from Utica, Rome, and
Syracuse newspapers, as well as
Utica-Rome TV and radio stations,
focused on the arrival of
SUNYIT’s first class of freshmen.
The Syracuse Post-Standard
published a feature on the
first day of classes with quotes
from President Mason H.
Somerville, two staff members,
and two freshmen. The Utica
Observer-Dispatch shadowed a
freshmen on his first day of
classes and published the results
the next day. WKTV previewed
the start of the semester,
sending a crew to the last
Orientation session on the Friday
before classes started.
Coverage of the early part of
the semester continued with
radio and TV reports on Convocation
Sept. 4. A videographer
from WKTV captured
the procession across campus
after interviewing President
Somerville and guest speaker
Dr. Lawrence Sturman, director
of the Wadsworth Laboratory.
