<strong>Improving</strong> <strong>services</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>support</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>older</strong> <strong>people</strong> <strong>with</strong> <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> problems<br />

2.9.5 Specialist <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> care<br />

Specialist <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> <strong>services</strong> have an important role to play.<br />

n<br />

Between 32 <strong>and</strong> 50 per cent of inpatients in <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> hospitals <strong>and</strong> facilities<br />

149, 150<br />

are aged 65 <strong>and</strong> over.<br />

However, very few <strong>older</strong> <strong>people</strong> have access to specialist <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> care:<br />

n<br />

n<br />

n<br />

Only 6 per cent of <strong>older</strong> <strong>people</strong> <strong>with</strong> depression receive specialist <strong>mental</strong><br />

<strong>health</strong> care. 151<br />

Most <strong>older</strong> <strong>people</strong> who take their own lives have diagnosable <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong><br />

problems but only a small minority are in contact <strong>with</strong> specialist <strong>mental</strong><br />

<strong>health</strong> <strong>services</strong>. 152<br />

There are fewer community <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> teams, crisis resolution teams <strong>and</strong><br />

assertive outreach teams <strong>for</strong> <strong>older</strong> <strong>people</strong> than <strong>for</strong> younger <strong>people</strong>.<br />

2.9.6 Acute hospitals<br />

Older <strong>people</strong> use many hospital <strong>services</strong> <strong>and</strong> many of them experience <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong><br />

problems in this setting.<br />

n One in seven <strong>older</strong> <strong>people</strong> are admitted to hospital each year. 153<br />

n<br />

n<br />

Older <strong>people</strong> occupy two-thirds of NHS beds.<br />

Up to 60 per cent of <strong>older</strong> <strong>people</strong> admitted to hospital will have or develop<br />

<strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> problems. The three most common are delirium, depression<br />

<strong>and</strong> dementia. 154<br />

Acute hospitals are an important setting <strong>for</strong> interventions. Admission to hospital can<br />

provide the first opportunity to diagnose a <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> problem.<br />

However, many <strong>older</strong> <strong>people</strong>’s <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> needs are not recognised or met.<br />

n<br />

Over 50 per cent of <strong>older</strong> <strong>people</strong> <strong>with</strong> delirium are not diagnosed.<br />

n Rates of treatment <strong>for</strong> depression are as low as 9 per cent. 169<br />

2.9.7 Care homes<br />

Mental <strong>health</strong> problems are extremely common among <strong>older</strong> <strong>people</strong> living in<br />

care homes.<br />

n At least 40 per cent of <strong>older</strong> <strong>people</strong> in care homes have depression. 155<br />

n 50-80 per cent have dementia. 156<br />

n Up to 30 per cent of residents have anxiety, which is often overlooked. 157<br />

n<br />

Care homes are also important settings <strong>for</strong> <strong>people</strong> <strong>with</strong> schizophrenia <strong>and</strong><br />

other long-term <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> problems who have been discharged from longstay<br />

hospitals.<br />
