Mot du Président...
Dear members,
I
hope you have all had a wonderful
summer with a lot of rest and relaxation.
Many of us escape to vacation
destinations, and many of us stay home to
materialize those home improvement
plans.
Has there been any chemistry invading
your life, even on your vacation escape?
You bet. I saw new personal care
commercials on TV getting more scientific
in their approach. I read articles in the local
newspapers about our health, and even
films.
I have to comment on a new film which
was recently released in the video stores. It
is called “Perfume, the story of a
murderer.” Apparently this is an adaptation
of a very popular and successful novel
published decades ago. I think it was a
marvelous film. It captivated my attention
as a film connaisseur and as a scientist.
The film drew me into a time when perfume
science was in it’s infancy in France. A
time when an industry had evolved from
the essential oils distilled from those
wonderful fragrant flowers from the region
of Grasse. The story compels the viewer to
understand that fragrance composition is a
science which at the time was merely
beginning and grossly understood. At the
time, artisanal suppliers and merchants
sought after a magical potion which would
be exclusively available to the elite of the
population.
Today, this science is now highly refined
and established, utilizing many analytical
tools and scientific methods. However,
there is always a dependence on our
senses, especially our sense of smell. The
organoleptic properties of a perfume
composition can never be interpreted more
rapidly than the subjective nose.
Chair’s note...
The nose perfoms the measure of Art
within the Science. However, not all noses
are the same. A trained nose will offer
more value. This is why we encourage you
to come and participate in our Education
Day on Perfume and Fragrance offered by
Charabot France - October 2007. Don’t
miss out on this opportunity to enhance
your education, and be a better scientist.
Also please remember that August 28th we
will have the honor of guest speaker Dr.
Arie Benchetritt, plastic Surgeon. You can
learn about the most advanced nonsurgical
and surgical techniques in plastic
surgery. These include: Non-surgical
elimination of fat “bulges”, Skin tightening
of the face, abdomen, thighs. New
treatments for Rosacea, Acne .
Photodynamic Therapy. Photo-Facials
using Intense Pulsed Light. Lasers for
wrinkles / spider veins / leg veins / hair
removal. Injections for wrinkles. And much
more. This speaker can help us chemists
understand many aspects of cosmetic
clinical procedures, as well as the
equipment used for these treatments, and
the objectives for the treatment. As a
cosmetic chemist, we can use this
knowledge to obtain certain common
objectives. Don’t miss it, you will not regret
it.
Sincerely,
Fragrance and Raw Materials: Birds of a Feather
Leslie Smith, PhD
From Cosmetics & Toiletries magazine, Vol.122, N0. 7/July 2007
Scientific article...
here is more to fragrance formulation
T than meets the eye-or nose that is.
Fragrance is incorporated into nearly every
personal care product on the market and often
is instrumental in a consumer’s choice; and
with personal care formula ever –evolving, it
only follows that the fragrance industry would
evolve alongside it.
During the fragrance selection process, a
fragrance formulator must be conscientious of
many of the same issues that personal care
formulators face. Both raw material and
fragrance formulators spend significant time in
the lab testing different materials to determine
which ingredients, oils, extracts, etc. best meet
their formulation and consumer’s needs. And
although fragrance and personal care are two
different industries, the discovery process
prove similar.
Leslie Smith, PhD, has been formulating
fragrance of personal care products for a
number of years, most recently as the vice
president of the fragrance technology for Coty/
Lancaster. Although he recognizes that
fragrance formulating is similar to that of skin
care active formulating, he concedes that there
are many details that go into producing a
successful scent. Also similar are the
technologies available for formulating
fragrance and personal care products.
Trends in Delivery
Encapsulation is a trend that is growing in the
personal care industry. Just as personal care
formulators are enclosing actives to better
deliver them to certain areas of the skin, so too
are fragrance formulators attempting to
encapsulate fragrance to better deliver the scent.
“[The frangrance industry] is currently looking
at delivery in personal care. Fragrances would
be encapsulated similarly to active
ingredients,” said Smith.
Fragrance could then be designed to release on
skin through the agents that can trigger actives
such as moisture, heat and pH levels,
according to Smith. Among the encapsulated
technologies that Smith and his colleagues are
investigating is a meshlike polymer
technology.
“In efforts to make fragrance last longer, we
discovered a blend of polymers that create a
mesh screen on top of fragrances. The mesh
then regulates the release of the fragrance ,
releasing it slowly, thereby allowing the
fragrance to last longer,” said Smith.
Other pharmaceutical-derived technologies are
being noticed in the fragrance industry. For
example, nanotechnology, a noticeable trend in
the personal care industry, has b egun to
appear in fragrances.
“We have used nanotechnology to make
fragrance water-resistant. There is a new
polymer technology that allows us to enhance
the performance of fragrance in water for up to
8-10 hours. [Consumers] can jump into the sea
and the fragrance will not wash off,” added
Smith.
Natural and Organic Trends
Personal care ingredients are not the only facet
of the personal care industry affected by the
natural and organic trend. As more and more
personal care companies look to formulate
natural products, more fragrance formulators
are being asked to come up with
nonsynthetic fragrance, a challenge in the
fragrance industry.
“Natural fragrances are easier to create than
organic fragrances. [Natural fragrances] are
a little bit more expensive, but we can
make a good-smelling nature fragrance at a
cost,” said Smith. Natural fragrances, for
Smith, either occur in nature or are
synthetic but nature-identical. Organic
fragrances, however, are a completely
different challenge.
“It is getting slightly easier to create
organic fragrances, but it is still difficult,”
said Smith, who notes that there are few
materials that can be incorporated into organic
fragrances. Materials that can be formulated
into organic fragrances include menthol, thyme
and rosemary. Smith characterizes these
fragrances as “medicinal,” which is a
challenge for the fragrance industry.
In addition to the limited supply of oils that a
perfumer can use in an organic fragrance,
formulating with organic ingredients may
interfere with the fragrance’s ability to last.
The organic fragrance industry is gradually
improving, according to Smith, as new organic
oils are being created at a slow rate.
Two Similar Industries
Although the raw materials and the fragrance
industry experience similar trends, there are
still many issues that affect each separately.
One such example is research into
consumers’individualized affinity to certain
fragrances. According to Smith, many
researchers debate whether fragrance
preference is inherent or acquired.
One issue remains popular between the two
industries-global acceptance. Personal care
ingredient suppliers continue to establish their
ingredients globally and, in lieu of regulatory
challenges, this is no easy task. Similarly,
fragrance manufacturers are trying to market
their scents around the world. “We are all
trying to gain global acceptance of our
fragrances. This can prove challenging because
different areas of the world prefer different
scents,” said Smith. Although fragrance and
raw material are two different industries, they
are an interlinked and will continue to evolve
together.
After earning a doctorate in organic chemistry from
Cambridge , and serving a post-doctoral position at
the University of Geneva in Switzerland, Smith began
his career in personal care at Procter & Gamble
(P&G) in Brussels, Belgium.
After several years with P&G, he joined the fragrance
industry in a number of technical management
positions in Switzerland and the United States.
Smith is currently vice president of fragrance
technology with Coty/Lancaster at its global R&D
headquarters in Morris Plains, N.J., USA.
Smith has a number of publications in chemistry and
perfumery to his credit, as well as a list of patents
ranging from insect control to deodorancy and
delivery systems.
Plastic Surgery Societies Raise Concerns About Cosmetic
Procedures Performed by Unqualified Personnel
Non-clinical settings may expose patients to unnecessary risks
From www.plasticsurgery.org
ew York, NY and Arlington Heights, IL –
N The American Society for Aesthetic
Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and the American
Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) have joined
forces to raise awareness about the dangers of
unlicensed personnel performing medical
cosmetic procedures in non-clinical settings.
Recent cases of patients receiving BOTOX®
and tissue fillers at shopping malls, beauty
salons or in their homes by individuals without
sufficient training or licensure caused concerns
among clinical and public health experts.
Cosmetic procedures, including tissue filler
injections, laser therapies, chemical peels and
skin resurfacing, should only be done under the
care of properly credentialed and trained
medical professionals using only products
approved by the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA).
“There are some misconceptions among
patients about the true nature of non-surgical
cosmetic procedures. Non-surgical does not
mean non-medical,” said Mark Jewell, MD,
president of the Aesthetic Society. “Patients
deserve to know who is treating them, what
their qualifications are, who the supervising
physician is, and where the product is coming
from. These are questions patients should ask.”
Over the last few years, there has been
explosive growth in non-surgical cosmetic
procedures, often performed in retail or spa-like
settings. Unlike physician offices where
clinicians oversee the treatment and maintain
medical records, spa-type centers may have
limited or no full-time medical staff and may
lack the experience or training to handle more
than routine beauty services. Patients need
assurances that a qualified and trained
practitioner will perform their procedure
appropriately, under sanitary conditions, and
with product where the quality and source is
known and FDA approved.
“In many situations, physicians appropriately
provide oversight for patient care in a variety of
medical settings,” said Bruce Cunningham,
MD, president of ASPS. “Our concern here is
that physician supervision in non-surgical
cosmetic procedures may be inadequate or nonexistent
and that the individuals performing the
treatments lack adequate training to safely
perform the procedures. Our purpose in
convening a patient safety group on this issue is
to ensure that patients have the information
they need to make the right decision. While
spas and salons are convenient for cosmetic
medical treatments, this should not be at the
expense of safety and expertise.”
The Societies will continue to be vocal
advocates for patient safety as it relates to these
procedures and work collaboratively with other
medical societies, allied health professionals,
and industry to raise awareness of the dangers
of such procedures being performed by
unqualified or untrained professionals. A Joint
ASPS and ASAPS Advisory on Injectables and
Fillers: Legal and Regulatory Risk
Management Issues, released last year,
underscores the two societies’ position: “The
administration of injectables and fillers is a
medical procedure and is subject to the same
precautions of any medical procedure… It is
the physician’s responsibility to ensure that the
non-physician administering the injectables or
fillers possesses the proper education and
training.”
