Carol<strong>in</strong>e Schönn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Thor Axel Stenström<br />

is occurr<strong>in</strong>g (Moe & Izurieta, 2003). Survival analysis suggested that faecal coliforms would<br />

survive >1,000 days <strong>and</strong> Ascaris around 600 days <strong>in</strong> latr<strong>in</strong>es with a pH <strong>of</strong> less than 9.<br />

Figure 13. Collecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> faecal material should<br />

preferably be d<strong>on</strong>e <strong>in</strong> tw<strong>in</strong> pit compartments. When<br />

full, <strong>on</strong>e pit is sealed <strong>of</strong>f <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> storage time counted<br />

from that date, while <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r pit is used. In Vietnam,<br />

represent<strong>in</strong>g a hot climate a full destructi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ascaris<br />

eggs <strong>and</strong> model viruses were obta<strong>in</strong>ed with<strong>in</strong> six<br />

m<strong>on</strong>ths dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s. If tw<strong>in</strong> pits are not<br />

used, sec<strong>on</strong>dary storage or o<strong>the</strong>r types <strong>of</strong> treatment<br />

must be planned for.<br />

Storage is especially beneficial <strong>in</strong> dry hot climates result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> desiccati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> material<br />

<strong>and</strong> low moisture c<strong>on</strong>tents aid<strong>in</strong>g pathogen <strong>in</strong>activati<strong>on</strong>. If all <strong>the</strong> faecal material is dry right<br />

through, <strong>the</strong> pathogen decrease is facilitated. Esrey et al. (1998) suggested that <strong>the</strong>re is rapid<br />

pathogen destructi<strong>on</strong> at moisture levels below 25%, <strong>and</strong> that this level should be aimed for <strong>in</strong><br />

ecological sanitati<strong>on</strong> toilets that are based <strong>on</strong> dehydrati<strong>on</strong> (i.e. storage). Low moisture c<strong>on</strong>tent<br />

is also beneficial <strong>in</strong> order to reduce smell <strong>and</strong> fly breed<strong>in</strong>g (Esrey et al., 1998; Carl<strong>and</strong>er<br />

& Westrell, 1999). Regrowth <strong>of</strong> bacterial pathogens may however occur after applicati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

moisture (water) or if <strong>the</strong> material is mixed with a moist soil as <strong>in</strong>dicated by results reported<br />

by Aust<strong>in</strong> (2001). Desiccati<strong>on</strong> is not a compost<strong>in</strong>g process <strong>and</strong> when moisture is added <strong>the</strong><br />

easily metabolized organic compounds will facilitate bacterial growth, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g e.g. E. coli<br />

<strong>and</strong> Salm<strong>on</strong>ella, if small amounts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se are occurr<strong>in</strong>g or <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> material.<br />

Protozoan cysts are sensitive to desiccati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>and</strong> this also affects <strong>the</strong>ir survival <strong>on</strong> plant<br />

surfaces (Snowd<strong>on</strong> et al., 1989; Yates & Gerba, 1998). Normal moisture levels do not<br />

<strong>in</strong>activate Ascaris eggs, with values below 5% needed (Feachem et al., 1983). Informati<strong>on</strong> for<br />

<strong>the</strong> corresp<strong>on</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g effective time is currently lack<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
