composted, s<strong>in</strong>ce that would result <strong>in</strong> higher losses <strong>of</strong> nitrogen. Inc<strong>in</strong>erati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> material<br />

after alkal<strong>in</strong>e treatment may also be difficult due to <strong>the</strong> low energy c<strong>on</strong>tent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> material, see<br />

below. These aspects need to be fur<strong>the</strong>r evaluated.<br />

After alkal<strong>in</strong>e treatment, <strong>the</strong> result<strong>in</strong>g fertilizer will have an elevated pH (>8). This is not<br />

<strong>of</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cern from a hygienic po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> view <strong>and</strong> may be beneficial for many soils but may affect<br />

crop producti<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> alkal<strong>in</strong>e soils.<br />

Additi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> ash or lime to faeces<br />

Additi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> ash or lime <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> primary treatment <strong>of</strong> faeces is recommended as it will facilitate<br />

pathogen <strong>in</strong>activati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> decrease <strong>the</strong> risk for disease transmissi<strong>on</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> reuse<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> material. It also reduces <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> odour <strong>and</strong> flies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> toilet. The additives may <strong>in</strong>fluence<br />

<strong>the</strong> choice <strong>of</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary treatment opti<strong>on</strong>s. Fur<strong>the</strong>r evaluati<strong>on</strong> is needed to establish <strong>the</strong> amounts<br />

<strong>and</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> additives that are needed for sufficient pathogen reducti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>on</strong><br />

sec<strong>on</strong>dary treatment.<br />

Additi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> urea<br />

Urea is a pH-elevat<strong>in</strong>g additive that has been c<strong>on</strong>sidered for large-scale treatment <strong>of</strong> faeces <strong>on</strong><br />

a municipal level. Urea also adds value to <strong>the</strong> fertilizer value <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>activates pathogens by a<br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ed elevated pH <strong>and</strong> high amm<strong>on</strong>ia c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The additi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> 3% urea-nitrogen to faeces results <strong>in</strong> a pH <strong>of</strong> ~9.3, that at 20°C corresp<strong>on</strong>ds<br />

to 8,000 mg/l <strong>of</strong> free amm<strong>on</strong>ia. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s no E. coli or Salm<strong>on</strong>ella were detected<br />

after five days, enterococci were reduced 2 log 10<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> viability <strong>of</strong> Ascaris eggs was 90%<br />

(V<strong>in</strong>nerås et al., 2003a). After 50 days, no viable pathogens or <strong>in</strong>dicators were recorded,<br />

except for spore-form<strong>in</strong>g clostridia. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> amm<strong>on</strong>ia will rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> material if it is<br />

properly stored, <strong>the</strong> risk for regrowth <strong>of</strong> pathogenic bacteria <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> treated matter should be<br />

m<strong>in</strong>imized.<br />

Amm<strong>on</strong>ia generated at high pHs may act as an <strong>in</strong>activat<strong>in</strong>g agent for viruses (Pesaro et<br />

al., 1995), <strong>and</strong> has also been dem<strong>on</strong>strated to affect Cryptosporidium oocysts (Jenk<strong>in</strong>s et al.,<br />

1998). The viability <strong>of</strong> Ascaris eggs was reduced <strong>in</strong> amm<strong>on</strong>ia-treated sewage sludge (Ghigletti<br />

et al., 1997).<br />

Chemical treatment <strong>of</strong> faeces<br />

Chemicals could be added to faeces <strong>in</strong> order to elim<strong>in</strong>ate pathogens. These types <strong>of</strong> treatment<br />

are ma<strong>in</strong>ly c<strong>on</strong>sidered an opti<strong>on</strong> for sec<strong>on</strong>dary large-scale systems, <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>ed pers<strong>on</strong>nel should<br />

preferably h<strong>and</strong>le <strong>the</strong> chemicals.<br />

Inc<strong>in</strong>erati<strong>on</strong><br />

Inc<strong>in</strong>erati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> faeces will m<strong>in</strong>imize <strong>the</strong> risk for transmissi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> disease related to <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ash s<strong>in</strong>ce essentially all pathogens will be removed. Systems utiliz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>erati<strong>on</strong><br />

have not been <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>on</strong> a planned level so far. The primary h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g will still <strong>in</strong>volve<br />

hygienic risks but systems with <strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>erati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> direct c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> toilet may be developed<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future. As an alternative, high temperature levels will have <strong>the</strong> same beneficial effect<br />
