A WARM WELCOME TO WOMAD
2013 FROM TSB BANK.
We’ve been supporting
WOMAD for a number
of years, and we’re
delighted to be involved
again this year.
WOMAD is an exhilarating
world-class celebration
of music, dance,
food and film - and
it’s become one
of the highlights
of New Zealand’s
cultural calendar.
Plus, it’s set in the
stunning backdrop of the
world-renowned TSB Bowl
of Brooklands. While
you’re there, be sure
to take some time to
explore the spectacular
beauty of Pukekura Park
- it’s right next door!
TSB Bank has been
serving New Zealanders
since 1850 and 163
years later we’re
still 100% locally
to support important
community and national
events. Like WOMAD.
So whether this is your
first WOMAD experience
or your ninth, I
hope you enjoy it
as much as we enjoy
For Shell, it is
WOMAD New Zealand is
unique in the world.
The city, the ambiance
of Brooklands Park’s
environment and the
majestic Mt Taranaki
are part of the magic
of this festival - and
in turn, WOMAD enhances
our region’s cultural
fabric and is one of the
reasons why Taranaki is
truly ‘like no other’.
While you are here
we encourage you to
the off-road pathways
just a small part!
However you spend your
time here, we hope you
thoroughly enjoy it
and leave inspired to
return again to both
Artists
Abigail Washburn
& Kai Welch (USA)
Steeped in Chinese culture, an expert
at clawhammer banjo, respectful of
old-time Americana, but driven to
make modern music - Abigail Washburn
is a fascinating conundrum. The
Nashville-based singer/songwriter
marries folk with far-flung sounds
and indie rock, creating songs that
feel both strangely familiar and
unlike anything you’ve ever heard.
voice of LA Mitchell, keys, and a
Amparo Sánchez (Spain)
After 11 years with her influential band Amparanoia, vivacious and powerful
singer Amparo Sánchez has embarked on a striking solo project - a new
album. Expanding on her exuberant roots-reggae-Cuban style, she called the
album Tucson-Habana - highly appropriate, considering the dry Americana
This sensational Brooklyn-based
12-piece has mastered the insistent,
distinctive rhythms that propel
Afrobeat. Conceived in 1998 by
baritone saxophonist Martín Perna as
a cross between the New York Latin
funk grooves of Eddie Palmieri,
Harvey Averne and Mandrill with
the Afrobeat jams of the late Fela
Kuti, Antibalas gradually shifted
towards Fela’s seminal Africa 70
band. It qualified Antibalas as
One of the true masters of the ngoni, a stringed
instrument found throughout West Africa, Bassekou
Kouyaté has performed with artists such as Taj Mahal
and the late Ali Farka Touré and is now making his own
distinct musical waves with his band Ngoni Ba. Taught
to play ngoni by his father, Bassekou won fame as a
backing musician for star female griot singers in the
mid-1980s. He soon crossed paths with extraordinary
kora player Toumani Diabate and eventually joined his
landmark Symmetric Orchestra. Accommodating elements of
western harmony and jazz, Bassekou added three additional
(NZ/Aotearoa)
The very first WOMAD band competition
well over 200 gigs since launching
in New Zealand in 2009. The band
has shot into the limelight on
perform an eclectic and diverse mix
of tunes and songs both original
and sourced from around the globe,
contextualises the performance
with regional costumes and dances
David Kilgour and the Heavy
David is a guitar god for guitar atheists. Anybody
who’s seen the man play live knows full well that the
instrument is an extension of his body, something
he was born to have in his hands. From his earliest
days as a founding member of the legendary Clean,
singer/songwriter David Kilgour has stood out on the
New Zealand music landscape. A cult hero to many,
his signature guitar twang and languid, carefree
melodies are well-loved. David will be joined by
his backing band the Heavy Eights - Taane Tokona
on drums, Tony de Raad on guitar and keyboards, and
Thomas Bell on bass and keyboards. And Sam Hunt will
be dropping in for a special guest appearance.
Dj ClicK sets sail on an
infectiously infused with the
fire of electro-dance artistry.
The Correspondents revamp vintage sounds for
electro, drum ’n’ bass, swing and boogie
‘40s relics with squelchy synths and
dusty drum loops. And Mr Bruce’s
joyous dancing offsets searing
errors of love, lust and loss.
As a founder of London’s legendary
DJ Hugo Mendez sits at the
African, Caribbean and Latin
explosion. Think heavy Afro
grooves, mambo, tropical disco,
samba, calypso, funk and cumbia.
Sat, 9.15pm, chimney Stage, 1 of 1
A giant of the trumpet and his
homeland’s most famous musician in
a generation, Hugh galvanized antiapartheid
support both domestically
and on an international level. He
brought the struggle of black South
Africa into the living rooms of the
wider world, one man and his trumpet
playing tunes of defiance and hope.
And while Hugh has seen better times
dawn in South Africa, this is a man
not at home to complacency. He might
have been in the vanguard for half a
century, but the anger still simmers,
the embers are still hot. “I don’t
think I have the power to forgive.”
This fresh sound is what Seychelles
Moutya and Tinge rhythms specific
Jimmy Cliff (Jamaica)
It’s a measure of the universal appeal of Jimmy
Cliff’s music that his great hit You Can Get It If
You Really Want has been used as campaign music
by both the Conservative Party in the UK and
Nicaragua’s Sandinista National Liberation Front.
But contradiction is what Jimmy has thrived on
throughout 50 years in reggae; this is the man who
calmly squares the circle of playing the streetwise
gangster in the classic film The Harder They Come and
recording his own version of Hakuna Matata from The
Lion King. Now in his sixties, that golden tenor
voice has lost none of its power, as heard on his
EP Sacred Fire, produced by Tim Armstrong, frontman
of punk veterans Rancid. Jimmy’s always been keen
to pass through new doors and a determination to
contribute to a brighter tomorrow still fires him.
sheLL nZ Zero WAste
WOMAD is committed to ensuring the
event is not only a spectacular
celebration of international culture,
sound and sight, but also becomes an
example of environmental, sustainable
success! Everyone involved with the
festival (from the artists performing
to the public attending) is being
encouraged to share in and embrace
the festival’s zero waste goal.
The aim is to minimise the amount of
waste heading to landfills. You’ll
notice a multifaceted approach
is used, integrating the four R’s
of waste minimisation (reduce,
reuse, recycle and rethink).
IT’S EASY to be
‘GREEN’ at WOMAD!
There are three types of bins at
waste stations throughout the WOMAD
site. The bins are all colour
coded. The waste items that go
into each of the three different
bin types are listed below:
WHY‘ZERO WASTE’?
Less rubbish means saved resources,
and longer lasting and fewer
landfills. Fewer landfills mean more
space, and better air and water
quality. Zero waste is all about
caring for our environment now,
so that future generations can
also enjoy our beautiful world.
HOW YOU CAN HELP!
In order to achieve our waste
minimisation target, all food and
drink products sold throughout the
event will be served in recyclable,
reusable, biodegradable or compostable
containers. Please use the bins
correctly to ensure all materials
are recycled or composted.
Turning ideas into energy
Whakanui ō mua, whakanui ā mua. Honouring our past, celebrating our future.
Shell has invested in energy for New Zealanders for over
100 years. Innovation drives our search for sustainable
solutions for future generations.
It’s the power of human energy that counts.
Shell New Zealand
BIODEGRADABLES
Food waste, food
containers and utensils,
non-plastic hot cups
and coffee cups.
These are all made from
biodegradable cardboard or
cardboard-like materials,
corn or potato starch.
Why not give our
helpers at the
recycling stations
a smile - they
are volunteers who
are committed to
implementing WOMAD’s
zero waste goal which
is proudly supported
by Shell NZ.
Supported by
RECYCLING
Plastic bottles, plastic
drinking glasses,
hot cup lids.
Aluminium and tin cans.
All cardboard and
paper must be clean
i.e. no traces of
food on or inside.
RUBBISH
Although there will
be general rubbish
bins on-site, please
take home with you any
non-recyclable materials
which you bring in
to the festival.
DON’T JUDGE A BOOK
BY ITS COVER
The Human Library contains Human
Books (people on loan), who are
taken out by a Reader (person
borrowing the Book) for 30 minutes
to explore the Book’s topic.
The Human Library enables Human Books
with a story to tell and their Readers
to break stereotypes by challenging
prejudices in a positive and often
humorous manner. The library is
designed to promote dialogue, reduce
prejudices, encourage understanding
and widen both people’s view on life,
in a space set up for interaction
through one-on-one conversation.
The Human Library breaks down barriers
so that communities can build
tolerance and understanding of one
another, even if they don’t agree with
each other’s chosen way of life.
Flags - Angus Watt
The beautiful and ever-changing
sea of flags by UK artist Angus
Watt has become an iconic visual
element of WOMAD sites around the
globe. It all started when Angus
first worked with WOMAD in 1994,
and now hundreds of flags are
installed at each WOMAD event.
Strung Out -
Carmen Rogers
Strung Out hovers somewhere between
spatial drawing and sculptural
installation. The work attempts to
divide, delineate and frame space, and
reconfigure and translate the geometry
of outdoor landscape. Taranaki artist
Carmen Rogers is an award-winning
Metamorphosis I &
II - Interactive
Light Totems, 2013
Ashley Turner returns to WOMAD
2013, continuing to develop his
interest in light sculpture.
This time he is collaborating
with motion graphics artist Mulk,
product developer Doug Makinson
and commissioned work by visual
artists Fane Flaws. Metamorphosis I
& II are transformative totems by
nature as they change from day to
night. These totems are designed to
have a changing skin of new art for
future festivals. Turner has been
making art that explores the use of
light for more than a decade; his
light totems reference the ‘Pou’
and the sign-post, mixing of urban
functionality with cultural affinities.
Erica Duthie & Struan Ashby form
a visual art team who transform
urban spaces with temporary drawings
created from tape. Tape Art is an
original and playful art medium
that relies on the simple idea that
tape can be manipulated to form
expressive drawing lines. Their
works have explored many themes, but
are always figurative, often telling
stories with open metaphors. The
Tape Art mural at WOMAD will unroll
as spontaneously as the people that
inspire it. Don’t be surprised if
that outline looks just like you!
Ecology to
Cosmology -
Miranda Brown
The Ecology and Cosmology set of flags
by New Zealand artist and fashion
designer Miranda Brown was originally
commissioned by the Wynyard Quarter
on the Auckland waterfront. Miranda
Brown’s vision is to create textiles
and products of great beauty that
reflect the utter brilliance and
magic of nature. Inspired by the
terrain and texture of our land and
people, this flag design represents
the elements at large, our multiculture
and vibrant spirit. The
circle motif illustrates the sea
rising to the land, mountains giving
way to air and the wind currents
carrying our stories far and wide.
The circular reference talks about
navigation to New Zealand from
the past to present and future.
A timeless sense of place and
honouring of all life. The colours
chosen interweave between all flags
connecting to one another in unison.
From New Zealand to Abu Dhabi, onto
Australia and back to London. During
the last 31 years the WOMAD mothership
has travelled the seven seas
and introduced the WOMAD vibe to more
than 27 countries. We are the biggest
festival producer on the planet
with more than 160 international
festivals tucked under our belt.
But we’re not done yet! There are
still places undiscovered and ever
more people to meet, giving them
the opportunity to discover the
incredible music, arts and dance
that enrich our wide world.
2013 will take WOMAD to Australia,
New Zealand, Spain, Italy, UK
and our new adventures - Russia
and Buckingham Palace (shhhh - top
secret!). We can hardly wait!
2012 found us not only celebrating
advancing maturity at 30 years in
the UK and coming of age at 21 in
Cáceres, Spain but also 20 years for
WOMADelaide too. Now we are in our
ninth year for WOMAD New Zealand.
The WOMAD kids are growing up!
We, the WOMAD International team,
would like to wish our New
Zealand Partners the very best
ninth festival and all the New
Zealand festival goers an incredible
year of gorgeous arts, musical
discoveries and crazy dancing. You
are in for some serious treats.
