We are delighted to 

bring you a diverse and 

colourful array of artists 

from New Zealand and 

around the world. We have international artists 

from Canada, Italy, Germany, UK, Ireland, Australia, 

and France, alongside internationally acclaimed 

New Zealand artists at the top of their game. 

Taranaki has developed an enviable reputation 

for punching above its weight and having a 

vibrant and sophisticated community that 

support the arts. This programme is designed 

to entertain, challenge and inspire you. 

Experience urban acrobatics and circus from 

Montreal, mind-bending visual theatre, orchestral 

manoeuvres and brilliant classical music, hilarious 

comedy, outrageous cabaret and musical antics, 

and our own unique New Zealand stories, told 

through visual arts, literature, theatre and dance. 

The festival will fill our superb venues at the 

TSB Showplace, and expand into many other 

venues around New Plymouth and around the 

region, in halls, clubs, pubs and galleries. We 

have adapted spaces to host Words in the 

Libri Lounge, and the Mayfair Festival Club. 

Working with our own community, the festival 

is proud to collaborate with our colleagues at 

the Govett-Brewster and Puke Ariki, and to 

create new projects with Ars Nova and the New 

Plymouth Orchestra, and iconic events such as 

the TSB Community Trust Lantern Parade.

Traces 

Canada 

Traces is poetic and explosive, mixing acrobatic 

forms with street elements such as skateboarding 

and basketball, theatre and contemporary 

dance, ensuring a fix of pure urban adrenaline 

that is electric and immensely entertaining. 

The Traces story is told through music, song, 

dance, speech, illustration, and high-risk 

acrobatics. The characters use every mode 

of expression available to them, hoping to 

leave their traces as best they can. 

As the stories are told of their past and their 

strengths and weaknesses, the familiarity between 

the seven performers and the audience grows. 

At its heart, Traces celebrates their particular 

bond and talents; their risk-taking; the ultimate 

affirmation of life; and their unbridled energy, proof 

of a collective pounding pulse. With eye-popping 

athleticism, fluid grace and chiselled physiques, 

Traces delights and surprises at every turn.

Inspired as a child by Disney cartoons while 

growing up amidst the Venetian Carnivale, Ennio 

Marchetto amused his friends and family with 

visions of Marilyn Monroe dressed in white paper. 

Growing from strength to strength, his dream 

became a reality with the creation of his first 

cabaret show that went on to win the Golden 

Lion and Golden Mosquito Comedy Awards 

at the Venetian Entertainment Festival.

Vaka explores the idea of a raft as a metaphor 

for hope. Inspired in part by The Raft, video 

installation by Bill Viola, and a response to The 

Arrival of the Maoris in New Zealand painting by 

Louis J. Steele and Charles F. Goldie in 1898, which 

was influenced by Theodore Gericault’s famous 

The Raft of the Medusa, depicting the terror of 

shipwreck, Vaka isn’t about being pretty; it is 

about leaving your mark and doing it with force. 

Founding Artistic Director, Neil Ieremia, believes 

every vaka (canoe) journey faces dangers. “We 

are constantly asked to evolve and adapt in order 

to survive. The question that struck me was 

why does it take a disaster, or life-threatening 

events for humans to demonstrate humanity?” 

Vaka received standing ovations throughout 

Germany and North America. With athletic 

and powerful dancers, Black Grace confirm 

again why they are New Zealand’s leading 

contemporary dance company.

Festival Fringe 2011, has astounded and 

entertained audiences from Tehran to New York. 

Beguiling and ingenious, this show tells the 

story of a humble man with a huge imagination 

and the gravity-defying powers of the greatest 

superheroes. The action takes place in a striking 

set that integrates continuous live video projections 

creating a funny, intriguing, moving, and at times 

surreal work. Leo can scale walls like Spiderman 

and dance on the ceiling like Fred Astaire. 

Over ten years in the making, Leo challenges 

the laws of nature. Breaking the rules of gravity 

as well as genre, a multi-talented dancer, actor, 

trampolinist, gymnast and clown Tobias Wegner

It’s not about the truth, it’s about the ratings. 

Set in the world of NZ television news, Live 

at Six is a comedy with a thriller edge. News 

anchor, Jane Kenyon’s, (Jess Robinson) life 

and career is rocked when footage of her 

(apparently) misbehaving at a party goes viral. 

Ethics go out the window as the race between the 

networks to package the footage and story will make 

you question what you see on TV. Which version will 

the public believe and what channel will they tune to?

to the pre-play set up, and a real deadline 

is incorporated into the entertainment.

written great roles with brilliant one-liners for

1955. In the well-kempt Takapuna garden lovingly 

tended by the literary father of the nation, Frank 

Sargeson, the vegetables are nearly ready and his 

old mate Harry is due for another stay any day soon. 

But behind Frank’s famous macrocarpa hedge 

a mysterious world is being shaped by an 

enigmatic new voice – Janet Frame has come 

to stay. Frank’s world is about to change. 

Janet Frame boarded with Frank Sargeson from 

1955 to 1956 in a short but significant stay 

during which she wrote her first novel, Owls Do 

Cry. She lived and worked in a now-demolished 

small army hut behind the house. After returning 

from Europe in 1963, she was a regular visitor 

to the small fibrolite bach where she visited and 

stayed with her old friend and erstwhile mentor. 

A funny, clever and often very moving literary 

love triangle based on the book Gifted by

The ever industrious ponydance, champions of 

comedy dance theatre, have performed for less 

than 10 people in parish halls and over 10,000 

people in the Aviva Stadium. Their show is a 55 

minute marvel that entertains relentlessly! 

Leonie is waiting for Paula, Paula is waiting for 

a man, Bryan is waiting to be included. We’re all 

waiting for something, mostly for something 

to happen. So, if you have a love for good 

dancing, good looks and a good time, you’ve 

come to the right place because these guys 

know how to fill the time better than most. 

Winners of the Adelaide Fringe 2012, Best Dance 

Show, ponydance are based in Ireland and 

Northern Ireland and tour the world drinking tea

Verdi’s Requiem 

Ars Nova & New Plymouth Orchestra, with Soloists 


Guiseppe Verdi’s Messa da Requiem was 

first performed in Milan in 1874 in honour of 

Gioachino Rossini, whom Verdi had greatly 

admired throughout his adult life. 

The Requiem is a highly celebrated work for four 

soloists, double choir and large orchestra. The 

choir of over 100 singers will be led by New 

Plymouth’s Ars Nova Choir with Schola Sacra 

of Wanganui and the New Plymouth Orchestra, 

augmented to over 70 players. The conductor is 

Christopher Luke, who arrived in New Plymouth in 

2012 from positions in Melbourne and Hobart. 

The featured soloists include Grammy Awardwinning 

bass baritone, Jonathan Lemalu, local 

soprano and finalist in the 2012 Lexus Song 

Quest, Bryony Williams, mezzo and winner 

of several top prizes in the UK this year, Anna 

Pierard and renowned tenor, Derek Hill, both in 

high demand for operatic roles and recitals. 

This remarkable masterwork celebrates 

the bi-centenary of Verdi, and is a fitting 

finale for the arts festival prior to the 

temporary closing of the TSB Showplace.

The first four notes of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony 

comprise one of the most famous moments in 

the history of music. An evening of exhilarating

Opening this concert is the overture to The Ruins 

of Athens. Composed as a celebration of the 

modern city of Pest, this resplendent overture 

starts this unique celebration of Beethoven 

before the NZSO performs one of his early 

triumphs, the sunny Second Symphony. 

The Symphony No. 2 in D major was composed 

in Beethoven’s twenties, when he battled with 

hearing problems, it is one of his early triumphs - a 

sunny work which hints at future glories.

Beethoven reCYCLE 2013 - Appassionata 

Beethoven’s cycle of 32 sonatas is the most 

remarkable series for piano ever composed. 

Written the whole length of his creative life, 

from the early Op 2 dedicated to Haydn to the 

mighty Op 111 which takes the piano into the 

realms of pure imagination, this is the “New 

Testament of the piano repertoire”. Their famous 

names – Moonlight, Tempest, Appassionata, 

Waldstein – have entered the pantheon of cultural 

history. This is programme four of the seven 

parts touring NZ as Beethoven reCYCLE in 2013. 

“It’s a remarkable thing for me to play these 

sonatas again. The thing about Beethoven is 

that he synthesised human psychological truths, 

with all their subtlety and all their range, into

Fresh off the back of SXSW and a headline tour of 

the USA, Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackettes, 

roll into New Plymouth with a rousing and 

rambunctious concoction of soul, surf and rhythm

band, following the prodigious success of their 

debut album, Baby Caught the Bus reaching number

North American tour from Arizona to Alabama.

Celebrating the musical history of Rodger Fox, his 

legendary big band celebrates its 40th anniversary

Cabaret star Spanky returns home from London for a 

performance of his/her hit show Candice McQueen: 

Nasty! accompanied by Cam Nicol on guitar. 

Spanky – originally from Wanganui – held a 

seven-year residency at London’s infamous 

Bistrotheque, has performed for three British 

Prime Ministers and had private bookings at the 

request of Elton John and Alexander McQueen. 

Earlier this year he/she toured Australia 

to rapturous applause, winning major arts 

awards in Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide. 

Spanky’s alter-ego, the immortal demi-goddess 

Candice McQueen, is a Mr Sister who has partied 

her way around the world for thousands of 

years. The show is a comedy-cabaret about 

Candice falling in love with a fallen 90s screen 

idol and the journey to save both their lives.

Another successful band out of the stable of LOOP 

Recordings Aot(Ear)oa, and a massive crowd

Aaron Tokona has been around music for years. His 

first band, Weta, supported the likes of Foo Fighters, 

Soundgarden and Everclear. He describes his two 

current bands, Cairo Knife Fight and AHoriBuzz 

as, “A mongrel of a sound where anything goes... 

Cairo Knife Fight music is a balls-to-the-floor 

headrush. AHoriBuzz music is a cross between 

techno, funk, house, blues, rock and reggae.” 

Often a slow-burning start will gradually 

build to a wild intensity – riff-fired, 

unhinged and hallucinatory. This

Part jazz virtuoso, part troubadour, part soul 

shaman, Vance Fontaine has carved his place 

in New Zealand musical history as the premiere 

male chanteuse. Since the early 1980s, Fontaine 

has unleashed his own brand of musical majesty 

upon the people of planet earth. Alongside his 

band, The Peculiar Sensations, Fontaine has toured 

the globe tirelessly for more than 25 years. 

Greg Ellis is Vance Fontaine. A professional 

improviser since 1990, Ellis has worked 

extensively in theatrical performance and corporate 

entertainment. He has won numerous Theatresports 

titles both nationally and internationally, and is the 

Artistic Director of Wellington-based The Improvisers. 

In Command Performance, Tane Upjohn-Beatson 

is musical director and guitarist with Thomas 

McGrath on drums and Matiu Whiting on bass. 

Musical fads have come and gone and Vance 

Fontaine has sucked the marrow of melody 

from each of them and then cast them 

aside. He is as eternal as music itself. 

A highlight for comedy lovers, Wilson F. Dixon, 

is here to serenade you in his low-key laconic, 

Southern style. A country music legend, 

Wilson Dixon’s melodic philosophies on life 

have seen him become a loved character 

on the Australian, UK and NZ circuit. 

This guitar strumming cowboy of Cripple Creek, 

Colorado, considers his home a beautiful 

part of the world if you like rusted out cars, 

mountains and waiting for nothing to happen. 

The F in his name didn’t actually stand for 

anything, so he dropped it when he was twelve. 

Wilson Dixon excels at dry humour and in his song 

Life he compares many things and experiences 

to just how life is. “Life’s like Sudoku... frustrating 

and ultimately pointless,” “Life’s like a big man in 

a mini skirt... unusual, but who am I to judge?” 

“I like NZ, it’s like a second home. I even 

went to school with a guy called Stewart 

Ireland...he was very remote.”

The Kings of Russian criminal sound return 

for another go at Taranaki, following hot on 

the heels of their hugely successful New 

Zealand debut at WOMAD in March. 

Brewed within Melbourne’s underground 

ethnic music scene, VulgarGrad embraces 

the old songs of Russian thieves with punk 

classics of the Perestroika era, shot with 

a strong dose of St Petersburg ska. 

This grievous musical harm is delivered via 

the incredible vocal talents of frontman, Jacek 

Koman, one of Australia’s most formidable stage 

and screen actors, and his wily and cunning 

six-piece of brilliantly ingenious musicians. 

VulgarGrad’s first album, King of Crooks, brazenly 

taunts us with songs such as, Odessa Jailbreak, 

Cigarette, A Piss Up Begins with a Bottle, and Junkie, 

Alcoholic and Drunkard. It’s easy to catch their 

drift, but impossible to escape the excitement of a 

vodka-fuelled oompah-swing-ska-punk onslaught 

delivered with raucous menace and grim smiles. 

Set in the future, One Bucket, Two Comedians, 

begins with two washed up comedians, full of 

regrets about not achieving their own goals 

from their bucket list. So, they embark on a 

crazy interactive journey back in time to now! 

To this show! On this stage! In a home-made 

time machine! They set about fulfilling 

their own ridiculous bucket list and helping 

members of the audience achieve theirs. 

But, who are these unlikely heroes? 

Alan McElroy was born and bred in Dublin, Ireland, 

arriving in New Zealand in 2010. Later that year he 

was voted the Best Newcomer at the NZCG Awards, 

and has worked on the pro circuit ever since. 

Vaughan King has performed comedy for over a 

decade and has two Billy T Award nominations. 

His friendly, astute, acerbic observations and 

quietly disturbing, self-deprecating style of 

comedy is a hit with people of all ages.

Auckland-based singer songwriter, Nadia Reid, 

describes her music style as, “new folk”. Armed 

with an acoustic guitar and a bevy of her own 

songs, with a voice as big as Texas, the 21 year old 

musician has been forging a low-flying pathway in 

music and live performance alongside her unique 

brand of understated charm for a number of years. 

Her music has been defined as formed and crafted 

with a weight that belies her young age. She 

defines the song as the easy part. “To make them 

live you have to give them out, send or carry them 

into the world. That’s the hard work, and that’s 

where you find a writer’s gift, their true worth.” 

Nadia has appeared alongside renowned 

national and international artists, but retains 

her integrity as an emerging soloist with a 

distinct voice. Her debut EP, Letters I Wrote 

and Never Sent, was released in 2011. 

Having played together for over a decade, the 

inherent understanding between the NZTrio 

musicians produces a sublime performance 

at every turn. Café is delectable lunchtime 

fare of fast, slow, light-hearted and joyful 

pieces of irresistible entertainment. 

From Debussy ’s dreamy, gentle trio to the 

startling, yet tender and beautiful Gareth 

Farr 1988 piece, Ahi (Fire), to the whoopee 

ragtime and wonderful sense of humour in Paul

New Zealand Album Release Tour with a final 

solo show in New Plymouth. His debut album,

in collaboration with his five-piece band. 

From delicate, heartfelt textures and tones to 

wide open foot-stomping atmospheric joy, Sonic 

Delusion delivers a superb experience. The use of 

a loop pedal to record snapshots of sound, artfully

Characters, maps and artefacts of early Twentieth 

Century polar exploration are brought to life 

when Auckland alt-folk band, Bond Street Bridge, 

team up with visual artist, Emily Cater, to deliver 

a multimedia experience of classic tales from 

the heroic age of antarctica exploration. 

Captured in song, Bond Street Bridge uses acoustic 

guitars, fiddles, double basses and percussion, 

to tell some tragic stories. The struggles and 

tribulations of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial 

Trans-Antarctic Expedition, to Captain Robert 

Falcon Scott’s ill-fated Terra Nova venture to 

discover they were preceded to the South 

Pole by Amundsen’s Norwegian expedition.

Street Bridge celebrates the courage and spirit

The TSB Community Trust Lantern Parade is a 

popular highlight of the Taranaki International Arts 

Festival. This year‘s theme is Colour The Streets. 

In the months leading up to the parade people all 

over Taranaki will participate in free workshops 

to invent, create and make incredible colourful 

lanterns. The grand finale of all this creative 

activity – the parade – will see around 1,000 

people take to the streets with the beautiful and 

extraordinary lanterns they have made, bringing 

colour and light into the heart of New Plymouth. 

Everything about this iconic event is free and fun! 

So roll up your sleeves and get along to a workshop 

to make a lantern – invite your friends, family, 

neighbours and colleagues! And then join your 

community for a delightful parade to celebrate the 

start of the 2013 Taranaki International Arts Festival.

Another successful band out of the stable of LOOP 

Recordings Aot(Ear)oa, and a massive crowd 

pleaser at this year’s WOMAD, AHoriBuzz, returns 

to New Plymouth to wow crowds again with their 

unique blend of psychedelic funk and rock. 

Aaron Tokona has been around music for 

years. His first band, Weta, supported the likes 

of Foo Fighters, Soundgarden and Everclear. 

He describes his two current bands, Cairo 

Knife Fight and AHoriBuzz as, “A mongrel of 

a sound where anything goes...Cairo Knife 

Fight music is a balls-to-the-floor headrush. 

AHoriBuzz music is a cross between techno, 

funk, house, blues, rock and reggae.” 

Often a slow-burning start will gradually 

build to a wild intensity – riff-fired, 

unhinged and hallucinatory. This

Rosemary McLeod is best known as a distinguished

A keen needlewoman and textile collector, her 

previous book, Thrift to Fantasy: Home Textile

category of the Montana Book Awards in 2006.

embroidery in Wellington and Auckland.

Graeme Lay 


Historians have long- pondered the personal 

nature of the famous navigator, Captain 

James Cook, but for two and half centuries 

he has remained something of an enigma. 

Novelist Graeme Lay re-imagines the peerless 

navigator’s early life in his fictionalised account, 

The Secret Life of James Cook, drawing on 

his personal knowledge of the South Pacific 

and Australasia to provide a fascinating 

re-assessment of Cook’s relationship with 

his colleagues and his wife, Elizabeth.

France 

Laurent Binet is one of France’s most praised new 

young novelists. His first novel, HHhH, was hailed 

a masterpiece by American novelist, Bret Easton 

Ellis, and won the 2010 Prix Goncourt du Premiere 

Roman (The Goncourt Prize – First Novel). 

HHhH is an acronym of Himmlers Hirn heisst 

Heydrich (Himmler’s brain is called Heydrich), 

a quip about Heydrich said to have circulated 

in Nazi Germany. The novel recounts the 

assassination of Nazi leader Reinhard Heydrich 

in 1942, tracing the history of the operation 

and the life of its protagonists – Heydrich and 

his assassins Jozef Gabc̬ik and Jan Kubiš. 

In 2012, Binet published a literary political 

portrait, Rien Ne Se Passé Comme Prévu 

(Nothing Happens as Predicted), a behindthe-scenes 

account of the successful 

presidential campaign of François Hollande. 

The son of an historian, Binet, a Parisian, 

has a degree in Literature and teaches 

French at the University of Saint-Denis.

Punga in the guise of a Whai 3, Rex Homan Kurungaituku, Donna Campbell 

Twenty six of our leading contemporary Māori 

artists, all who whakapapa back to iwi in this 

region, are answering the Call of Taranaki. 

For some, Taranaki has always been home, many 

are merely returning after a brief time away, for 

others the absence spans generations. Conflict, 

dislocation or economics and opportunity have 

been contributing factors to the scattering of these 

people. And yet regardless of the reasons that many 

may now call another place home, the people, the 

region and the mountain still resonate in their lives. 

Through sculpture, weaving, mixed media, 

photography, clay and painting, the artists 

celebrate their connections to Taranaki 

and the magnetic pull of Te Maunga. 

Curated by Darcy Nicholas this exhibition 

is a collaboration between Puke Ariki, 

Taranaki Arts Festival Trust and Toi Māori 

Aotearoa: Māori Arts New Zealand. 

During the festival, the associated programme 

of events will feature artists working on 

site, workshops, a fashion show, and 

talk tables offering the opportunity for

Tiffany Singh: What is the 

colour of the breeze? 

Kina GALLERY 

The Kina Gallery is proud to host six leading 

contemporary Māori artists during the Taranaki 

International Arts Festival. All six artists are 

connected to Taranaki iwi and are part of the Call 

of Taranaki exhibition at Puke Ariki. The exhibitors 

include glass artist Te Rongo Kirkwood, painter 

and print maker Gabrielle Belz, sculptor Barry 

Te Whatu, clay artist Maria Brockhill, sculptor, 

jeweller, and ta moko expert Rangi Kipa, and 

painter and sculptor Darcy Nicholas. Rangi Kipa 

and Darcy Nicholas have exhibited extensively 

on the international arts scene and this is a 

rare opportunity to see and purchase their 

work locally. Bell Block artist Maria Brockhill is 

currently featuring in Wellington at a national 

exhibition of leading clay artists. The Spirit 

Wrestler Gallery in Vancouver represents Barry Te 

Whatu, Gabrielle Belz and Te Rongo Kirkwood.

Tiffany Singh, of Indian, Māori, Pacific Island and 

Pakeha heritage, creates a community-connected 

project using wind chimes to focus on the 

potency, energy and meanings of colour. 

Ancient cultural beliefs inform Auckland-based 

artist Tiffany Singh’s art practice, which explores 

the continuum between science, the natural 

environment, personal wellbeing and global 

consciousness. In schools from June to August, 

the Govett-Brewster’s education team will work 

with Taranaki children to discover their own 

colour symbolism and wish for the community. 

Each bamboo wind chime will be adorned with a 

colour of the rainbow. 1,001 bamboo wind chimes 

will then transform an open air city-scape into a 

sensory experience. People will be surrounded by 

the colour and sound of the chimes hanging from 

a spectrum of ribbons, to create a vibrant natural 

instrument for the duration of the Festival.

Programme aims to entertain as well as educate...

The Schools to Festival programme provides the 

opportunity for school groups to see specially 

selected shows in theatres. The Festival to Schools 

programme takes performances and workshops 

directly into schools throughout Taranaki. 

Throughout June and July school students 

will also have the opportunity to participate in 

workshops to make lanterns for the TSB Community 

Trust Colour the Streets Lantern Parade. This 

popular parade is an illuminating highlight of 

the festival and features over 1,000 lanterns 

proudly made and paraded by the community.
