Davey Hughes

If you have wanted to know how to skin a mountain
lion, then Davey Hughes is just the man to teach
you. In his new book, Untamed: the Extraordinary
Adventures of the Swazi Man, he more than
matches Bear Grylls with a rollicking read seasoned
with lashings of hunting tips, camp-cooking
recipes, scary escapades and big beasts.
Owner of the highly-successful Swazi Outdoor
Clothing label, Davey Hughes has confounded
caribou in the Arctic Circle, gambolled with
grizzlies in Alaska, and besieged bucking buffalo
in Tanzania. He’s the bane of Customs officials’
lives and is as unconventional as it gets. He’s
a fervent conservationist, a gruelling Coast
to Coast runner, and an inspirational speaker
who knows how to spin a yarn or two.

Rosemary McLeod
Aotearoa/New Zealand
A five-time Qantas Feature Writer of the Year and
Jubilee Prize winner for Investigative Journalism,
Rosemary McLeod is best known as a distinguished
New Zealand journalist, columnist, cartoonist
and screen writer. A long and successful career
in both print and broadcast media, she has
previously won the Pen Best First Book of Prose
award for her satirical novel, A Girl Like I.
A keen needlewoman and textile collector, her
previous book, Thrift to Fantasy: Home Textile
Crafts of the 1930s-1950s, won the History
category of the Montana Book Awards in 2006.
She has exhibited her extensive collection of
women’s domestic handcrafts and contemporary
embroidery in Wellington and Auckland.
In the Libri Lounge, Rosemary will talk about The
Social History of Aprons from her latest publication,
With Bold Needle and Thread: Adventures in
Vintage Needlecraft, a magnificent vintage
craft and needlework book that maps a range
of craft projects from the 1920s to 1950s.
