NZSO: Heroic Beethoven

The first four notes of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony
comprise one of the most famous moments in
the history of music. An evening of exhilarating
and heroic music performed by the New Zealand
Symphony Orchestra under the baton of the
talented Bulgarian conductor Danail Rachev.
Opening this concert is the overture to The Ruins
of Athens. Composed as a celebration of the
modern city of Pest, this resplendent overture
starts this unique celebration of Beethoven
before the NZSO performs one of his early
triumphs, the sunny Second Symphony.
The Symphony No. 2 in D major was composed
in Beethoven’s twenties, when he battled with
hearing problems, it is one of his early triumphs - a
sunny work which hints at future glories.

Beethoven reCYCLE 2013 - Appassionata
Beethoven’s cycle of 32 sonatas is the most
remarkable series for piano ever composed.
Written the whole length of his creative life,
from the early Op 2 dedicated to Haydn to the
mighty Op 111 which takes the piano into the
realms of pure imagination, this is the “New
Testament of the piano repertoire”. Their famous
names – Moonlight, Tempest, Appassionata,
Waldstein – have entered the pantheon of cultural
history. This is programme four of the seven
parts touring NZ as Beethoven reCYCLE in 2013.

sonatas again. The thing about Beethoven is
that he synthesised human psychological truths,
with all their subtlety and all their range, into
music. Beethoven tells you about yourself.”
Michael Houston is a multiple prize-winner with
a distinguished reputation as an outstanding
player and was awarded the CNZM in 2012.
