1955. In <strong>the</strong> well-kempt Takapuna garden lovingly<br />
tended by <strong>the</strong> literary fa<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> nation, Frank<br />
Sargeson, <strong>the</strong> vegetables are nearly ready and his<br />
old mate Harry is due for ano<strong>the</strong>r stay any day soon.<br />
But behind Frank’s famous macrocarpa hedge<br />
a mysterious world is being shaped by an<br />
enigmatic new voice – Janet Frame has come<br />
<strong>to</strong> stay. Frank’s world is about <strong>to</strong> change.<br />
Janet Frame boarded with Frank Sargeson from<br />
1955 <strong>to</strong> 1956 in a short but significant stay<br />
during which she wrote her first novel, Owls Do<br />
Cry. She lived and worked in a now-demolished<br />
small army hut behind <strong>the</strong> house. After returning<br />
from Europe in 1963, she was a regular visi<strong>to</strong>r<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> small fibrolite bach w<strong>here</strong> she visited and<br />
stayed with her old friend and erstwhile men<strong>to</strong>r.<br />
A funny, clever and often very moving literary<br />
