THE CATHEDRAL COLLEGE ROCKHAMPTON
MISSION STATEMENT
ABOUT THE COLLEGE
As students, staff, parents and friends of The Cathedral College Community, we strive by word and action to respond
to Christ’s call to ‘Come, live life in all its fullness’. John 10:10
Our College Motto “Come, live life in all its fullness” (John 10:10) invites every member of the College community
to develop their relationship with Jesus, to nurture their individual gifts, and to recognise and celebrate the giftedness
of others. It also invites us to witness Christ’s presence and to make a difference through just and peaceful actions
that show our reverence for all people and the environment.
VISION STATEMENT
We, the members of The Cathedral College community accept the Gospel invitation
“I have come that you might have life - life in all its fullness.”- (John 10:10)
as incorporated in our College motto: “Come, live life in all its fullness.”
We, at The Cathedral College, create community through sharing of faith, living out Gospel values and accepting
change as part of renewal.
Within our Catholic community, we work together to realise the College motto by encouraging all members to
develop their individual gifts, to deepen their personal spirituality and to recognise and celebrate the giftedness of
others.
The charisms of both Catherine McAuley and Edmund Rice call our community to “act justly, to love tenderly and to
walk humbly with their God” (Micah 6:8).
Inspired by their example and in keeping with the Gospel ideal and the College motto, we are committed to...
• witnessing Christ’s presence in the world and making a difference through just and peaceful actions that show
our reverence for all people and the environment
• living as an integral and vital part of the wider community acknowledging that our eternal home is with God
• celebrating life in all its fullness by encouraging excellence and enthusiastic participation in all activities
• nurturing and supporting community members on their journey to accepting individual responsibility for their own
self-development in response to the opportunities provided
• accepting, protecting and encouraging the unique giftedness of each community member
• providing opportunities for growth across all areas of human endeavour, including the spiritual, the academic,
the social, the personal, the cultural, the emotional and the physical
• working together to build a community of support for each other within our College
• acknowledging the special circumstances of boarding students and supporting their particular needs
• valuing those traditions of the past by which the ethos of this College is influenced.
THE CATHEDRAL COLLEGE ROCKHAMPTON
COLLEGE HISTORY
The Cathedral College was founded in 1991 as a Catholic Co-educational College for students in Years 8-12. Prior to
the establishment of The Cathedral College, the Sisters of Mercy’s Range College for girls and St Joseph’s Christian
Brothers’ College for boys offered Catholic secondary education for the families of Central Queensland for nearly one
hundred years. Boarding accommodation for girls was also provided by the Sisters of Mercy at their first Convent in
Kent Street and then on the site of the Range College in Agnes Street.
At the end of 1990, the Sisters of Mercy and the Christian Brothers handed over their educational responsibilities to the
Catholic Education Office of the Diocese of Rockhampton. Our College is an integral part of the Catholic Education
System of the Diocese of Rockhampton under the leadership of the Bishop of Rockhampton, Bishop Brian Heenan
and the Director of Catholic Education, Miss Leesa Jeffcoat.
Our College began with 340 Years 8-10 students with Year 11 being added in 1992 and Year 12 in 1993. Continuing the
tradition of the Sisters of Mercy, the College operates as a boarding school as accommodation for girls remained on the
site at 265 Agnes Street with the girls travelling to and from the Day Campus by bus. In 2001, boarding accommodation
was provided for boys first on the site of “Bethany” in Agnes Street and then at 210 Upper Dawson Road. The College
enrolment is now approximately 900 students in Years 8-12 with 105 teaching, residential and ancillary staff.
Our College Motto “Come, Live Life in all its Fullness” invites every member of the College community to develop
their relationship with Jesus, to nurture their individual gifts and to recognise and celebrate the giftedness of others. It
also invites us to witness Christ’s presence and to make a difference through just and peaceful actions that show our
reverence for all people and the environment.
As a sign of our living commitment to our College Motto, the entire College Community gathers periodically for Liturgies
in St Joseph’s Cathedral which is situated next to our Day Campus. Liturgies of the Word are led by both students and staff
and the Liturgies of the Eucharist are led by our Bishop, Bishop Brian Heenan or our College Chaplain, Father Chris Schick.
St Joseph, husband of Mary and foster-father of Jesus, is the Patron Saint of our College and signifies the importance
of family to the College community. It is our practice to conclude our prayers with “St Joseph - pray for us”.
The College Board and Parents’ and Friends’ Association are very active in supporting the vision and mission of The
Cathedral College.
important that parents/care givers and students actively participate in the communication by listening to and/or
reading the communications from the College.
THE CHRONICLE
The Chronicle is the College’s official newsletter and is available for viewing at 3pm each Wednesday afternoon of
term on the College’s website www.tccr.com.au under News & Events. Families may request a hard copy if preferred
or an email notification through the College’s front office by phoning on 4999 1300.
DAILY NOTICES
Each morning a bulletin, which includes all important College notices, is read to the students in each Pastoral Care
Group. Students may place important notices in the bulletin if they are approved by a member of the College
Leadership Team.
ASSEMBLY
College Assemblies alternate weekly with House Assemblies. At College Assemblies, members of the College staff
address the students on important College issues. Occasionally, members of the wider community use the College
Assembly to address the students and the staff.
CALENDAR
Each family receives a copy of the College Calendar at the beginning of the year so that all are familiar with
important College dates.
OTHER METHODS OF COMMUNICATION
If parents/care givers have any enquiries, they can use any of the following methods of communication:
1. a brief note in the Student Planner for the Subject or Pastoral Care Group teacher
2. a longer note to any staff member
3. a message requesting a staff member to return your call
Parents/care givers may ring the College, but it is often difficult to locate staff as they are usually teaching and
cannot leave the classroom. It is more convenient to leave a message for a staff member to return your call.
4. arrange for an interview
If parents/care givers wish to have an interview with a staff member, it is best to send a message to the staff
member indicating the available times.
CATHEDRAL COLLEGE AS THE PROCEDURES BELOW WILL BE FOLLOWED:
If you don’t get the help you need at first, DON’T give up. Keep reporting your concerns until something is done
and you feel safe again.
THE PROCEDURES which will be implemented to protect the rights of all individuals at the College are based on a 3-level
approach as outlined below. These levels reflect the seriousness that the College places on this type of behaviour.
Level 1 - If, after thorough investigation of a report, it is found that the behaviour is harassment/bullying, the student
• Interview with student, parent/s/care giver/s and Assistant Principal: Students. At this point the harassment/bullying
procedures are clearly explained.
• Official notification sent to parent/s/care giver/s.
• Education phase commences for student exhibiting the unacceptable behaviour. This includes compulsory
sessions with College Counsellor, ongoing monitoring of student behaviour and possible mediation with other
student/s involved if requested.
• Follow-up will also be offered to other student/s affected.
Level 2 - Students already on Level 1 will proceed to this level if any further reports of harassing/bullying behaviours
are substantiated after thorough investigation. At this level the procedure is:
• Parent/s/care giver/s informed of incident.
HOMEWORK
The table below outlines time allocations that are recommended, as a minimum, to be allocated to homework. There
is an expectation that students will need to increase the amount of time spent on homework when they are required to
complete assessment tasks (usually mid to late within each term).
ATTENDANCE AND ASSESSMENT
10 hours
It is not acceptable for students to absent themselves from a school day or part thereof to study for an examination
or to complete assignment work. This practice constitutes an unfair advantage and is indefensible on any grounds.
Senior students who are absent on a school day immediately prior to or the day (or part thereof) of an examination
or due date for an assignment will be required to substantiate such absence with a medical certificate, statutory
declaration or other certified documentation. Failure to do so will require the completion of a supplementary
assessment task.
Attendance at examinations as scheduled is compulsory for all students. It should be noted that this applies not only
to written tests, but also to performances, oral presentations, speeches, and all other forms of practical examination.
During formal examination periods senior students will only be required to attend school when an examination is
scheduled. All senior students not sitting an examination may be engaged in independent study at home. Students
may not leave the school grounds between examination sessions without a leave slip. When attending school during
a formal examination period all students must wear full and correct uniform in line with College policy.
ASSIGNMENTS - SUBMISSION
In the interests of equity, reliability and validity all assignment work should be completed and submitted on time on the
due date. Students are to be advised to treat due dates as absolute deadlines and to aim at an earlier submission of
each assignment.
Assignment submission may coincide with a timetabled lesson in the relevant subject. All other submissions (with or
without special provision) must be made through the ‘assignment box’ located outside the Student Counter entrance
to the College Office. These assignments will be receipted and the assignment passed on to the appropriate teacher.
Teachers will not accept assignments from any student at any other time for themselves or on behalf of other teachers.
ASSIGNMENTS - LATE OR NON-SUBMISSION
An assignment is deemed late if it is not:
• submitted on the due date at the beginning of the lesson for the relevant subject.
• submitted into the ‘assignment box’ (located outside the Student Counter entrance to the College Office) by
3:45pm on the due date specified.
• submitted into the ‘assignment box’ (located outside the Student Counter entrance to the College Office) by
3:45pm on the due date specified with an approved Application for Extension form.
Late assignments cannot be assessed without an approved Application for Extension form. In the interests of equity,
reliability and validity late assignments will only receive a grading based on evidence (draft work) gathered as at the
due date.
In cases where late or non-submission of an assignment compromises the equity, reliability or validity of the assessment
process students will be given 60 minutes in which to respond to the set topic. This 60 minute session will be in the form
of an afternoon detention as designated by the teacher as soon as possible after the specified due date.
Students will not under any circumstances be given a grading where no work exists as evidence to support a result.
If a student, after the provision of reasonable opportunities, has failed to complete mandatory or significant aspects
of the syllabus they may be denied an exit level of achievement or be given fewer semesters of credit for the subject.
This course of action is at the discretion of the Principal and will be communicated in writing to the student and their
parents/care givers. Persistent cases of non-submission of assignments by a student may result in cancellation
of enrolment.
20
THE CATHEDRAL COLLEGE ROCKHAMPTON
ASSIGNMENTS - COMPUTER GENERATED/MULTI-MEDIA ASSIGNMENTS
In extenuating circumstances, should an assignment submission be delayed because of computer malfunction, the
following additional conditions apply:
1. Evidence of work completed to date must be attached to the Application for Extension form. This evidence may be
in the form of:
i. electronic back-up on appropriate media
ii.
iii.
hand written draft copy
comprehensive written notes
2. A signed note (or substantial documentary evidence including medical certificates, statutory declarations or other
certified documents) from a parent/care giver explaining the situation must be attached to the Application for
Extension form.
Should a malfunction of the printer occur, the assignment should be submitted electronically on or before the due date
via electronic data transfer (as an attachment to an e-mail or appropriate data storage media: CD, DVD, USB Flash
drive or any other USB plug and play storage device). A printed copy must be submitted the following school day. This
printed copy must be identical to the document submitted electronically (the previous day).
ASSIGNMENTS - REQUESTS FOR EXTENSION
Students may make application for an extension of time to complete an assignment. Such an application must be
made on the basis of demonstrable educational disadvantage related to a specific assignment using an Application
for Extension form. This form is supplied by the subject teachers giving them initial scope for refusal. Once an
application has been initiated the teacher and Academic Dean will make a recommendation.
In the absence of extenuating circumstances, applications made within 5 days of the original due date, without
necessary supporting documentation or completed out of order will not be considered.
EXAMINATIONS
Examinations are the major means of evaluating levels of achievement. Attendance at examinations as scheduled
is therefore compulsory for all students. It should be noted that this applies not only to written tests, but also to
performances, oral presentations, speeches and all other forms of practical examination.
Examinations - Formal Examination Periods
Formal examination periods are communicated via the College Calendar, the newsletter and the College website
and include:
Semester One – end of first term (Year 11 and 12) and end of semester (Year 10, 11 and 12)
Semester Two – end of third term/pre-verification (Year 11 and 12) and end of semester (Year 10, 11 and 12)
Examinations - Sitting in advance of the scheduled date
It is not acceptable for a student to sit a written examination prior to the remainder of the class or cohort because of
anticipated absence on the scheduled date.
Senior students must apply for special provision for a supplementary examination to be put in place. Such an
application must be made on the basis of demonstrable educational disadvantage related to a specific examination
using an Application for Special Provision form.
A student may not request a deferral to allow time to cover work missed through absence of an unsubstantiated
nature. The College, however, does reserve the right to exempt or exclude any student from an examination should it
be considered that circumstances warrant this.
Examinations - Student Absence from an Examination
Should a student be unable to attend a particular examination as scheduled, there are set procedures which must
be followed.
If there has not been a prior explanation of absence on the day of an examination, a parent or care giver is
required to contact the College Office before 9.00am on that day. Unless exemption from the examination has been
granted, the student must report to the Academic Dean immediately on returning to school for advice of subsequent
assessment arrangements.
Documentary evidence (medical certificates, statutory declarations and/or other certified documents)
explaining the absence must be provided at this time. Special provision may also be made available in cases of
missed examinations.
THE CATHEDRAL COLLEGE ROCKHAMPTON
SPECIAL PROVISION
Special provision in relation to assessment may be available on a number of levels depending on the learning
needs of students. What is critical is that the process for determining appropriate special provision is equitable,
reasonable and accountable. The purpose of special provision is to remove educational disadvantage without
giving unfair advantage.
The consideration of applications for special provision is a consultative process involving the student’s teachers,
House Dean, the appropriate Academic Dean and the Assistant Principal: Studies that applies the Queensland Studies
Authority (QSA) policy on special provision within the context of The Cathedral College. The QSA Policy on Special
Provisions for School-based Assessments in Authority and Authority-registered Subjects (January 2009) is available on
their web page (www.qsa.qld.edu.au).
APPLICATIONS FOR SPECIAL PROVISION
Special provision at The Cathedral College is most commonly applied but not limited to the provision of special
arrangements (extensions and variations to conditions). An extension of time for the submission of an assignment may
be granted in exceptional circumstances and only if an Application for Special Provision form has been sought from
the Assistant Principal: Studies and completed prior to the due date (see above – Assignments - Requests for Extension).
Approval for special provision of a more general nature may also be granted by the Assistant Principal: Studies in
consultation with all stakeholders upon completion of an Application for Special Provision form.
Supplementary assessment items may also be used as a form of special provision to allow students an opportunity to
selectively update performances. The use of supplementary assessments is at the discretion of the Academic Dean in
consultation with the Assistant Principal: Studies where other in-class evidence is not available.
Special provision may also be applied by teachers in consultation with the relevant Academic Dean in the
interpretation of student assessment profiles. Atypical performances may be identified and discounted in the
determination of overall levels of achievement. However, care must be taken to ensure that such cases are in fact
aberrant and not legitimate indicators of limited ability in specific areas. Substantial documentary evidence (medical
certificates/reports, statutory declarations and/or other certified documents) is required to support the identification of
atypical performances.
AUTHENTICATION OF STUDENT WORK
Students should be aware that the following are acts of plagiarism:
• paragraphs or sentences copied word for word and not enclosed in quotation marks, or appropriately cited
• paragraphs or sentences paraphrased or summarized, and the source of the material not acknowledged
within the text
• taking an idea or work from another person without reference being made to the source
• copying some or all of the work of a fellow student, older sibling or past student
• producing work in conjunction with a parent or tutor when it is purported to be the student’s own
independent research
• using electronically available media, images, audio, video, graphics or photographs without indicating
their origin.
It must be stressed that only the original part of the assessment instrument will be graded against the subject standards
and criteria, the plagiarised component will not be given any credit.
Students must take great care to acknowledge their sources and be aware that plagiarism is a form of CHEATING.
APPEALS AGAINST ASSESSMENT DECISIONS
All students have the avenue to appeal against assessment decisions. The classroom teacher is the first point of
reference for appeals. A notation of the appeal and outcome is to be made on the student’s assessment profile. If a
satisfactory outcome is not forthcoming, the appeal may be referred to the Academic Dean, AP-Studies and finally the
Principal respectively. The Principal’s decision on all assessment appeals is final.
STUDY PERIODS (YEAR 11 & 12)
Senior students who choose Study of Religion (SOR) or a school based traineeship or undertake a recognised TAFE
course, are given the flexibility to access Study Periods to work independently on research and assignments in their
various subjects (it is not possible for students to engage in practical subjects during Study Periods). These Study
Periods provide an ideal preparation for later life when students are expected to be able to work responsibly with
different degrees of supervision. At The Cathedral College Year 11 and 12 students are allocated a designated study
room for the duration of the lesson. At all times students are expected to be responsible and to show respect for their
peers. Study privileges may be withdrawn from those who do not act accordingly.
REPORTING
Interim reports are issued towards the end of Term One each year. The interim report is a semi-formal communication
with parents/care givers outlining student progress (academic achievement) and application (behaviour and effort)
during Term One.
Major reporting is done at the end of each semester. The end of semester report is a formal communication with
parents/care givers indicating student achievement within subjects, against subject specific criteria, in the
current semester.
Achievement is reported against the Standards outlined in the QCAR Framework (Essential Learnings and Standards)
derived from the appropriate Key Learning Area syllabus. These Standards are:
A
B
C
D
PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Scheduled parent/teacher interviews are made available at two points throughout the year (at the beginning of Term
Two and Term Three). The purpose of scheduled parent/teacher interviews is to provide an opportunity for parents/
care givers to meet with teachers to discuss the progress and learning needs of students. Whilst scheduled parent/
teacher interviews are seen as an important communication between home and school, interviews may be requested
by parents/care givers or teachers at any time.
HOW TO REFERENCE CORRECTLY
BIBLIOGRAPHY/ REFERENCE LIST – APA (6TH EDITION)
Bibliography – a list of all sources used even if not cited in the text.
Reference list – contains only details of sources cited in the text.
Why reference? Referencing is necessary to avoid plagiarism (copying), to verify quotations, and to enable
readers to follow-up and read more fully the cited author’s arguments.
Referencing is a standard method of acknowledging sources of information and ideas that students use in
assignments in a way that uniquely identifies their source. Direct quotations, facts and figures, images, ideas and
theories etc. from both published and unpublished works must be referenced.
HANDY TIPS – USING APA (6TH EDITION)
• Bibliographic information for books is written on the title cover page inside the book.
• Use the latest copyright date, not a reprint date. Look for the little ©
• Use the first place of publication listed where there are several places listed.
• Do not include the country after the place of publication but include the state if the place of publication is not
well known (eg Rozelle, NSW)
• Arrange and list resources alphabetically. Authors are listed according to surname.
• Where the resource has no author, it is cited by its title and ordered alphabetically by the first significant word of
the title. (eg do not use “The” )
• Write the bibliography/reference list on a separate page.
• All resources are listed together. There is no separation between web sites, books, newspapers, journals.
• In 6th edition, lower case in titles is used except for the first word, names of places and people and for journals eg.
Cultures of the ancient world.
• Use italics (not underscoring) for titles if computer written.
• Underscoring is used if bibliography is hand-written.
• Either single or double quotation marks is acceptable.
• Correct use of full-stops, commas, colons, semi-colons, curved and/or square brackets as per examples is
essential
• Matter of choice as to whether single or double-line spacing is used between resources. Ask your teacher for their
preference.
Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21
There was a wedding in Cäna, Jesus
and his disciples had been invited.
When the wine ran out, the mother of
Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”
And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what
concern is that to you and to me? My
hour has not yet come.” Jesus said to
the servants, “Fill the jars with water.”
And they filled them up to the brim. He
said to them, “Now draw some out,
and take it to the chief steward.” So
they took it. When the steward tasted
the water that had become wine, he did
not know where it came from, so the
steward called the bridegroom and said
to him, “Everyone serves the good wine
first, and then the inferior wine after the
guests have become drunk. But you
have kept the good wine until now.”
Jesus did this, the first of his signs and
his disciples believed in him.
Reflection
In the full version of this story, Mary tells
the servants to ‘Do whatever he tells
you’. At first, Jesus is reluctant but he
complies with his Mother’s wishes. How
similar that is for us. Mothers have a
way of knowing what needs to be done,
asking and expecting that we will do
what is right. What is Jesus telling you
to do?
Prayer
Lord, help us to be sensitive to the
needs of others. May we be ‘good wine’
to those we meet each day.
Amen.
Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21
When Jesus came to Nazareth, where
he had been brought up, he went to the
synagogue on the sabbath day, as was
his custom. He stood up to read, “The
Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because
he has anointed me to bring good news
to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim
release to the captives and recovery of
sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go
free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s
favor.” And he rolled up the scroll, gave
it back to the attendant, and sat down.
The eyes of all in the synagogue were
fixed on him. Then he began to say to
them, “Today this scripture has been
fulfilled in your hearing.”
Reflection
Through our Baptism the Spirit of the
Lord has anointed us to be bearers of
the Good News to others; to be faithful
disciples bringing Jesus to the world
through our lives, the way we work, talk
and play with those at home, those at
school and everyone we meet.
Prayer
Lord, help us to be doers, who
through our actions bring the healing
touch of Christ to those we meet,
our neighbours.
Amen.
Luke 4:21-30
Jesus said “Today this scripture has
been fulfilled in your hearing.” All spoke
well of him and were amazed at the
gracious words that came from his
mouth. They said, “Is not this Joseph’s
son?” He said to them, “Doubtless you
will quote to me this proverb, Doctor,
cure yourself! And you will say, Do here
also in your hometown the things that
we have heard you did at Capernaum.”
And he said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet
is accepted in the prophets hometown.
When they heard this, all in the
synagogue were filled with rage. They
got up, drove him out of the town, and
led him to the brow of the hill on which
their town was built, so that they might
hurl him off the cliff. But he passed
through the midst of them and went on
his way.
Reflection
Too often we look for role models far
away from ourselves or fail to recognise
the abilities within those close to us.
This was happening to Jesus. I wonder
how he felt? We are often hurt when we
are overlooked. Help us to see the signs
of Jesus working in our lives through
those close to us.
Prayer
Lord, each one of us is the hands,
feet and voice of Jesus to others.
Give us the strength to be Jesus to
each other.
Amen.
Luke 5:1-11
Jesus got into one of the boats, the one
belonging to Simon, and asked him to
put out a little way from the shore. Then
he sat down and taught the crowds
from the boat. When he had finished
speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out
into the deep water and let down your
nets for a catch.” Simon answered,
“Master, we have worked all night long
but have caught nothing. Yet if you say
so, I will let down the nets.” When they
had done this, they caught so many fish
that their nets were beginning to break.
When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down
at Jesus knees, saying, “Go away from
me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For he
and all who were with him were amazed
at the catch of fish. Then Jesus said to
Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on
you will be catching people.” When they
had brought their boats to shore, they
left everything and followed him.
Reflection
On our own we can do little. Without
hope we can achieve little. The disciples
had caught nothing. Jesus supports and
sustains us. He is our hope; we need to
trust in him. When the disciples see the
bounty Jesus brings they realise their
own sinfulness. Jesus raises them up
and they follow him. Are you ready to
follow Jesus?
Prayer
Lord, give us the courage to ‘put out into
the deep’, to take the risk of following
you unconditionally.
Amen.
Year 8/9 Information Evening
Luke 4:1-13
Jesus was led by the Spirit in the
wilderness, where for forty days he was
tempted by the devil. He ate nothing
at all during those days, and when
they were over, he was famished. The
devil said to him, “If you are the Son of
God, command this stone to become
a loaf of bread.” Jesus answered him,
“It is written, One does not live by
bread alone.” Then the devil led him
up and showed him in an instant all
the kingdoms of the world. And the
devil said to him, “To you I will give
their glory and all this authority; for it
has been given over to me, and I give
it to anyone I please. If you, then, will
worship me, it will all be yours.” Jesus
answered him, “It is written, Worship
the Lord your God, and serve only him.”
Then the devil took him to Jerusalem,
and placed him on the pinnacle of the
temple, saying to him, “If you are the
Son of God, throw yourself down from
here, for it is written, He will command
his angels concerning you, to protect
you and On their hands they will bear
you up, so that you will not dash your
foot against a stone.” Jesus answered
him, “It is said, Do not put the Lord your
God to the test. ”
Reflection
Before making major decisions or
beginning new phases in his ministry
Jesus took himself to a quiet place to
pray and reflect in the presence of God.
When we have important decisions to
make or need guidance, we too need to
take time to pray, reflect and sit in the
presence of God. Many temptations will
come our way, as often happens when
we meditate. Release them, let them go
and focus on the main vision, Jesus.
Prayer
In this Year of Grace, Let us sit quietly
in the presence of Jesus, making time
to talk with him and in silence to listen
to Jesus.
Amen.
Luke 9:28-36
Jesus took with him Peter and John and
James, and went up on the mountain
to pray. And while he was praying,
the appearance of his face changed,
and his clothes became dazzling
white. Suddenly they saw two men
Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They
appeared in glory and were speaking
of his departure, which he was about
to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter
and his companions were weighed down
with sleep; but since they had stayed
awake, they saw his glory and the two
men who stood with him. Just as they
were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus,
“Master, it is good for us to be here; let us
make three dwellings, one for you, one for
Moses, and one for Elijah” – not knowing
what he said. While he was saying this,
a cloud came and overshadowed them;
and they were terrified as they entered the
cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice
that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen;
listen to him!”
Reflection
Mountain-top experiences are important
but so is coming down from the
‘mountain’ and living our life in the
reflected glory of these moments. How
blessed were Peter, John and James to
see the glorified face of Jesus. Let us
spend time with Jesus and do as the
voice of God says: “Listen to him!” We
can do this by taking a sentence or two
from Scripture and reflecting on it
in prayer.
Prayer
Lord, let us see your face. Change us,
help us to listen to you and to be your
face in the world.
Amen.
Luke 13: 1-9
Jesus said, “Unless you repent, you will
all perish as those eighteen who were
killed when the tower of Siloam fell on
them – do you think that they were worse
offenders than all the others living in
Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you
repent, you will all perish just as they
did.” Then he told this parable: “A man
had a fig tree planted in his vineyard;
and he came looking for fruit on it and
found none. So he said to the gardener,
See here! For three years I have come
looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still
I find none. Cut it down! Why should it
be wasting the soil? He replied, Sir, let
it alone for one more year, until I dig
around it and put manure on it. If it bears
fruit next year, well and good; but if not,
you can cut it down.
Reflection
Jesus, unlike the opinion of his day,
did not consider that the 18 killed by
the falling tower at Siloam were killed
because of their sin but that all those in
Jerusalem were sinful enough to warrant
death. He calls them to repentance. The
parable of the fig tree reminds us that
God waits patiently
for us to turn around and return to
him. Lent is a time for us to reflect on
our lives.
Prayer
Lord, help us see the need to repent.
Give us time, like the barren fig tree,
to freely choose to repent our sins
and through our good deeds
bear good fruit.
Amen.
Luke 15: 1-3, 11-32
Then Jesus said, “There was a man
who had two sons. The younger of them
said to his father, ‘Father, give me the
share of the property that will belong to
me. After he got his share, he gathered
all he had and traveled to a distant
country, and there he squandered his
property in dissolute living. When he
had spent everything, a severe famine
took place throughout that country, and
he began to be in need. So he set off
home, hoping to be forgiven. When his
father saw him approaching, he was
filled with compassion; he ran and put
his arms around him and kissed him.
And they began to celebrate. Now his
elder son heard the music and dancing
and became angry. He said to his
father, ‘Listen! … you have never given
me even a young goat so that I might
celebrate with my friends. But when
this son of yours came back, who has
devoured your property with prostitutes,
you killed the fatted calf for him!’ Then
the father said to him, ‘Son, you are
always with me, and all that is mine
is yours. But we had to celebrate and
rejoice, because this brother of yours
was dead and has come to life; he was
lost and has been found.’ ”
Reflection
Would you like a brother like one of
these two lads? One seems irresponsible
the other appears to be overly
judgemental. How would you like a
Father/Parent/Teacher who forgives you
before the words asking pardon are out
of your mouth? A person who rejoices
when you turn around and return to the
right path? God forgives, God welcomes
us home and, in the words of the great
St Augustine, our hearts are restless until
they find their rest in God.
Prayer
Let us pray that we may forgive
unconditionally like our heavenly Father.
Help us to accept ourselves and be
people who bring peace and healing.
Amen.
John 8:1-11
The scribes and the Pharisees
brought a woman who had been caught
in adultery; and making her stand before
all of them, they said to him, “Teacher,
this woman was caught in the very act
of committing adultery. Now in the law
Moses commanded us to stone such
women. Now what do you say?” They
said this to test him, so that they might
have some charge to bring against him.
Jesus bent down and wrote with his
finger on the ground. When they kept
on questioning him, he straightened up
and said to them, “Let anyone among
you who is without sin be the first to
throw a stone at her.” And once again
he bent down and wrote on the ground.
When they heard it, they went away, one
by one, beginning with the elders; and
Jesus was left alone with the woman
standing before him. Jesus straightened
up and said to her, “Woman, where are
they? Has no one condemned you?”
She said, “No one, sir.”And Jesus said,
“Neither do I condemn you. Go your
way, and from now on do not sin again.”
Reflection
In the scripture passage, Jesus
challenges those who are ready to
condemn the woman to look at their
own lives and if they have lived without
sinning. At some stage in our own lives
we have all sinned and we have all
asked for forgiveness. The important
thing to remember is that we must learn
to reflect on our behaviour towards those
we come in contact with. Do we treat
other how we want to be treated? Do
we remind others of their past failings
and forget our own. Jesus forgave the
woman for her failings without question
– let us learn to forgive and forget others
sinfulness, just as we would want that
for ourselves.
Prayer
Jesus, through your example, help us to
forgive and forget the failings of others.
Amen.
Jesus said to two of the disciples “Go
into the village ahead of you, and as
you enter it you will find tied there a
colt that has never been ridden. Untie it
and bring it here. If anyone asks you,
Why are you untying it? just say this,
The Lord needs it. ”So those who were
sent departed and found it as he had
told them. As they were untying the
colt, its owners asked them, “Why are
you untying the colt? They said, “The
Lord needs it.” Then they brought it to
Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks
on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As
he rode along, people kept spreading
their cloaks on the road. As he was
now approaching the path, the whole
multitude of the disciples began to
praise God joyfully with a loud voice
for all the deeds of power that they had
seen, saying, “Blessed is the king who
comes in the name of the Lord! Peace
in heaven, and glory in the highest
heaven!” Some of the Pharisees in the
crowd said to him, “Teacher, order your
disciples to stop.” He answered, “I tell
you, if these were silent, the stones
would shout out.”
Reflection
Jubilant, Rejoicing, Elated, Joyful – all
words used to describe Triumphant. I
wonder is Jesus felt all of these things
as he made his entry into Jerusalem.
Watching the crowd build in size and
throwing down their cloaks for him to
walk. Jesus showed great strength and
courage during this time of uncertainty,
for not everyone was pleased to see
him enter into Jerusalem. By doing
what he did, Jesus demonstrated an
emotional toughness; he walked proudly
amongst the crowd standing firm in his
convictions and his faith prepared for
the coming events.Do you stand strong
John 20:1-9
Early on the first day of the week, while
it was still dark, Mary Magdalëne came
to the tomb and saw that the stone had
been removed from the tomb. So she
ran and went to Simon Peter and the
other disciple, the one whom Jesus
loved, and said to them, “They have
taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we
do not know where they have laid him.”
Then Peter and the other disciple set out
and went toward the tomb. The two were
running together, but the other disciple
outran Peter and reached the tomb
first. He bent down to look in and saw
the linen wrappings lying there, but he
did not go in. Then Simon Peter came,
following him, and went into the tomb.
He saw the linen wrappings lying there,
and the cloth that had been on Jesus
head, not lying with the linen wrappings
but rolled up in a place by itself. Then
the other disciple, who reached the
tomb first, also went in, and he saw
and believed; for as yet they did not
understand the scripture, that he must
rise from the dead.
Reflection
Jesus rose from the dead, so why had
the stone been removed from the tomb?
This was to make sure that everyone
knew Jesus had risen – just as he had
told the disciples he would come again.
The significance of Jesus rising from
the dead is a reminder that with God
everything tis possible. When we feel
troubled, anxious or worried, through
prayer and faith we can be awakened
and reminded of God’s love for us. God
calls us to look at the things in our lives
that bring us down, and to replace them
with life giving gifts – so that we can rise
again – renewed in spirit and hope for a
better world.
Prayer
God of life, Awaken in us a new hope for
a new day. Guide us towards those who
‘give us life’ and encourage us to rise
up and be the person you have created
us to be.
Amen.
AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS
He was ten years old and already in
prison. Michael was in a high security
juvenile prison for a very serious
crime. I, on the other hand, was just a
seminarian studying for the priesthood
and given the responsibility of visiting
Michael and his friends each week.
I would take my guitar with me, sing a
few songs, talk about the songs and
then just hang out with the guys and
girls and chat for a while. The subject of
God and religion often came up. One
day 10-year-old Michael surprised me
when he said: “Hey Rob, I know God
has the time and energy for you, but he
doesn’t care about me. He doesn’t have
the time for me. Not after what I did!”
With this thought in my mind I grabbed
my iPhone and began to take some
notes and the notes eventually became a
song. I called the song “At the Foot of the
Cross”. It speaks about a person walking
alone. He is lost and confused and feels
abandoned. He wants to draw close to
God but he is afraid. In his fear he hears
a voice telling him that no matter what
he has done, or where he is from, or how
far away he has run, there will always be
room for him at the foot of the Cross.
The foot of the Cross is the place where
we can lay down the mess, mistakes
and sin we carry to be accepted by
the unconditional care and mercy of
a loving God.
I thought long and hard about what he
said, but the more I thought about it, the
more I realised how mistaken he was. You
see, Jesus was the friend of those who
made mistake, after mistake, after mistake.
He was the friend of sinners. In fact he
loved sinners so much that he gave up
his time and his life for them. Jesus had
the time for prostitutes, thieves, liars and
murderers. He made the time and found
the energy because he cared for them,
loved them and had faith in their intrinsic
goodness. Of course he had the time and
energy for Michael.
I continued to think and pray about
Michael’s words and about God’s
amazing love for Michael. Jesus died on
a Cross for Michael and in dying he
opened up the opportunity for Michael
to become a saint.
AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS
There are many paths to follow, voices calling out you’re name,
bringing joys, others sorrows, but all is pointless when you’re alone.
Striding wounded and forsaken, shattered by your guilt and shame,
feeling lost, isolated, O soul, my soul, I need a saviour!
So come see, come rest, wherever you are.
Come broken, whole, however you are. He calls your name whoever you are.
There is room for you, at the foot of the cross.
Live and learn, learn to live, cradled in the arms of Love.
To the cross, rights abandoned. You’re alive! You’re alive!
So come see, come rest, wherever you are.
Come broken, whole, however you are. He calls your name, whoever you are.
There is room for you, at the foot of the cross.
There is room for you, at the foot of the cross.
Come see, come rest, at the foot of the cross.
There’s room for you, at the foot of the cross.
Come see, find rest, at the foot of the cross.
So come see, come rest, wherever you are.
Come broken, whole, however you are.
So come see, come rest, wherever you are.
John 10: 27-30
My sheep hear my voice. I know them,
and they follow me. I give them eternal
life, and they will never perish. No one
will snatch them out of my hand. What
my Father has given me is greater than
all else, and no one can snatch it out of
the Fathers hand. The Father and I are
one.”
Reflection
‘My Sheep hear my voice’. Jesus wants
us to hear his voice and his words. He
wants us to know him. Jesus wants
us to understand that we are his sheep
and his is our shepherd. He wants us
to follow his voice; hear his words of
support, encouragement, hope and love
in our lives. As we all know, life can
often get very busy, we get distracted
and we don’t always hear what is being
said to us. Jesus is our compass, our
guide, if we stop, listen we will hear his
voice and his message of love.
Prayer
Jesus, ever present, every true.
Help us to open our mind, heart
and ears to hear your voice.
Amen.
John 13: 31-35
When he had gone out, Jesus said,
“Now the Son of Man has been glorified,
and God has been glorified in him.
If God has been glorified in him, God
will also glorify him in himself and
will glorify him at once. Little children,
I am with you only a little longer. You
will look for me; and as I said to the
Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am
going, you cannot come. I give you a
new commandment, that you love one
another. Just as I have loved you, you
also should love one another.
By this everyone will know that you
are my disciples, if you have love for
one another.”
Reflection
We have all been given the ability to be
creative, to have freewill, to be loved
and to love – God gave us these things.
Jesus calls us to love one another just
as he loves us. Loving one another is
about hope, patience and understanding
– something that we all have within us,
and we need to be an example of this
to others in our homes, schools and
work places.
Prayer
Jesus, You gave us the ultimate sacrifice
– your life so that we could live, help us
To remember that when we show love
To others through our words And actions
that we to, bring life.
Amen.
John 14: 23-29
Jesus answered him, “Those who love
me will keep my word, and my Father
will love them, and we will come to
them and make our home with them.
Whoever does not love me does not
keep my words; and the word that you
hear is not mine, but is from the Father
who sent me. “I have said these things
to you while I am still with you. But the
Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the
Father will send in my name, will teach
you everything, and remind you of all
that I have said to you. Peace I leave
with you; my peace I give to you. I do
not give to you as the world gives. Do
not let your hearts be troubled, and do
not let them be afraid. You heard me
say to you, ‘I am going away, and I am
coming to you. If you loved me, you
would rejoice that I am going to the
Father, because the Father is greater than
I. And now I have told you this before it
occurs, so that when it does occur, you
may believe.
Reflection
This scripture passage is about keeping
God’s word. How do we do this? God’s
words teach us about what we need
to do to live a full and happy life. God
has given us all gifts and if we follow
his words he will help us stay on the
straight and narrow and not veer off the
path before us. It is through our words
and actions we learn that with God all
things are made possible.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Help guide us on the
path to happiness. Remind us, that
through prayer and reflection all things
are achievable.
Luke 24: 46-53
Jesus said “Thus it is written, that the
Messiah is to suffer and to rise from
the dead on the third day, and that
repentance and forgiveness of sins is
to be proclaimed in his name to all
nations, beginning from Jerusalem
You are witnesses of these things. And
see, I am sending upon you what my
Father promised; so stay here in the city
until you have been clothed with power
from on high.” Then he led them out
as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his
hands, he blessed them. While he was
blessing them, he withdrew from them
and was carried up into heaven. And
they worshiped him, and returned to
Jerusalem with great joy; and they were
continually in the temple blessing God.
Mothers’ Day Mass 8am St Joseph’s Cathedral
Reflection
The disciples’ faith in Jesus had been
confirmed in a miraculous spectacle.
They knew what God’s love really was
and went back to Jerusalem to tell it to
the city. We don’t have the privilege of
seeing a miraculous vision, as we were
not witness to the brutality of Jesus’
human death. But we do carry on the
same mission – to return to the world
and share the truth of God’s love.
Prayer
Lord, the bringer of the truth and the
way, strengthen our faith so that while
we do not see, we believe, and share
your love.
“If you love me, you will keep my
Advocate, to be with you forever. Jesus
answered him, “Those who love me will
them, and we will come to them and
make our home with them. Whoever
Reflection
If we fill ourselves with the right spirit – a
holy spirit – we will follow the teachings
of Jesus. Jesus came to fulfil the law
and revive its spirit. He came to remind
and reinforce the intention of the laws
so that they could be relevant to all
Jews and non-Jews, then and forever.
Jesus’ teachings are not a list of
commandments, but a change of heart.
Prayer
Jesus, you bring to us a different way,
a way of the heart and spirit. Help me to
look deep within to let this spirit into my
heart so that everything I do is in your
John 16: 12-15
“For God so loved the world that he
gave his only Son, so that everyone who
believes in him may not perish but may
have eternal life. “Indeed, God did not
send the Son into the world to condemn
the world, but in order that the world
might be saved through him. Those
who believe in him are not condemned;
but those who do not believe are
condemned already, because they have
not believed in the name of the only Son
of God.
Reflection
Jesus ‘saves’ the world by giving us
the opportunity to ‘tune-in’ and believe
in a different kind of way. We are not
following a list of do’s and don’ts. We
believe in our hearts and this drives our
action and behaviour to compassion
and respect. If people all over the earth
believed and acted in such a way,
wouldn’t the world be saved from much
sadness? Wherever we believe, and
feel and behave accordingly, Jesus is
present, offering salvation.
Prayer
Lord, ‘let me be an instrument of your
peace’. Help me to feel and act towards
others with the love and respect of
Jesus’ teachings, so that we may be
brought closer to your presence.
Amen.
Luke 9:11-17
The day was drawing to a close, and
the twelve came to him and said, “Send
the crowd away, so that they may
go into the surrounding villages and
countryside, to lodge and get provisions;
for we are here in a deserted place.”
But he said to them, “You give them
something to eat.” They said, “We
have no more than five loaves and two
fish - unless we are to go and buy food
for all these people.” For there were
about five thousand men. And he said
to his disciples, “Make them sit down
in groups of about fifty each.” They did
so and made them all sit down. And
taking the five loaves and the two fish,
he looked up to heaven, and blessed
and broke them, and gave them to the
disciples to set before the crowd. And
all ate and were filled. What was left
over was gathered up, twelve baskets of
broken pieces.
Reflection
This miracle is a wonderful story. But
a key part of this is the small amount
of blessed food being placed before
the many, and all having enough with
plenty left over. This is a symbol of
God’s love. Everybody can take part.
Everybody can be at peace. There is
no order, rank or position in line to eat,
or receive His attention. God is love
enough and more so. How would it feel
to have more than enough love?
The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Prayer
Lord thank you for sharing the wisdom
to see God’s love. You have blessed us
with this gift and like the disciples, help
us to share this love with others so that
all have more than enough. Amen.
Luke 7:11-17
Soon afterwards Jesus went to a town
called Näin, and his disciples and
a large crowd went with him. As he
approached the gate of the town, a man
who had died was being carried out.
He was his mother’s only son, and she
was a widow; and with her was a large
crowd from the town. When the Lord
saw her, he had compassion for her
and said to her, “Do not weep.” Then
he came forward and touched the bier,
and the bearers stood still. And he said,
“Young man, I say to you, rise!” The
dead man sat up and began to speak,
and Jesus gave him to his mother. Fear
seized all of them; and they glorified
God, saying, “A great prophet has
risen among us!” and “God has looked
favorably on his people!”
Reflection
The gospel writers place great store
on these types of healing stories.
They are necessary to set the scene for
Jesus’ resurrection. Where love and
compassion were deep, Jesus could
work and provide his followers with
belief such that they could eventually
consider that He could rise again.
Prayer
Lord, give us the conviction to love
in the way that allows us to see your
grace, and let this work through us so
that your favour can be felt among your
people again.
Amen.
Luke 7:36 – 8:3
Jesus went to eat with a Pharisee. A
sinful woman also came and stood
behind Jesus at his feet, weeping, and
began to bathe his feet with her tears
and to dry them with her hair. Then she
continued kissing his feet and anointing
them with the ointment. Now when the
Pharisee who had invited him saw it,
he said to himself, “If this man were
a prophet, he would have known who
and what kind of woman this is who
is touching him—that she is a sinner.”
Then turning toward the woman, Jesus
said to Simon, “Do you see this woman?
I entered your house; you gave me no
water for my feet, but she has bathed my
feet with her tears and dried them with
her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from
the time I came in she has not stopped
kissing my feet. You did not anoint my
head with oil, but she has anointed
my feet with ointment. Therefore, I tell
you, her sins, which were many, have
been forgiven; hence she has shown
great love. But the one to whom little is
forgiven, loves little.” Then he said to
her, “Your sins are forgiven.” But those
who were at the table with him began
to say among themselves, “Who is this
who even forgives sins?” And he said to
the woman, “Your faith has saved you;
go in peace.” Jesus and his disciples
travelled further in the region, healing
and spreading the good news.
Reflection
Faith and love were central to Jesus’
teachings. Jesus was showing that
love is the intent of the law, that those
who rigidly applied rules were without
compassion and humility, and could not
feel forgiveness because they could not
acknowledge the harm they had done.
He wanted everyone to believe and know
that people had to express love and
compassion to truly see and feel God.
Prayer
Jesus, thank you for this wonderful
message. Thank you for allowing us
to believe that we can all take part in a
personal connection with God through
your example of love and compassion.
Help us to live in the Way you taught.
Luke 9:18-24
Once when Jesus was praying alone,
with only the disciples near him, he
asked them, “Who do the crowds say
that I am?” They answered, “John
the Baptist; but others, Elïjah; and still
others, that one of the ancient prophets
has arisen.” He said to them, “But who
do you say that I am?” Peter answered,
“The Messiah of God.” He sternly
ordered and commanded them not to tell
anyone, saying, “The Son of Man must
undergo great suffering, and be rejected
by the elders, chief priests, and scribes,
and be killed, and on the third day be
raised Then he said to them all, “If any
want to become my followers, let them
deny themselves and take up their cross
daily and follow me. For those who
want to save their life will lose it, and
those who lose their life for my sake will
save it. What does it profit them if they
gain the whole world, but lose or forfeit
themselves? Those who are ashamed of
me and of my words, of them the Son of
Man will be ashamed when he comes
in his glory and the glory of the Father
and of the holy angels. But truly I tell
you, there are some standing here who
will not taste death before they see the
kingdom of God.”
Reflection
Consider the ‘life’ that was destined for
most of the disciples. Their position in
society was generally guaranteed by
their birth. They were urged to give up
this view of life and to take up a new life
that centred on the truths of compassion
and love. Can we do the same? Are our
lives focussed on status or wealth, or on
something more permanent?
Luke 10:25-37
Wanting to justify himself, a lawyer
asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
Jesus replied, “A man was going down
from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into
the hands of robbers, who stripped him,
beat him, and went away, leaving him
half dead. Now by chance a priest was
going down that road; and when he saw
him, he passed by on the other side.
So likewise a Lëvïte, when he came to
the place and saw him, passed by on
the other side. But a Samäritan while
traveling came near him; and when he
saw him, he was moved with pity. He
went to him and bandaged his wounds,
having poured oil and wine on them.
Then he put him on his own animal,
brought him to an inn, and took care
of him. The next day he took out two
denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and
said, Take care of him; and when I come
back, I will repay you whatever more
you spend. Which of these three, do you
think, was a neighbor to the man who fell
into the hands of the robbers?” He said,
“The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus
said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
Reflection
In one of Jesus’ most well-known
stories, we have two very important
religious men neglecting to help a man
in desperate need, but a despised outcast
doing the right thing. There is nothing
in the law to encourage the priest or the
Levite to help, so they do nothing; but
the Samaritan, without all the religious
knowledge of the others, knows in his
heart what to do and acts with love and
compassion. Jesus is telling someone
who is looking for loopholes in the law
that when push comes to shove you do
the right thing, regardless.
Prayer
God, help us not get caught up with
technicalities: but to know what is
right and act on it. Give us the wisdom
to realise that our neighbour is all of
humanity, and the courage do what
is needed when our neighbour is in
desperate need.
Amen.
Luke 10:38-42
Now as they went on their way, he
entered a certain village, where a
woman named Martha welcomed him
into her home. She had a sister named
Mary, who sat at the Lords feet and
listened to what he was saying. But
Martha was distracted by her many
tasks; so she came to him and asked,
“Lord, do you not care that my sister
has left me to do all the work by myself?
Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord
answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are
worried and distracted by many things;
there is need of only one thing. Mary
has chosen the better part, which will
not be taken away from her.”
Reflection
We are told to work hard and fulfil
our duties, as a student, this means
homework; assignments; extra-curricular
activities, like sport or band practice;
and our obligations to our parents at
home as well. Later, you will have work
and new family activities to fulfil. All of
these are important. But Jesus reminds
us here that if we get too caught up in
our worldly duties, we risk neglecting
our spiritual ones. When it is time to sit
and reflect and listen to what Jesus is
saying, whether that’s at Mass or quietly
reading some scripture in our bedroom,
it’s time to put those other things aside
for a while: of all our duties, loving God
comes first.
Prayer
Jesus, let me sit at your feet, like Mary
did, and listen to your message. Help
me know when it is time. Let your path
be open to me, this better path. Let not
the worries of the world engulf me. Let
me be there for you, like you are always
there for me.
Amen.
He was praying in a certain place,
and after he had finished, one of his
He said to them, “When you pray, say:
Father, hallowed be your name. Your
kingdom come. Give us each day our
daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for
we ourselves forgive everyone indebted
to us. And do not bring us to the time
of trial.”
Reflection
Education is an important part of
the Catholic tradition. This week we
celebrate the feast of St Ignatius who
founded the Jesuits, a religious order
dedicated to learning and teaching.
Was your school founded by a religious
order? Who founded that order? What
are the good things about your school?
How does your school, its students
and teachers, reflect the kindness and
compassion of Christ? Ask, how can I
contribute to that vision?
Prayer
O merciful One, lead us with bonds of
human kindness. Show us your love
that we may be at peace with ourselves
Luke 12:13-21
Someone in the crowd said to him,
“Teacher, tell my brother to divide the
family in-heritance with me.” But he
said to him, “Friend, who set me to be
a judge or arbitrator over you?” And
he said to them, “Take care! Be on
your guard against all kinds of greed;
for ones life does not consist in the
abundance of possessions.” Then he
told them a parable: “The land of a
rich man produced abundantly. And he
thought to himself, What should I do,
for I have no place to store my crops?
Then he said, EI will do this: I will pull
down my barns and build larger ones,
and there I will store all my grain and
my goods. And I will say to my soul,
Soul, you have ample goods laid up for
many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.
But God said to him, You fool! This very
night your life is being demanded of
you. And the things you have prepared,
whose will they be? So it is with those
who store up treasures for themselves
but are not rich toward God.”
Reflection
Jesus’ Transfiguration provided Peter,
James and John with an insight into
who Jesus really was. We reflect
on Jesus’ qualities of love and
compassion, of his willingness to
forgive. Australia’s first saint, Mary
MacKillop, reflected those qualities in
her care for children and the poor in
our land. Who is continuing that work
in Australia today? How can I follow in
Mary’s footsteps and help Australia to be
transfigured into a truly fair place where
all young people have the opportunity to
reach their potential?
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is
your Fathers good pleasure to give you
the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and
give alms. Make purses for yourselves
that do not wear out, an unfailing
treasure in heaven, where no thief
comes near and no moth destroys. For
where your treasure is, there your heart
will be also. “Be dressed for action and
have your lamps lit; be like those who
are waiting for their master to return from
the wedding banquet, so that they may
open the door for him as soon as he
comes and knocks. Blessed are those
slaves whom the master finds alert when
he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten
and he will come and serve them. If he
near dawn, and finds them so, blessed
Reflection
This week we reflect on how special
Mary is. The feast of the Assumption
reminds us that over the centuries Mary
has had a special place in the hearts
of Catholics. On this feast we celebrate
how her life became bound up with
the life of her son, Jesus. We celebrate
Jesus’ love for her, both on earth and
in heaven. What do I pray to Mary
about? How can Mary’s acceptance of
her role in life inspire me to do great
things? What great things would I like
to achieve?
Jesus went through one town and
made his way to Jerusalem. Someone
asked him, “Lord, will only a few be
saved?” He said to them, “Strive to enter
through the narrow door; for many, I
tell you, will try to enter and will not
be able. When once the owner of the
house has got up and shut the door,
and you begin to stand outside and to
knock at the door, saying, Lord, open to
us, then in reply he will say to you, I do
not know where you come from. Then
you will begin to say, We ate and drank
with you, and you taught in our streets.
But he will say, I do not know where
you come from; go away from me, all
you evildoers! There will be weeping
and gnashing of teeth when you see
Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all
the prophets in the kingdom of God,
and you yourselves thrown out. Then
people will come from east and west,
from north and south, and will eat in the
who will be first, and some are first who
Reflection
Many people suffer and mourn
Our Christian faith is in a God who
cares. Jesus’ sufferings mean that he
understands how ordinary people feel.
Who do I know who is having a hard
time? What grace can I pray for to help
those people? How can I help those
nearest to me in times of suffering and
When Jesus noticed how guests chose
the places of honor, he told them,
“When you are invited by someone to a
wedding banquet, do not sit down at the
place of honor, in case someone more
distinguished than you has been invited
by your host; and the host who invited
both of you may come and say to you,
‘Give this person your place,’ and then
in disgrace you would start to take the
lowest place. But when you are invited,
go and sit down at the lowest place, so
that when your host comes, he may say
to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; then you
will be honored in the presence of all who
sit at the table with you. For all who exalt
themselves will be humbled, and those
who humble themselves will be exalted.”
And, “When you give a luncheon or
a dinner, do not invite your friends or
your brothers or your relatives or rich
neighbors, in case they may invite you
in return, and you would be repaid. But
when you give a banquet, invite the poor,
the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And
you will be blessed, because they cannot
repay you, for you will be repaid at the
resurrection of the righteous.”
Reflection
To be humble does not mean we have to
put ourselves down and make ourselves
feel miserable. Jesus loves us and
wants us to feel good about ourselves
and our achievements, but he doesn’t
want us to be self-absorbed, worried
about what people think of us or how
we look or what social group we’re in:
then we forget about others—particularly
those less fortunate. It is up to God to
exalt us. What can we do to be more
humble? At school? At home?
Prayer
Jesus, help me be a good guest at your
banquet, where I shall wait for your
loving call. Jesus, let me learn by your
example; let me be a gracious host at
my own table. Let those come to my
table that need me, not those
I think I need.
Amen.
Luke 14:25-33
Now large crowds were traveling with
him; Jesus said to them, “Whoever
comes to me and does not hate father
and mother, wife and children, brothers
and sisters, yes, and even life itself,
cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not
carry the cross and follow me cannot be
my disciple. For which of you, intending
to build a tower, does not first sit down
and estimate the cost, to see whether he
has enough to complete it? Otherwise,
when he has laid a foundation and is not
able to finish, all who see it will begin to
ridicule him, saying, This fellow began
to build and was not able to finish. Or
what king, going out to wage war against
another king, will not sit down first and
consider whether he is able with ten
thousand to oppose the one who comes
against him with twenty thousand? If he
cannot, then, while the other is still far
away, he sends a delegation and asks
for the terms of peace. So therefore, none
of you can become my disciple if you do
not give up all your possessions.”
Reflection
The language of Jesus’ time used stark
contrasts when comparing things: to
‘love’ one thing meant to ‘hate’ the other,
where we would say that one is more
important than the other. Many families
of the early Christians would have been
against their children following Jesus,
wanting them to stick with the old ways.
Jesus needed to test the commitment
of the ‘large crowds’: he was gaining a
celebrity status. He needed to explain
that being a Christian is not easy: God
comes first. He didn’t want ‘fair-weather
fans’, because he knew about the
trouble ahead. Has your faith in Jesus
ever been tested? How? And how did
you respond?
Prayer
Jesus, you endured so much for us,
you were crucified so that we might
be redeemed. Give us the strength to
endure suffering, to hold firm in our faith
when we are tested. Help me let go of
those worldly things that matter not, and
carry your cross with you.
Amen.
Luke 15:1-32
Jesus said, “Which one of you, having
a hundred sheep and losing one of
them, does not leave the ninety-nine in
the wilderness and go after the one that
is lost until he finds it? When he has
found it, he lays it on his shoulders and
rejoices. And when he comes home, he
calls together his friends and neighbors,
saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for
I have found my sheep that was lost.’
Just so, I tell you, there will be more
joy in heaven over one sinner who
repents than over ninety-nine righteous
persons who need no repentance. Or
what woman having ten silver coins, if
she loses one of them, does not light
a lamp, sweep the house, and search
carefully until she finds it? When she
has found it, she calls together her
friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice
with me, for I have found the coin that
I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is
joy in the presence of the angels of God
over one sinner who repents.”
Reflection
Just like with the story of the Prodigal
Son, Jesus is trying to give us a sense
of how it is for God when we stray
away from him, do the wrong thing,
but then find it in our hearts to repent
and return. That feeling when you find
that missing iPhone behind the bed,
or that USB back up of the important
assignment due tomorrow, or that
necklace you were given on your
birthday by your grandmother. That rush
of joy! Remember the feeling? Did you
tell all your friends? Did you share your
joy and relief, in person? On Facebook?
Via SMS? Think about how much more
important your soul is for all eternity,
and magnify that feeling accordingly…
What must that be like for the hosts of
Heaven?
Prayer
Loving Jesus, we thank you for our
chance at repentance. Help us not to
stray away from you, but when we do,
give us the courage and the insight to
realise what we have done, and return
to God.
Amen.
Luke 16: 1-13
Jesus said, “There was a rich man who
had a manager, who was squandering
his property. So he asked to see the
accounts, and said he would fire the
manager. The manager decided to
reduce the amounts of money all the
rich man’s debtors owed, so that they
would look more favourably upon him
once he was out of work. When the
rich man found out, he commended
the dishonest manager because he
had acted shrewdly; for the children of
this age are more shrewd in dealing
with their own generation than are the
children of light. And I tell you, make
friends for yourselves by means of
dishonest wealth so that when it is gone,
they may welcome you into the eternal
homes. Whoever is faithful in a very little
is faithful also in much; and whoever
is dishonest in a very little is dishonest
also in much. If then you have not been
faithful with the dishonest wealth, who
will entrust to you the true riches? And
if you have not been faithful with what
belongs to another, who will give you
what is your own? No slave can serve
two masters; for a slave will either hate
the one and love the other, or be devoted
to the one and despise the other. You
cannot serve God and wealth.”
Reflection
Sometimes, Jesus used humour and
irony to engage his audience before
he got to the real message. This story
makes a joke out of commercial
practices of the time period, but Jesus
quickly brings us to a point that is as
valid today as it was then: if you try to
be the servant of, and be faithful to, both
money AND God, you will eventually
fail. Are their ways that you could reduce
your need for more possessions and put
more energy into God’s work? What do
you really need?
Prayer
Teach me, O Lord, how to live more
simply: make me strong in the face of
greed; make me wise in the face of desire;
show me the path in the face of doubt.
Luke 17:11-19
On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was
going through the region between
Samäria and Galilee. As he entered a
village, ten lepers approached him.
Keeping their distance, they called out,
saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy
on us!” When he saw them, he said to
them, “Go and show yourselves to the
priests.” And as they went, they were
made clean. Then one of them, when
he saw that he was healed, turned
back, praising God with a loud voice.
He prostrated himself at Jesus‘ feet and
thanked him. And he was a Samäritan.
Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made
clean? But the other nine, where are
they? Was none of them found to return
and give praise to God except this
foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Get
up and go on your way; your faith has
made you well.”
Reflection
Have you ever been approached by a
leper? Maybe not in a literal sense, but
someone who is shunned by most of the
people in your society? Someone with
social leprosy? What did you do? The
Samaritan leper had both kinds. He was
healed of the physical disease, but the
wider community around him would still
shun him as a Samaritan, someone to
be viewed with disgust and suspicion in
a social sense. And yet, he is the only
one who went out of his way to thank
God, while the other nine perhaps felt,
as ‘proper’ members of society, that
they were entitled to be healed. They
all called out for mercy, and Jesus
had them healed through God’s love,
but nine were unable to learn the real
lesson. They only allowed God to touch
them skin-deep, superficially; whereas
the Samaritan allowed himself to be
touched right to the heart.
Luke 18:1-8
Then Jesus told them a parable about
their need to pray always and not to lose
heart. He said, “In a certain city there
was a judge who neither feared God nor
had respect for people. In that city there
was a widow who kept coming to him
and saying, Grant me justice against
my opponent. For a while he refused;
but later he said to himself, Though I
have no fear of God and no respect for
anyone, yet because this widow keeps
bothering me, I will grant her justice,
so that she may not wear me out by
continually coming.” And the Lord said,
“Listen to what the unjust judge says.
And will not God grant justice to his
chosen ones who cry to him day and
night? Will he delay long in helping
them? I tell you, he will quickly grant
justice to them. And yet, when the Son of
Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
Reflection
Why would the writer tell us what
this story is about before it starts?
Sometimes, Jesus likes to ‘warm up’ his
audience, like a comedian. The original
words translated into modern English
as ‘bothering me’ and ‘wear me out’
have martial meanings too. The idea
that a widow (a woman without a man
in this society had very little power)
could be giving an all-powerful and
corrupt judge such trouble for his lack
of respect for people would have been
an attractive and humorous image for
Jesus’ audience, and certainly would
have got their attention. Persistence
is important, and God is a just judge,
unlike this earthly one. When we come
to God, we get justice; but read the last
sentence. What will we do when Jesus
comes to us?
Prayer
God, you are my judge, a merciful one,
the designer and the maker of justice so
that we are all in your hands. I think you
for your love. Grant me my prayers, and
help me to want only what I need from
you, and give to you everything I can.
Amen.
Luke 18:9-14
He also told this parable to some who
trusted in themselves that they were
righteous and regarded others with
contempt: “Two men went up to the
temple to pray, one a Pharisee and
the other a tax collector. The Pharisee,
standing by himself, was praying thus,
God, I thank you that I am not like other
people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or
even like this tax collector. I fast twice a
week; I give a tenth of all my income.
But the tax collector, standing far off,
would not even look up to heaven, but
was beating his breast and saying,
God, be merciful to me, a sinner! I tell
you, this man went down to his home
justified rather than the other; for all who
exalt themselves will be humbled, but all
who humble themselves will be exalted.”
Reflection
In this Sunday’s Gospel we met a tax
collector (like we do next week) and in
both cases they are people who have a
grounding in what it means to be human.
In this week’s parable, he is contrasted
with the Pharisee. It can be easy to think
that the Pharisee’s life describes what
we refer to as being a “holy person”,
someone who does the “religious stuff”
in a big way which in turn gives us a
perception of how we should be. But
the tax collector gives a different version
of holiness. He identifies how we get
it wrong at times. We don’t do the
religious in a big way maybe not even in
a small way. Yet here is someone who
acknowledges his sinfulness and comes
humbly before God. To be holy requires
one to accept God into their life and this
requires an acknowledgement that we
need God to help us through the mess of
life. The Beatitudes of Matthew’s Gospel
refers to a way of holiness, “Blessed are
the poor in Spirit.”
Prayer
Loving God, help me to find you in my
daily life. May I know of your love in not
just the good times but in the difficult.
We make this prayer through Christ
our Lord.
Amen.
Luke 19: 1-10
Jesus entered Jericho and was passing
through it. A man was there named
Zacchaëus; he was a chief tax collector
and was rich. He was trying to see
who Jesus was, but on account of the
crowd he could not, because he was
short in stature. So he ran ahead and
climbed a sycamore tree to see him.
When Jesus came to the place, he
looked up and said to him, “Zacchaëus,
hurry and come down; for I must stay
at your house today.” So he hurried
down and was happy to welcome him.
All who saw it began to grumble and
said, “He has gone to be the guest of
one who is a sinner.” Zacchaëus stood
there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of
my possessions, Lord, I will give to the
poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of
anything, I will pay back four times as
much.” Then Jesus said to him, “Today
salvation has come to this house,
because he too is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man came to seek out
and to save the lost.”
Reflection
This is a story of reconciliation of the
sinner. Zacchaeus was wealthy, but he
was unpopular because of the way he
had obtained his wealth. Unable to see
Jesus, he climbs a Sycamore tree, a
symbol of strength and divinity in Israel.
In what ways are our lives similar? Are
we searching for happiness in ways that
fail to satisfy our spiritual core? Faith
in Jesus is an invitation to step back
from material happiness and towards
a way of life that brings fulfilment. But,
like Zacchaeus, we often cannot find
Jesus on our own. The Church is our
sycamore tree. It is the pathway to
encountering a fulfilment in life that only
Jesus can provide.
Prayer
Lord God, help me to renounce the
ways of life which take me away from
you. Bless all those who find strength
in the Church. May all people find their
spiritual core. We make this prayer
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Some Sadducees asked, “Teacher,
Moses wrote for us that if a mans brother
dies, leaving a wife but no children, the
man shall marry the widow and raise up
children for his brother. Now there were
seven brothers; the first married, and
died childless; then the second and the
third married her, and so in the same
way all seven died childless. Finally the
woman also died. In the resurrection,
therefore, whose wife will the woman be?
For the seven had married her.” Jesus
said to them, “Those who belong to this
age marry and are given in marriage; but
those who are considered worthy of a
place in that age and in the resurrection
from the dead neither marry nor are
given in marriage. Indeed they cannot
die anymore, because they are like
angels and are children of God, being
children of the resurrection. And the fact
that the dead are raised Moses himself
showed, in the story about the bush,
where he speaks of the Lord as the God
of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the
God of Jacob. Now he is God not of the
dead, but of the living; for to him all of
them are alive.”
Reflection
The Sadducees was a group who did not
believe in resurrection, so they presented
a story of the afterlife using worldly
ideas in order to disprove it. However,
resurrection involves transformation. We
don’t know what our resurrected ‘bodies’
will be like, but the scriptures tell us that
we will be transformed in ways that we
can barely imagine or comprehend. That
is Jesus’ point to the Sadducees. God
is a God of the living. Let us be mindful
of those who have gone before us. May
their lives inspire us to be transformed
into people of love.
Prayer
In silence, let us pray for those we love
whom have died. For the innocent who
lost their lives years before their time.
For those who through serious illness
are close to death.
Amen.
Luke 21:5-19
Some people were admiring the temple,
and Jesus told them that one day it would
all be destroyed. They wanted to know
more, so Jesus said, “Beware that you
are not led astray; for many will come
in my name and say, I am he! and, The
time is near! Do not go after them. When
you hear of wars and insurrections, do
not be terrified; for these things must take
place first, but the end will not follow
immediately.Nation will rise against
nation, and kingdom against kingdom;
there will be great earthquakes, and in
various places famines and plagues;
and there will be dreadful portents and
great signs from heaven. But before
all this occurs, they will arrest you and
persecute you; they will hand you over
to synagogues and prisons, and you will
be brought before kings and governors
because of my name. This will give you
an opportunity to testify. So make up
your minds not to prepare your defense
in advance; for I will give you words and
a wisdom that none of your opponents
will be able to withstand or contradict.
You will be betrayed even by parents and
brothers, by relatives and friends; and
they will put some of you to death. You
will be hated by all because of my name.
But not a hair of your head will perish. By
your endurance you will gain your souls.”
Reflection
In this gospel reading, Jesus does
not paint a pleasant vision of the
future. The temple was destroyed by
the Romans soon after his death. The
church communities established by Paul
also were under threat of persecution.
Jesus urges all to keep the faith. We are
hopeful our world will be at peace. Yet
our faith will be challenged. Secularism,
consumerism, greed and hate will
attempt to undermine our faith in
Jesus. Likewise we should heed Jesus’
message: to keep the faith.
Prayer
Strengthen my faith O God, so that I may
face the challenges which confront me.
Lead me not into temptation. Our Father
who art in heaven …
Luke 23:35-43
And the people stood by, watching; but
the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He
saved others; let him save himself if
he is the Messiah of God, his chosen
one!” The soldiers also mocked him,
coming up and offering him sour wine,
and saying, “If you are the King of the
Jews, save yourself!” There was also an
inscription over him, “This is the King
of the Jews.” One of the criminals who
were hanged there kept deriding him
and saying, “Are you not the Messiah?
Save yourself and us!” But the other
rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear
God, since you are under the same
sentence of condemnation? And we
indeed have been condemned justly, for
we are getting what we deserve for our
deeds, but this man has done nothing
wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember
me when you come into your kingdom.”
He replied, “Truly I tell you, today you
will be with me in Paradise.”
Reflection
At the top of a crucifix are the letters INRI.
They translate to Jesus of Nazareth King
of the Jews. This Sunday we recognise
the Kingship of Jesus, however not in
earthly terms. The kingdom of Jesus
is not about power but truth and life.
It focuses upon holiness and grace. It
strives to bring justice, love and peace to
the world. In our world there are people
who continue to build the kingdom in
their daily lives. Are you one?
Prayer
God, we pray that our actions may
further bring about justice, love and
peace. We pray for organisations like St
Vincent de Paul Society, Caritas, Catholic
Missions and other aid organisations.
May their work continue to transform our
world. We pray that people will foster a
greater sense of charity. We make this
prayer through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Matthew 24:37-44
For as the days of Noah were, so will
be the coming of the Son of Man. For
as in those days before the flood they
were eating and drinking, marrying and
giving in marriage, until the day Noah
entered the ark, and they knew nothing
until the flood came and swept them
all away, so too will be the coming of
the Son of Man. Then two will be in the
field; one will be taken and one will
be left. Two women will be grinding
meal together; one will be taken and
one will be left. Keep awake therefore,
for you do not know on what day your
Lord is coming. But understand this:
if the owner of the house had known
in what part of the night the thief was
coming, he would have stayed awake
and would not have let his house be
broken into. Therefore you also must be
ready, for the Son of Man is coming at
an unexpected hour.
Reflection
We have now entered the season of
Advent. The readings of the next 4 weeks
have a dual theme. They assist us to
prepare for the birth of Jesus as well as
acknowledge that he will return at the
end of time. This week’s gospel focuses
on being alert. How alert are you to the
ways of Jesus? If we are to welcome
Jesus into our lives at Christmas we
must be awake to the opportunities of
living the Gospel everyday.
Prayer
Father you gave us Jesus, your Son to
be our companion and guide. Help us to
be willing to accept Jesus into our lives,
just as Mary did. Hail Mary full
of grace...
Amen.
Matthew 3:1-12
In those days John the Baptist appeared
in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming,
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven
has come near.” This is the one of
whom the prophet Ïsäi ah spoke when
he said, ‘The voice of one crying out
in the wilderness: Prepare the way of
the Lord, make his paths straight.’ The
people were baptized by him in the river
Jordan, confessing their sins. But when
he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees
coming for baptism, he said to them,
“You brood of vipers! Who warned you
to flee from the wrath to come? Bear
fruit worthy of repentance. Do not
presume to say to yourselves, ‘We Have
Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you,
God is able from these stones to raise
up children to Abraham. Every tree that
does not bear good fruit will be cut
down and thrown into the fire. I baptize
you with water for repentance, but one
who is more powerful than I is coming
after me; I am not worthy to carry his
sandals. He will baptize you with the
Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork
is in his hand, and he will clear his
threshing floor and will gather his wheat
into the granary; but the chaff he will
burn with unquenchable fire.”
Reflection
Our Advent season reminds us that
Christmas is about the presence not
presents. John the Baptist was aware
of the coming presence of Jesus and
the need for all to repent so he could be
received. How are we preparing for the
coming of Jesus? Do we give people our
full presence or do we detach ourselves
by holding onto other matters (Social
Media and mobile phones, to name
two). Would you be prepared to set
aside these for some time each day
so that you may be present to yourself
and others?
Prayer
Loving God, Elijah found you in the
gentleness of a breeze. Teach me to
be still and know of your presence in
my life. I make this prayer through the
intercession of Jesus Christ.
Amen.
