an $11 million, 48,000 square foot maternity
center, featuring 23 private suites for you and
your newborn. Each suite is elegantly designed
creating a comfortable, spa-like setting. Saint

Guidance from Maternity Educators
At Saint Clare’s, we understand many families
look to us to provide guidance and answer
questions during their path to parenthood. We
are pleased to serve as your advisor by offering
the supervision of dedicated Maternity Educators,
specially trained Registered Nurses (RNs), who will
assist you in making arrangements for childbirth,
keep you informed of classes provided by Saint
Clare’s and coordinate any needs you may have.
While the staff at Saint Clare’s is accomplished
and acutely capable they also pride themselves
in having the compassion and caring to go the
extra mile to make your birthing experience

State-of-the-art facility
with advanced medical systems
In 2005, Kate M. Tiedemann made a $5 million gift
toward the renovation of Saint Clare’s maternity
center. In recognition of this gift, the maternity
center was named the Katena Center for Mother
and Child as a tribute to Ms. Tiedemann’s
employees at Katena Products, Inc.
The nursery at the Katena Center for Mother
and Child at Saint Clare’s is surrounded by large
windows for a constant view of your newborn and
features the latest equipment and technology to
ensure the best care for your baby. Our specialized
nursery provides complete nursing care or, if you
prefer, you can choose to have your baby with you
all or part of your stay at Saint Clare’s.
Advanced, acute care, for babies born premature
or with health problems, is provided in our Level
II Intermediate Care Nursery. This state-of-the-art
nursery is equipped with new monitoring and
charting systems. Our staff of specialized, boardcertified
neonatologists is on-hand to meet the
unique requirements of these newborns. The Level
II Intermediate Care Nursery is also equipped with
private rooms for breastfeeding and spending
time with your child. A separate family waiting
area is available.

During your stay at the Katena Center for Mother and Child,
you will recover in one of our 23 completely private suites.
Spa-like private suites
and customized accommodations
The Katena Center at Saint Clare’s private recovery
suites have been designed to create a comfortable,
home-like setting for families. Each suite has been
carefully designed with a décor of rich woods, new
furnishings, soothing, earth-tone colors and subtle
lighting. All private suites offer pull-out beds for
overnight guests, comfortable rocking chairs, TVs,
DVDs and high-speed Internet to accommodate
your needs. Every suite has its own private,
beautifully appointed tile bath with shower and hair
dryer. The comfortable, spa-like environment allows
you to enjoy your time with your new arrival in a
warm, cozy setting. You are encouraged to make
an appointment to have prenatal or postpartum
massage during your visit to the Katena Center.

Clare’s Center for Complementary Medicine.
The Katena Center for Mother and Child at Saint
Clare’s takes the need for your rest and recovery
seriously. Well-rested mothers heal better,
experience less postpartum depression, have more
success with breastfeeding and are better able
to handle the changes a newborn brings. Each
afternoon, Saint Clare’s designates quiet time
from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Katena Center for Mother
and Child. We limit interruptions by staff during
this time, unless you request our attention or need
medical care. Accommodations can be made for
your visitors during this quiet time, just let a staff
member know.

Saint Clare’s Health System maintains a comprehensive,
multi-disciplinary education and support program.
Our commitment to you and your family
goes beyond delivering your baby
Classes are offered through all stages of pregnancy
and parenthood and cover varied topics from preconception
to emergency care. Your whole family
will be supported by classes to prepare for and
welcome your new addition, including your baby’s
siblings and grandparents. We even have a class
to help introduce your newborn to your family
pet! Our classes are taught by registered nurses
specially trained in childbirth education and in all
areas of pre- and postnatal care. Classes include

Prepared Childbirth
This comprehensive course for
first-time parents helps prepare
you for pregnancy, birth, recovery
and caring for your newborn.
Topics include the stages of
labor, pain relief (including epidurals), relaxation
and breathing techniques, pushing techniques,
methods of delivery, hospital procedures,
unplanned C-sections, postpartum adjustment,
newborn care, feeding and safety. A tour of Saint
Clare’s Katena Center for Mother and Child is
included. Classes are offered on weeknights or on
Saturdays. Please call early to register for the class
of your choice. Spanish classes are also available.

Lamaze Refresher
Especially for expectant parents
who previously completed a
prepared childbirth course,

childbirth, and creates a supportive environment
for couples to share their previous birth

changes occurring prior to labor, stages of labor,
back pain and remedies, pain relief (including

Adoptive Parenting
Designed for adoptive parents,

on newborn appearance, baby

Breastfeeding
In this two-hour class, our lactation
consultant provides the advice and
confidence you’ll need to successfully
breastfeed your baby. Topics include

positioning your baby, preventing problems,
breast pumps, pumping and storing your milk,
working moms and breastfeeding, nutritional needs,
and weaning information.

Sibling Introduction
Sometimes siblings do not share
their parent’s excitement about
their new baby. This Saturday
morning program helps to prepare
youngsters, ages 3 - 8, for the
arrival of their new brother or sister. Parents learn

hurt feelings. A movie, story and lively exchange of
questions and answers are included.

This class introduces soon-to-be

hospital childbirth procedures,

Infant Emergency Care
Designed specifically for new
parents, grandparents and the
caregivers of infants under age
one, this four-hour course identifies
potential hazards in the home,
provides appropriate safety measures, and
teaches you to recognize infant cardiac arrest and
respiratory difficulties. Call Saint Clare’s Training

Additional support provided
by Saint Clare’s Health System
In cooperation with Saint Clare’s Behavioral Health
Services, our Maternity Department provides a
full complement of crisis intervention, assessment,
counseling and self-help group support for women
suffering from depression after childbirth. Support
groups and programs are available through referral
by the New Jersey Self Help Group Clearinghouse.
Infant Massage
Learning specific massage
techniques is a unique opportunity
to build a strong bond with your
children. Infant massage has been
proven to calm anxious babies,
improve sleep, relieve gas, encourage parent-child
communication, relieve symptoms of colic, and
ease discomforts of teething. Call the Center for

and Child Orientation and Tours
For more information on orientation or to schedule
a tour of the Katena Center for Mother and Child,
please call Saint Clare’s Maternity Educator at (973)
625-6387. Our Maternity Educator can answer
questions such as; Are there preadmission papers
to fill out? What should I bring with me? Where do I
park? Can my baby stay in my room with me? How
long will I stay in the hospital?
Massage Services
Saint Clare’s is pleased to offer
massage services for maternity
patients. Mothers-to-be can
arrange for prenatal or postpartum
massages to relax and ease the
physical stress of carrying a baby and childbirth.
Massage also facilitates postpartum structural
realignment. New dads are also encouraged to
partake in a massage to relieve stress, muscle
soreness and aches and pains providing needed
care for dads. Family members and friends can
purchase a massage as a gift for both parents.
