➠ ➠ EWEA released its 2009 offshore wind statistics: 54% more capacity had been installed<br />

than in 2008, reaching 2,056 MW.<br />

February<br />

➠➠EWEA released its overall 2009 statistics: more wind <strong>energy</strong> capacity was installed<br />

than any o<strong>the</strong>r power-generating technology in <strong>the</strong> EU, reaching 74,767 MW.<br />

➠➠EWEA’s analysis of <strong>the</strong> National Renewable Energy Action Plans showed <strong>the</strong> EU should<br />

slightly exceed <strong>the</strong> 20% target by 2020.<br />

March<br />

➠➠The European Commission published its ‘2020 strategy’, committing to complete<br />

<strong>the</strong> internal <strong>energy</strong> market, upgrade <strong>the</strong> grid and implement <strong>the</strong> SET-Plan.<br />

➠➠The Commission allocated over €903 million to electricity interconnection projects<br />

within <strong>the</strong> European Economic Recovery Plan.<br />

➠ ➠ EWEA welcomed both steps.<br />

April<br />

➠➠EREC published a 100% renewable <strong>energy</strong> vision for <strong>the</strong> EU in 2050, supported<br />

by EWEA.<br />

➠ ➠ EWEC took place in Warsaw. The industry declared wind <strong>energy</strong> would meet 50% of<br />

EU electricity demand in 2050. EWEA published ‘Wind Energy and Electricity Prices’,<br />

showing wind can reduce power prices. The ‘Breath of Fresh Air’ campaign and<br />

EWEA’s blog were launched.
