Hirsutism & Virilization

a) The fundamental pathophysiologic defect is
not known.
b) Increased production of androgens may
result from:
• Increased secretion of luteinizing hormone
(LH) from the anterior pituitary, leading to
increased ovarian androgne production.
• Insulin resistance and compensatory
hyperinsulinemia, stimulate ovarian and
adrenal androgen production by direct and
indirect mechanisms.
