1963 Merging the park <strong>and</strong> wildlife agencies, the Legislature creates the<br />

<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Parks</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Wildlife</strong> Department, overseen by a three-member<br />

<strong>Commission</strong>.<br />

1967 The Legislature authorizes $75 million in revenue bonds for<br />

acquisition <strong>and</strong> development of state parks.<br />

1971 The Legislature dedicates a one-cent cigarette tax to state parks.<br />

1979 The Legislature dedicates a second one-cent cigarette tax to<br />

development of local parks through grants overseen by TPWD.<br />

1983 The Legislature transfers remaining authority to regulate fi sh <strong>and</strong><br />

wildlife from counties to TPWD.<br />

1988 TPWD purchases 215,000 acres for the Big Bend Ranch State Park,<br />

doubling the size of the state park system.<br />

2001 The Legislature passes <strong>Sunset</strong> legislation that requires TPWD to<br />

create the L<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Water Resources Conservation <strong>and</strong> Recreation<br />

Department. The Governor appoints members to serve six-year terms <strong>and</strong><br />

selects the presiding officer. State law instructs the Governor, in making<br />

appointments to the <strong>Commission</strong>,<br />

to attempt to include persons with<br />

<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Parks</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Wildlife</strong> <strong>Commission</strong><br />

expertise in historic preservation,<br />

conservation, <strong>and</strong> outdoor recreation.<br />
