Austin ISD
STAAR is a more rigorous standardized
testing program that will replace the
Texas Assessment of Knowledge and
Skills (TAKS).
STAAR program emphasizes “readiness”
standards, which are the knowledge and
skills that are considered most important
for success in the grade or subject that
follows and for college and career.
Students first entering ninth grade in the 2011–2012 school year
will notice the biggest difference in the new testing program.
If a student is enrolled in grade 8 or below and is taking a course
for which there is a STAAR EOC assessment, that student will be
required to take the applicable STAAR EOC test.
The TAKS test will be replaced with 12 (15 since Reading and
Writing are tested separately)end-of-course (EOC) assessments,
which students will take as they complete the corresponding course.
There will be a four-hour time limit to complete the test unless the
student obtains a special exception.
The 12 EOC assessments are:
English I, English II, English III
Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II
Biology, Chemistry, Physics
World Geography, World History, and U.S.
History
Because the EOC must be included as
15% of a student’s course grade, the
district approved the policy to move from
awarding partial credit at the end of a
semester to awarding full credit at the
end of the school year.
A student’s final grade and credit are
considered “pending” until EOC results
are released and the grade is calculated.
Full Credit
• Applied to year long course average
Semester
Exams
• Adjusted to weigh equally across semesters
• Six weeks grades and semester exams make up 85% of grade
• EOC accounts for remaining 15%
Conversion
Scale
• Three State assigned Performance Levels
• Converted into a value to be used for the 15 percent
calculation
A student’s score on the STAAR EOC
assessment will count 15 percent towards the
student’s final grade in that course.
Several options are being considered for
converting that score into a 15 percent value.
The campuses and community will be
provided an opportunity to provide feedback
on the options that are being considered.
After initial input and feedback from
surrounding districts and large urban
districts across the state as well as from
CACs, community members, and high
school principals, the district is
presenting four options for
consideration.

AISD: Options Proposed for Conversion
100 100
Unsatisfactory:50-69
Unsatisfactory (Met Minimum): 70
Satisfactory:80-89
Advanced: 90-100
Student’s converted score is matched from a 50-100
scale to the number of questions the student
answered correctly on each given test
The lowest converted score a student can make is
50
This conversion allows for the second widest range
of Performance Level values
This conversion would result in a different
conversion chart for every EOC test in every year
Unsatisfactory:65
Unsatisfactory (Met Minimum): 70
Satisfactory:85
Advanced: 100
The Performance Labels anchor four values for the
conversion
The scale provides a range of performance levels to
account for student’s mastery of standards and
college readiness in the final course grade.
Unsatisfactory:50
Unsatisfactory (Met Minimum): 100
Satisfactory:100
Advanced: 100
Student’s converted score anchored to the four
Performance Labels
The converted score is aligned to the cut score that
distinguishes between Level I and Level I Met
Minimum
Students who fail to meet the minimum make a 50
while students who meet or exceed the minimum
score make a 100
Unsatisfactory:69
Unsatisfactory (Met Minimum): 100
Satisfactory:100
Advanced: 100
Student’s converted score anchored to the four
Performance Labels
The converted score is aligned to the cut score that
distinguishes between Level I and Level I Met
Minimum
Students who fail to meet minimum make a 69
while students who meet or exceed the minimum
score make a 100
The district will be conducting and
online survey as well as a phone survey
that will be launched January 30.
The district STAAR website will link to
the survey.
