AN AUTUMN SPORT ROUNDUP Australian National Archery Championships 17 – 22 MARCH Australia’s best international and national archers will compete for national championship medals at the 66 th Australian National Archery Championships hosted by Tuggeranong Archery Club. The event will host open, masters and veterans categories competing in target, field and clout archery events. The target archery event showcases Australia’s Olympic and World Cup archers. Witness the spirit of cycle racing, close up and free of charge, in the championship road event for the Oceania region. Cycling Australia's 2013 Oceania Road Cycling Championships sees the region’s top road cyclists in time trial and road races for men and women competing in the under 19, under 23 and elite categories. Australian Running Festival 13 – 14 APRIL The 2013 Canberra Times Australian Running Festival includes the marathon, half marathon and the gruelling ultramarathon in a twoday event which attracts thousands of participants. In 2012, a record 5,000+ entries were received for the weekend’s events with more than 60 per cent of entrants travelling from outside Canberra. The event raised nearly $140,000 for charities. Runners can test their stamina against many of the nation’s best distance runners on a spectacular course, taking in many of Canberra’s best sights. The fun run is over five or 10 kilometres, the ultramarathon is a gruelling 50 kilometres, the marathon 42 kilometres and the half marathon is 21 kilometres. WWW.RUNNINGFESTIVAL.COM.AU Sri Chinmoy Oneness—Home Peace Run 30 APRIL – 13 AUGUST The Sri Chinmoy Oneness—Home Peace Run is history’s longest torch relay, uniting thousands of communities and millions of people in over 100 countries. In 2013, the Peace Run in Australia is dedicated to the Centenary of Canberra, bringing together a team of runners from 16 countries to cover 15,000 kilometres around the entire continent, starting and finishing in Canberra. Founded in 1987 by spiritual teacher and sports enthusiast Sri Chinmoy, the Peace Run is a dynamic expression of humanity’s longing for a more peaceful world. WWW.PEACERUN.ORG Centenary Bowls APRIL Hosted by Canberra Bowling Club, members and invited guests from bowling clubs throughout Canberra and the region will participate in a traditional 1916-style game of bowls at Canberra’s first bowling club at Forrest. Dressed in period costume, bowlers and their guests will play a game of bowls and enjoy the off-green niceties of tea and socialising. Preliminary matches will be played at all bowling clubs in the region. Participants and guests will be presented with commemorative medallions. WWW.BOWLSACT.ORG.AU Centenary themed games In 2013, sport will very much be front and centre in our celebrations, with many of our elite sporting teams helping to mark the city’s 100 th birthday milestone by hosting a special centenary-themed home game. Supporters will be encouraged to dress up for the occasion, in a spirit of celebration which will hopefully see our home town heroes victorious and finals-bound in 2013. Image: Australian Capital Tourism. 2013 Australian National Masters Rowing Championships 25 – 28 APRIL Rowing ACT is bringing Australia’s annual national masters rowing regatta to Canberra for the first time since 1964. Shortly after Lake Burley Griffin was opened in 1964, the lake’s first sporting event was the Australian Rowing Championships and the Tokyo Olympic Trials National Regatta. 2013 Access Class Asia Pacific and Australian Championships Regatta 29 MARCH – 1 APRIL To be held on Lake Burley Griffin, this international and Australian championship race series, organised by Sailability ACT, will see competition between sailors, both able-bodied and with a disability. Lake Burley Griffin is a superb sporting venue and it is fitting that a major national rowing regatta returns in Canberra’s centenary year. The Australian Masters Rowing Championships will run from Weston Park, with the organising committee ably supported by the Australian Capital Territory’s 11 rowing clubs and volunteers. LAKE BURLEY GRIFFIN WWW.ROWINGACT.ORG.AU The special feature of the Access Class Championship is that while it is expected that 80 per cent of sailors will have a disability, the competition is open to all, and competitors race on equal terms. WWW.SAILABILITY.ORG/AU/ACT Canberra Centenary Special Olympics Swimming Competition 5 – 7 APRIL This national event, organised by Special Olympics Australia, upholds the Special Olympics (SO) motto: “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt”. It will bring athletes with an intellectual disability from around Australia and our international sister cities to the Australian Institute of Sport. Featuring a Special Olympics torch run through the centre of Canberra to the personal best swimming feats by SO athletes, and a closing ceremony, the threeday competition will be open to Canberra and the world. WWW.SPECIALOLYMPICS.COM.AU 2013 ASICS Australian Little Athletics Championships 28 APRIL ACT Centenary Masters Golf tournament 8 – 12 APRIL The Centenary Masters Golf Tournament gives competitors the chance to play golf on some of Canberra’s best courses over four days. With a rest day on the Wednesday, participants and partners will have the opportunity to visit some of the capital’s great attractions. The competition is open to all golfers over 35 with an ACU Handicap. This tournament is organised by the ACT Monaro District Golf Association. WWW.ACTGOLF.COM.AU Canberra will host the Little Athletics ACT's 2013 ASICS Australian Little Athletics Championships—the showcase event for Australia’s best junior track and field athletes. Many Olympic careers have begun at this event, including Sally Pearson, Dani Samuels, Steve Hooker and Canberra’s own Lauren Boden, Zoe Buckman and Melissa Breen. For many of our local under 13 and under 15 athletes, this will be their first taste of national competition.
