By Shibu Dutta. 25th ANNIV ERSARY 25 th anniversary of the opening of Parliament House MAY – SEPTEMBER Canberra’s centenary also marks the 25 th anniversary of the opening of Parliament House on 9 May 1988. This anniversary will be marked with several special events throughout the year, and will celebrate the artists, designers and craftspeople who produced the commissioned art and craft work in Parliament House and the internal fit out and fabric of the building. Under the theme Celebrating threads of a nation, the anniversary events will also recognise the development of the building since its opening and the many ways in which this meeting place brings together the diverse threads of our nation. The 25 th anniversary will complement the 20 th anniversary celebration of the construction of the building, and the people involved. Pamille Berg Consulting has been commissioned to write and design a book, describing in text and images the commissioned art and craft work in Parliament House. Pamille joined the architectural team of Mitchell/Giurgola and Thorpe, led by Aldo Giurgola, and was central to the commissioning of the original art and craft work for the building. It is a testament to Canberra as a place to live that Aldo, Pamille and another member of the team, Hal Guida, who all originally resided in the USA, stayed on to live and work in Canberra (to this day). The book will be launched on 8 May. Artists and craftspeople featured in the book will be invited to return to Parliament House for the launch and celebration. As well, the Royal Australian Mint will release a commemorative coin for the 25 th anniversary of Parliament House in April. A Parliament House Open Day will be held on 14 September. SYMMETRIES Celebrating classical purity—in two very different forms 23 – 25 MAY The Australian Ballet A national icon is translated into dance, and virtuoso technique builds from basics to a jubilant conclusion. How do you make a ballet about Parliament House? Garry Stewart, artistic director of Australian Dance Theatre, will answer the question with Monument, his Centenary of Canberra tribute to one of Australia’s greatest monuments. Stewart, known for his far-ranging, intellectual approach to dance, worked in consultation with Parliament House lead architect Aldo Giurgola, using the design principles of the building to shape balletic movement. Mirroring the building process will be the classical showcase Etudes, which shows the growth of ballet technique from basic barre exercises to the most exuberant of bravura displays. Both works return to basic principles to show the complexity in simplicity and highlight the dancers’ versatility and pristine technique.
