So, what does the future hold for Jacksonville’s country scene?
My guess is…growth. Jacksonville’s growing population and the national increased interest
in Southern culture are setting the stage for great things to come for country music. From
adventurous new bands to an overhaul at Free Bird’s, Jacksonville is positioneded to become a
Mecca for country stars and their music. If we buy the tickets, they will come.
Country Roundup:
More and more folks want to get back to the basics of good, ole’ fashioned American fun. What
better way to accomplish that goal than with country music playing the background? You can
break the “Family Tradition” with Hank Williams, Jr. and still see “Holes in the Floor of Heaven”
with Steve Wariner, all without changing the dial on your radio.
Country music has gone through the motions and paid the dues. This genre isn’t going anywhere
but up. Because no matter what you or this great nation we live in may endure, there will always be
a country song to describe the moment in detail. And happy or sad, lyrics always sound finer when
sung with a Southern accent. Just like me, country music is American by birth and Southern by the
grace of God.
Buzz Interviews with “Crossin Dixon” & “Cole Deggs & The Lonesome.”
CROSSIN DIXON consists of Jason Miller on lead vocals, Brandon Hyde on guitar and vocals,
Charlie Grantham on guitar and vocals and Michael Bole on drums. All four members of CROSSIN
DIXON hail from the state of Mississippi.
BUZZ: Good morning. Where are you hanging out today?
Jason: Actually I am home in Mississippi.
BUZZ: We look forward to seeing you back in Jacksonville. I wanted to ask you a few quick questions. What
music do you like to listen to?
Jason: All kinds man, I grew up listening to pretty much everything. I have never really listened to a lot of
heavy metal or rap, not saying that I haven’t listened to it at all, it is just not one of my favorite things.
BUZZ: When did you know you had finally made it? Was there a defining moment?
Jason: I think the defining moment was when we were cutting our album.
BUZZ: If you could have dinner with any three people, living or dead, who would they be?
Jason: George Straight, Hank Williams Jr. and let me think about this last one….man….oh, I know, Jessica
Biel, because she’s smokin’ hot.
BUZZ: What is one thing you want to accomplish in the next 2 years.
Jason: Platinum!
BUZZ: When you are not on the road, what do you enjoy doing.
Jason: Spending time with family and friends and cutting the grass.
BUZZ: When you hit platinum are you personally going to cut your own grass?
Jason: Oh yea, that will never change.
BUZZ: How many shows a year do you typically do now?
Jason: Well, the radio tour has kind of put a damper on it, but beforehand we were averaging about 100 or
more a year, spanning clubs, fraternities and things like that.
BUZZ: What is something your other band members don’t know about you?
Jason: Huh, let me think….ah man….let me come back to that one.
BUZZ: What is your most embarrassing moment on stage?
Jason: Oh yes, we were playing a show at Rick’s Café and we had just got done doing a ballad and I am bad
about walking backwards and the drum riser was a lot closer than I thought so I took out the kick drive
backwards with both feet up in the air.
BUZZ: Do you attend your high school / college reunions?
Jason: No, we’ve played around our home town, but as far as reunions go, we haven’t been to any of those yet.
BUZZ: Have you had to adjust your lifestyle at all for the fan recognition that comes with fame?
Jason: You know, it really hasn’t gotten that bad yet because we are so new, but one thing, its getting a lot
more hectic when there are shows close to home because everyone wants to come up and talk to you.
Country: Music of Faith, Freedom,
Love & Rock-n-Roll
Continued from pg. 7
You just feel you don’t have enough time to fill them in and let them kinda understand what’s going on
because they are excited for you. They want to know because they have known you since you were nothing
and playing for 10-15 people. It is just frustrating not being able to spend more time with them.
BUZZ: Is there anything you would like to say to the Jacksonville BUZZ readers, any final notes?
Jason: You guys go out and buy the record. It is because of you that we do what we do.
Thanks for your support.
Cole Deggs & The Lonesome
BUZZ: Where are you guys at right now?
Cole: We are in Ft Wayne Indiana, we were in Nashville last night though. We have to head back after the
show to play the Grand Ole Opry.
BUZZ: Where are you from originally?
Cole: My brother and I grew up in the town Lake Jackson, Texas. It is about an hour due south of Houston
right on the coast. The other 2 brothers in the band, Jimmy and David, are from Shreveport Louisiana.
BUZZ: How did you all meet?
Cole: Jimmy and I met about 8 years ago. We had a couple mutual friends and we all met up at the bar. We
went up there and had a couple of drinks. We ended up having a tackle football game at 3 in the morning in
the lawn of my apartment complex. Then we pulled the piano out and Jimmy started playing it and it went
from there.
BUZZ: At what point did you say “We’ve made it?”
Cole: If I hear anyone say that, it’s over. I assure you we have not made it. There is so much more hard work
that comes into play than just hearing yourself on the radio.
BUZZ: Have you had to adjust your lifestyles because of the fan recognition?
Cole: Not so much. You know, this isn’t something we woke up 3 weeks ago and said lets be country singers.
This is something we have all been striving for a long time. No real lifestyle changes. The only thing that has
changed for me is being on the road a lot. We have been out pretty solid for the last 40 days from west coast
to east coast and back to the middle
BUZZ: What do you do to relax when you are on the road?
Cole: We golf, run, we all try to stay in pretty good shape…Drink…I love to fish. There is a lot of down
time. We have footballs and bicycles on the bus.
BUZZ: Are there any artists that you look up to would like to model your career after?
Cole: There are a lot of them. It is not just one. I always liked how hard Kenny Chesney has worked to get
where he is right now. He has been on the road so many years. It shows that hard work pays off if you have a
dream and put your life, soul and guts into it, it will happen.
BUZZ: Who has been your favorite person to tour with?
Cole: We haven’t been on a tour, tour, but one of the best shows we have had was to open up for Bon Jovi.
BUZZ: When you get home at night what internet sites do you pull up?
Cole: My top 3, and I am not into the computer at all, but I pull up My Space, Media Base….you know what I
am not a big browser of the internet. We have wireless on the bus, but I just don’t do it.
BUZZ: How old is everyone in the group?
Cole: I am 31, my brothers 33, Jimmy is 34, his brother is 35 and Brian is 37, I think.
BUZZ: Do you guys attend high school or college reunions?
Cole: Well, I went to college for 4 days so I don’t plan on going back to any college anytime soon. I had a ten
year awhile back and I was busy already, but for sure, I will go back to any one I can.
BUZZ: What is your most embarrassing moment on stage?
Cole: Well, I’ll be honest with you: The other night we were playing and I guess I was feeling cool and I had
most of the buttons unbuttoned on my shirt, I kinda had my little gut hanging out. 2 songs into our set I was
sweating, drenched and sopping wet for the entire show. I got in there and was head-banging and looked
down and one of my entire boobs was hanging out.
BUZZ: What would you like to say to your fans?
Cole: I would love to say Thank You for the last year for the people that have showed up to listen to us. We
have met a bunch of them. They have been really awesome to us. I would like to say Thank You and give
them all a big radio hug.
