Issue 21: Wednesday 17 July 2013
FROM MRS PROVOST-BOYLE: ACTING PRINCIPAL
Last week, all class teachers were released in year levels to analyse and reflect on the data we
collected at the end of Semester 1. These Data Days are one of our strategies to ensure that we
continue to improve student outcomes. We examine our strengths and identify areas that we can
strengthen. We have a dedicated teaching team that strive to improve learning outcomes for your
children.
Great teachers = Great results is the Government’s plan to plan to boost school performance and
improve student outcomes by increasing the professionalism of our teaching workforce,
strengthening student discipline and giving schools more autonomy to meet the needs of their
communities.
Great teachers = Great results is the Queensland Government’s five-year, $537 million action plan
to make our state’s education system even better.
It will:
support teachers with mentoring, training and resources
reward outstanding teachers with career opportunities and scholarships
strengthen state school discipline
allow schools to have more say in how they are run because each school community knows
what’s best for Queensland kids.
The plan will lift standards of teaching and give schools more flexibility to get on with the job with a
range of research-based initiatives to help your child get a great education, no matter where you
live. There will be new ways of measuring and rewarding high performances among our teachers, as
well as strengthened discipline and streamlined processes for suspensions and exclusions.
Find out more about the plan: www.qld.gov.au/greatteachers
Independent Public Schools is an avenue for us to explore and gain more autonomy. The P&C is
supportive of the school pursuing an IPS status in 2014. During Week 3, a survey will be sent out to
all parents to gauge the parent community’s support. For further information on IPS please visit:
http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/independent-public-schools/index.html
2014 Prep Enrolment: If you are residing in the catchment area or have a sibling of a Prep age
child for 2014 and you wish to enrol them in Prep 2014, can you please call into the office to
complete an enrolment form. Enrolment interviews commence 6 August.
Don’t forget that the Library is open for borrowing after school on Monday and Thursday afternoons
from 3.00-3.20pm. Children will be able to use the Library and borrow books on these afternoons.
Please note that children must be accompanied by an adult to use the Library after school.
Enjoy your week.
Well done to 5A for their excellent assembly highlighting the use of ICT in classrooms. The
importance of current practice in ICT cannot be over–emphasised. Children develop the confidence
to utilise technology well when they have access to high-quality teaching and equipment. A great
job, 5A!

Next week’s assembly will be presented by 5C and the award will be for “Being a
Supportive Class Member.” What a lovely award to receive and to know that you are
making your class a positive and happy place to learn and enjoy. Our Dimensions of
Learning framework begins with Dimension One where a supportive class and school
environment is the crucial starting point for learning.
Junior Assembly: Congratulations 2B taking on an important issue and reminding students the
reasons as to why it is important to recycle.
Next week 1D will be hosting the assembly.
Be Safe: I have noticed an increase of students arriving to school on scooters. Please note that
children are not permitted to ride scooters within the school grounds. If you ride your scooter to
school you must dismount as soon as you enter the school gates. This is to ensure the safety of
everyone within the school grounds.
If students are playing in our school playgrounds before or after school they must be supervised by
an adult (parent). All children who arrive to school before the 8.30am bell must go to the Games
Court outside the Tuckshop.
WORLD’S BIGGEST ORCHESTRA
Congratulations to the many students from Ascot State School who participated in the World’s
Biggest Orchestra on Saturday 13 July at Suncorp Stadium. The atmosphere was electric and it
was such a buzz to be one of 7,223 who gathered and BROKE the previous Canadian World Record.
It was a true testament to the power of community music making!
Mrs Doucet and Elliot B from Year 5 were amongst the 1500 trumpet players ready to blow up a
storm in the World’s Largest Trumpet Ensemble. After playing with James Morrison in King George
Square they marched through Queen Street Mall playing their trumpets. What a sight! Even our
mums were involved! There was a world record on the line so it was all hands on deck! Thank you
to Mrs P and Mrs B for getting into it! Current students and past students were spotted on the day.
GOING GREEN AT SCHOOL
Each lunch time at our school rubbish like this is left behind. Some of the
children’s playtime everyday is spent tidying the area. The best way to keep it
clean is to avoid packaging as much as possible. Each person in Australia will
dispose of about 90 kg of packaging a year.
You can avoid excessive packaging by buying in bulk and packaging in smaller
re-useable containers.
