Issue 29: 5 September 2012
FROM MRS BOYLE: THE ACTING PRINCIPAL
Dear All
On Friday and Monday the Prep classes celebrated Father‟s Day. It was wonderful to see so many
Dads spending time in the classrooms. Fathers and significant males in children‟s lives play an
important role in developing important life skills, such as work ethic, loyalty and honesty.
child‟s message to his father was, “I love Dad because he looks like a kangaroo”. Children will love
us for all sorts of reasons, most of all for spending time with them.
History Curriculum
Two of our teachers, Lisa MacPherson and Megan Pickford, are working with Griffith University on a
History research project focussing on implementing the Australian Curriculum. The History
Committee continues to provide professional development for staff on the History Curriculum.
What international references have been drawn upon i n developing the Foundation to
Year 10 Australian Curriculum: History?
The process of developing the Foundation to Year 10 Australian Curriculum: History has included a
review of history curriculum documents nationally and internationally, including the U nited Kingdom,
Finland, Ireland, Canada, Singapore and Hong Kong, and takes account of the latest research into
history teaching. It presents the nation‟s history within regional and world history contexts, rather
than limit ing the presentation of regional and world history to only the national perspective. This is
partly achieved through the use of overviews and comparative examples.
The strand Historical knowledge and understanding includes a wider range of concepts for making
meaning of the past than are commonly found in most international history curricula. These
concepts are drawn from the latest research in the fields of historical thinking and history teaching.
All the best to our Years 5 and 6 Debating teams who are debating tonight.
Debating (Round 3)
FROM MRS HADDEN: MIDDLE SCHOOL YEARS 3-7
Congratulations to our Year 5 students and their teachers who presented this week‟s Assembly
based on their experiences at the recent camp. The children demonstrated how much fun and
learning takes place during the camp. I have had so much positive feedback from the children about
their camp and some messages from parents who recognise the contribution teachers make to
ensure the camp is a safe and memorable time.
Year 4 and Year 6 children have recently completed the QCAT assessment tasks in English, Maths
and Science. These tasks are yet another way to build a picture of student skills and achievements
across the learning areas. Here is a fine example of a narrative written by Eva C of 4B. Well done,
Eva.
A Good Deed Returned
Many years ago in the African outback there lived the fierce and brave king of the jungle, Leo the
lion. Nearby in the jungle lived a small family of monkeys with a baby monkey called Jespa and a
generous mother.
One day when Leo the lion was out hunting he came across the family of monkeys while the mother
was busy preparing Jespa‟s meal. Jespa was sitting in Leo‟s pathway fiddling around but didn‟t
notice that the king of the jungle was standing behind him. Leo was starving and was thinking that
a baby monkey would make a fine meal.
Leo crouched down opened his jaws. “STOP!” yelled the mother monkey, “Please don‟t eat him.” The
lion stood up and looked at the monkey. He bent down and softly picked the baby monkey up and
popped Jespa back up with his mother and slowly walked away knowing that he had done the right
thing.
Several years later the old lion was sauntering through the wilderness when he suddenly became
trapped in a poacher‟s net. The more he struggled the tighter the net became. As night turned to
day the lion felt despair, he lay awaiting his inevitable death.
Crunch! Crunch! Footsteps moved closer through the undergrowth, the lion braced himself ... but
instead of the evil poacher, Leo saw a monkey. The monkey craftily untied the net and freed the lion.
As the lion was freed he stood there wondering why the monkey looked so familiar.
The monkey who was in fact Jespa who remembered the good deed the lion had done for him and
was happy to repay him. The monkey quickly climbed up a high tree and disappeared.
So remember what goes around comes around so do the right thing and it might just save your life.
Thank you for shopping
Many thanks to those parents who have collected shopping dockets for the school, enabling us to
purchase well-utilised sporting equipment. The P.E. Depart ment and class teachers use all the

equipment to provide a wider variety of skills training and games for the children during
lessons and at lunch time. We are also able to store some new equipment to replace
worn and lost items which is a great cost saver for our school. We would like to thank
Kathryn, our Tuckshop Convenor, for collecting the dockets.
Student of the Week 3-7
Next week‟s Assembly will be presented by 3D. The award is for Demonstrating the ability to Work
Independently. We spend a great deal of our time not only encouraging the skills of co-operation
and teamwork, but also developing the skills of working independently. Being able to make decisions,
draw conclusions and justify one‟s thinking is a sign of growing confidence. Congratulations to the
Junior Assembly
Congratulations 1A on a terrific Assembly presentation on Monday. 1A presented their assembly
item on „The Wonderful World of Books’. The children‟s colourful costumes of their favourite authors
and magical dioramas which displayed 1A‟s favourite books were a highlight .
Reading is one of our priorities at Ascot State School. It was very obvious the love of reading that
has been fostered in the children of 1A. Thank you to all of our parents for the time and dedication
that you give to Ascot State School, whether this be through reading to your child at home, listening
to your child read or assisting with morning reading and literacy activities in our classrooms. I know
the teachers really appreciate your kind assistance as well.
Cubby House
As mentioned in last week‟s Digest, we have been very
fortunate to acquire a cubby house – created, built and then
donated to us by current Year 12 Nudgee College boys.
Here is a photo of our new cubby house and past student
Jack T, pictured with Year 2 students Isla, Nick and Molly.
The cubby house will be placed in the Year 1/2 Playground.

iPads in our Class Rooms
Last week I presented a workshop to our Teacher Aides on using our iPads. We went through the
general operation of iPads and introduced some of our apps that have been installed. Teacher Aides
may, from time to time, work with small groups or be involved in one on one learning using the
iPads. They were very excited to see the potential that iPads can have on student learning and
achievement. This week I a m presenting a workshop to our Teachers. I look forward to being able
to share the valuable and rich learning experiences that are happening in our classrooms using the
iPads.
ICT – 2D
This year in 2D, we have been using technology in the classroom through a range o f mediums.
Interactive whiteboard activities are used to enhance the learning experience, while the classroom
iPad is also used to complement student learning, specifically during maths and literacy based
activities.
This term in Media, we have been investigating how advertising can target certain audiences
through catchy titles, bright colours, appealing pictures and interesting facts. In conjunction with our
Health unit, where we have been investigating the 5 food groups, the children have used PowerPoint
to create their own healthy food advertisement. The children learnt how to insert text, change the
background colour, use the Google search engine to search for a picture and finally copy and paste
the chosen picture into the PowerPoint. It was amazing how quickly the children were able to pick
up these tasks and then proceed to help teach children around them!
Some of the fabulous work we produced is pictured below.

OUR FEATURED IPAD APP OF THE WEEK
‘iMovie’ - ($5.49 – compatible with iPad and iPhone- IOS 5.1).
http://www.apple.com/au/search/?q=imovie&section=ipoditunes&geo=au
„iMovie‟ is a video editing app that allows users to import video, photos, sound
including music and voice recording. iMovie is designed for Multi-Touch, so all users
have to do is tap, swipe and drag to make their movie come alive. As well as
creating video projects from scratch, you can also choose from the available trailer templates.
These templates provide a great start for any beginner. It also provides a storyboard to help users
to decide on what shots to use. iMovie is quick and easy to use and allows users to see their movie
being created in an instant.
I am introducing iMovie to our Year 6 students this week and I look forward to seeing their creative
work come alive.
TRAVEL SAFE
When Driving in the Car
When driving and in the car it is important to follow these key safety tips:

Make sure your child gets in and out of the car on the footpath side, away from the
traffic.
Put loose objects in the boot or on the floor. Explain to your child how unsecured
objects could hit a passenger and hurt them in a crash.
Talk to your child about behaviour that affects your concentration when you are
driving. Praise them when they have been well behaved and considerate as a passenger.
All passengers must wear a seat belt or child restraint. Assist your child when putting on a
restraint and encourage your child to check that they are “clicked in” properly.

Changes to the child restraint laws in March 2010 mean that all children up to seven years of age
must be restrained in an Australian Standard approved child restraint according to their age and
size. A properly fastened and adjusted child restraint or booster seat will reduce the chances of
your child being injured in a crash and improve their chances of surviving a serious crash. Not
using restraints correctly is putting their lives at risk. An adult seatbelt will not protect a young
child in the same way as it protects an adult. As the driver, you can also be fined and
accumulate demerit points for every passenger that is not wearing a seatbelt or not restrained in
an appropriate and properly fastened and adjusted child rest raint. For more information on child
restraints and choosing the correct restraint for your child visit
www.tmr.qld.gov.au/childrestraints.
Children under seven must travel in the back seats unless the seats are already taken by
children under seven. The rear of the car is generally safer in a crash. A child of any age can sit
in the front seat if the vehicle has only one row of seats (such as a ute) and they are properly
restrained. If the vehicle has a passenger airbag fitted, a rearward facing child restraint should
not be used.
The changes to the child restraint rules mean a child under four years of age must not sit in the
front row of seats in a vehicle that has more than one row of seats, even if the child is three
years of age and large enough to be seated in a booster seat.
Parents should talk to their children about wearing a seatbelt correctly, such as ensuring the
seatbelt sits firmly over their shoulder and not around their neck or under their arm and across
their stomach. Also, it should be stressed that booster seats and special child restraints are not
only for “babies”, as children who are beginning school may view them in this way .
