Play Time in the
Drama Department!
The Drama Department has had a very busy time lately
with plays galore! The AS Drama group presented three
plays to a packed Drama Studio in May.
The dark comedy The Woman Who Cooked Her Husband
began the evening followed by the controversial Greek, a
parody of the Greek Tragedy Oedipus. Ending the evening was
Willy Russel's farce One For The Road. The performances
were all to a very high standard and were fully enjoyed by the
audience of family and friends.
The GCSE practical exams also proved to be very entertaining
as Year 11 Drama groups celebrated the end of months of hard
work in their final performance exam.
The plays on offer ranged from the period comedy The
Importance Of Being Earnest to the ever popular Bouncers.
Others plays featured included Find Me, Shakers and Mother
Figure. Two groups even tackled devising performances with
some great results! Their hard work all paid off in time and the
performances were very impressive.
Well done to all concerned.
A Great Night Out!
Year 8 Workshop
Some talented Year 9 students from Horsforth School were
selected to perform as part of Calverley Players’ recent
production of Our Day Out by Willy Russell.
This lively play follows the 'Progress class' and their school trip to
the seaside. The Year 9 students involved put on a very
convincing performance as the rowdy class on the bus, they
even did a bit of singing too! Jenni Glew and Romany Lowe
shared the main part of Carol with equal success whilst Owen
Lokuciejewski-Taylor in Year 12, stole the show with his role as
bad boy 'Digga'. The trip to the zoo was particularly hilarious and
even involved real animals - including a chicken provided by
Owen! Their play was a great success and they should all be very
proud!
Talented Drama students from Year 8 were chosen to take part in a workshop with local
Theatre Company The Paper Birds. This gave them the chance to work with professionals
and create drama as well as developing their acting skills. A great time was had by all.
In the region of sixty students in Years 7 to 12 took part in the Horsforth School teams’ swimming gala on
Tuesday 18th May. The event was won by the Perch team organised by Mrs Noble and Mrs Sanderson. This
was a good attendance and followed on from the individuals' swimming gala last November when 49 boys
and 18 girls competed. The Horsforth School swimming team this year qualified for the championship on 27th
April and came sixth in the overall citywide league which was the best achievement for several years.
At this gala guest of honour, Deputy Headteacher John Dooley, presented commemorative medals and plates
to a number of Year 11 swimmers who have consistently supported the school swimming programme since
arriving in Year 7 in 2005. Namely, Joe Sanderson, Jake Harris, Matthew Staniland, Laura Purcell and
Stephanie Forster who have also been stalwarts of the school team and Matthew Shaw, Callum Gunn, Mark
Rawlinson and Alex Yu who have also been highly involved in the swimming programme. Awards were also
given to Judd Cummins and Joe Pinnick in Year 12 who have also been strongly committed to swimming
during their time at school.
John Dooley congratulated the swimmers who received awards for their achievements and thanked the team
of staff and parents who work hard to make the swimming programme an ongoing success. Organiser James
Bovington added, 'I am particularly proud of the young people in Years 11 and 12 whose commitment we have
honoured and want to thank them, my colleagues, all younger swimmers in Year 10 and below and the school
for making a quite ambitious swimming programme possible, enjoyable and successful.’
Easter Chicks
Miss McFadden's Year 7 pupils were privileged to hatch chickens in
their classroom at Easter as part of an Ecology Project,
encompassing Science, English and Maths activities. Classes
7B5 and 7R5 excitedly awaited the arrival of the 12 eggs in early April.
Gradually the eggs began to hatch and continued to do so until we had ten
fluffy baby chicks. We hatched six cockerels and four hens. Both Year 7
groups were heavily involved in caring for the chicks which included;
cleaning them out, feeding them, washing their feet and exercising them
(letting them run around in our classroom!). All pupils worked really well
and were very trustworthy in their roles. Well done! The chicks are now
growing well and living a fully free range life on a farm in Leeds.
Spanish Short Story
Competition
Finn Lees of form 9Y was able to let his imagination and fantasy run wild recently by entering a short story
competition. What's more, it was all in Spanish! The competition was organised by the Instituto Cervantes
and the Consejería de Educación of the Spanish Embassy to celebrate International Book Day on April
rd
23 . The theme of the competition was ‘The Quijote in Your Life’ and youngsters were invited to write a story of
up to 500 words based on somebody who reminded them of Miguel de Cervantes' famously eccentric character.
Finn therefore wrote an intriguing and amusing tale about an eccentric nobleman with a penchant for fine food
and port, and delusions of being a Greek hero. One day he set out on his bike to carry out his heroic duties and
ended up rescuing a 'damsel in distress' who wanted him to help her reduce carbon emissions!
Although Finn didn't win the competition, his story will still be published, together with the other entries, in a
collection produced by the organisers. As Finn's Spanish teacher, I am very proud of his work and thoroughly
enjoyed reading it.
Fairy Tales in the French
Classroom
Mr Bovington's Year 8 French class
recently staged short plays of
traditional fairy tales in French, after
several lessons’ practice. Productions were
brief but presented in French the gist of
stories such as Goldilocks, Narnia and
Cinderella. 'The standard varied,' said class
teacher James Bovington, 'but I was pleased
that all thirty students in the class gave it a go
and took part.’
The photograph shows the cast of the
winning production of Cinderella.
Year 7 Students
Become Published Poets
Students in Year 7 have had their poetry published
after achieving success in a national competition.
The students in Miss Gibbs' 7R3 group, wrote 'Mini-
Sagas' - short stories told in 50 words on a subject of their
choice. The competition is organised and run annually by
the Young Writers’ Organisation, and successful students
have received a certificate of merit and bookmark for their
efforts. The winning entries, yet to be announced, will
receive cash prizes for their school. All of the students in
7R3 had their poetry selected for publication in a national
collection and will soon see their work in print. Well done!
Work Experience
Between 28 June and 9 July all Year 10 students
th
once again spent two weeks out in the world of work.
Despite the recent economic situation all Year 10
students were successful in obtaining placements in a wide
variety of working environments from hospitals to police
stations, magistrates court to farms and activity centres to
name but a few.
A big thank you to all local employers for their help with this
year's programme; photos and a full report will appear in the
takes place each year at Leeds University is attended by in excess
of 3000 school children from around the region who take part in
various different fun activities, which celebrate the wonderful world
of science, mathematics, engineering and environment.
The Horsforth School students met with TV show host Aggie
McKenzie to investigate the claims of leading brands of household
cleaners and to discover the science, technology, innovation and
st
environmental issues which surround cleaning our houses in the 21
Year 10 Geography Residential to
Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby
During the last week of April, nearly 50 Year 10 Geography students took part in a two and a
half day residential field trip to the East Coast of Yorkshire. The week was divided into two –
with half the students being involved for the first half of the week, and the rest of the
students during the second half of the week staying at the Old School House Field Centre in Robin
Hood's Bay. Both groups were very lucky with the weather as it stayed dry and fairly warm
throughout the week. There was a full programme of activities and teaching which included visiting
coastal sites at Flamborough, Mappleton and Hornsea to revise in the field for their module exam
in June. They also conducted field research in Whitby for Task 1 of their controlled assessments
which contributes towards 15% of their GCSE grade. All of the students worked hard and their
behaviour was a credit to the school.
Horsforth Welcomes French Students
Twenty Year 10 students were delighted to welcome their French partners to Horsforth in May when a
group from our partner school the Collège Montaigne visited us for a week following our June 2009
visit there.
The French students enjoyed a varied programme which included football and swimming events, a meal at
Harry Ramsden's and an evening disco. The French group also visited York and Liverpool and enjoyed a
reception at the Leeds Civic Hall with the deputy Lord Mayor local Horsforth councillor Andrew Barker. For
many of the visiting students a real highlight, however, was an afternoon spent teaching French to Year 5
students at St. Margaret's School.
‘I had a great time receiving my partner here and he had a good time, just like we all did in Conflans last June,'
said Tom Roberts (10 C). 'There were lots of interesting things to do here and in France,' added Lizzie Lloyd
(10O), 'but above all we'll never forget the experience getting to know our french partners.'
James Bovington who organised the exchange said, 'Seeing the
young people getting to know each other and developing their
foreign language skills makes organising the exchange
worthwhile. We have a strong tradition of organising popular
exchanges here at Horsforth and want to thank our French
colleagues for being as committed to a thriving exchange as we
are. I hope that the Year 9 students who went to France this June
had as good a time as last year's group.'
The Collège Montaigne has about 600 students aged 11-15 and
is situated in Conflans Sainte-Honorine in the north-western
suburbs of Paris, about half an hour by train from the centre of the
French capital.
La Salamanca
2010
It was the dull, drab, dreary English morning on the
th
4 of April, when Horsforth School students, both
young and old, began their fun-filled, hilarious,
week – namely La Salamanca 2010!
We waved 'adios 'as the coach departed from school.
As quickly as the Pennines flicked by, we were pulling
up at Liverpool Airport and were quickly boarding our
plane…and arriving in Spain!
Snow peaked mountains were softly silhouetted against the sumptuous Spanish spring azure sky. Not a
cloud was in sight. From the moment we watched Madrid disappear to the instant we noticed the cathedral
spires of Salamanca, the sky was cloudless.
Upon arrival, each group of at least two people was introduced to their Spanish 'Mamas' and without further
a-do was whisked away. Although perhaps a little bit daunting at first, the warm welcome (and climate) of
España made all those settling in, after an exhausting day of travel, know they were in for a fantastic week
ahead!
The mornings in the sleepy city began snappily as we arrived pronto and alert for the day's events. A brisk
walk to the centre of town for a gathering of all the students and staff, English and Spanish, was followed by a
morning activity. Throughout the week, more laid-back excursions from tours to treasure hunts, football in
the squares, cafes to shopping, or just 'caterpillar chilling' all happened in the meandering mornings.
After each morning activity, the groups returned for lunch with their families and a traditional siesta. An hour's
break was all we had though, as we were rapidly back in the centre for our four hours of Spanish lessons -
'Los Cursos de Español' - at Academia Isla. The lessons were always thoroughly enjoyable and helped
improve our ability to speak Spanish greatly. Finding new friends along the way was a bonus!
In the evening, another return 'home', another quick mealtime and another walk to the centre of Salamanca
to meet up, meant it was time for the most fun part of the day - the evening activities! Despite the group's
fatigue after manic, long days, we never failed to have fabulous amounts of fun! The group did karaoke
singing and salsa dancing, paella eating and enjoyed a tapas evening and relaxing in the Plaza and giddy
partying and…phew, the list goes on!
Before we knew it, it was the end of the week. A marvellous, thoroughly worn-out mob of eleven Year 9, three
Year 10, four Year 13 students and two teachers were suddenly clambering onto an aeroplane, drained to a
point of bemusement. All too quickly, we were swooping into good old England again. I think most of us had
forgotten what clouds looked like!
Simon Barker Year 13: 'I loved Salamanca........
It was an amazing trip. My favourite moment was
probably dancing the night away!'
Hannah Ferraby Year 9: ‘The Spanish family we
stayed with were really nice and I had an amazing
time in Salamanca.’
Matthew Barton Year 9: 'The best bit was my
shoe going over the wall when we were playing
football…into the Nunnery!'
Many thanks to all those who took part in the visit
and made it so amazing! Special thanks go to
Señora Ellison and Señor Bovington, mostly for
coping with a rabble such as us for a week!
Form 7Y Fundraising for Charity
Report by Kirsty Hobbs and Kyle Richardson 7Y
This year form 7Y decided to raise money for Cancer Research. They chose Easter as their theme for a fabulous
bun sale and scrumptious Easter hampers raffle. As everyone loves chocolate the students in the form group
didn't take much persuasion to contribute. Every day for three weeks the students were out in force selling raffle
tickets to win an Easter hamper. The lucky winners were Alaynia Garforth of form 13JES and Rafal Chmiel of form 7G.
Form 7Y also held a chocolate theme bun sale which was a great success.
They also decided to hold a 'Name the Duck' competition when a beautiful Easter duckling arrived in their classroom
with no name. More than fifty names were chosen. Mrs Sanderson drew the winning ticket and they waved a sad
goodbye to the duck, now named Frederick, as it went to its new owner, Katharine Murie of 7S. These events raised a
grand total of approximately £200 for their charity.
A number of students from the form also raised money for the charity by participating in a sponsored silence. Other
fundraising activities have been organised by a small group from the form such as a ‘throw a wet sponge at the teacher’
event along with more bun and fancy pens sales, with proceeds of approximately £100 going to Martin House.
Mrs Carrara is extremely proud of her form and all their fund raising efforts.
Allotment Update
Summer’s here and as you can see from
our photographs below we have had
some beautiful sunny days. Due to the
mixture of very wet, very warm and also sunny
weather we have seen a lot of growth in the
allotment. I am really happy with the way the club
has progressed and how much of the
management is organised by the students
themselves. Two 6th form students have been
organising activities throughout the year and as
ever, our faithful Year 8 and 9 students attend
every week to clean, weed and hopefully, soon
SCIENCE WEEK 2010
HIGHLIGHTS
Thirty Year 7 students went to Leeds University and met Aggie McKenzie.
They got the chance to learn about the science behind bacterial growth,
vacuum cleaners and many other aspects of domestic cleanliness
(see separate article on page 3).
A second group of Year 7 students also visited Leeds University and performed
a range of chemical experiments to solve a crime, came up with wonderfully
creative designs to help people in a disaster situation and watched explosive
demonstrations by the BBC One Show's Dr Marty Jopson.
Other students saw Mark Wilson of the Institute of Engineering Thermo Fluids,
Surfaces & Interfaces at Leeds University provide an interactive demonstration of the
science behind favourite super heroes such as Spiderman, Wolverine and Batman.
Jane Jiang of form 7G was the winner of the Endanger Rangers Poster Competition,
helping to raise the profile of endangered plants and animals all over the world. She
won an iPod shuffle.
The 'Hunt the Scientist' competition was particularly challenging this year thanks to
Mr King’s cunning selection of poster positions! It took real perseverance for Ben
Bilsborough 11O to find all twenty and be the proud winner of an iPod shuffle.
The whole of Year 10 had the unique opportunity to design and create their own
soap product with 'Soapbox Enterprise'. Their original, innovative creations were
admired by everyone.
Year 9 was lucky enough to be the chosen group to watch the BBC One Shows
Scientist, Marty Jopson perform his amazing range of science experiments. A real
privilege!
Year 8 came up with innovative solutions to the problems we face with climate
change in the 'Our World 2050' event, hosted by the Institute of Mechanical
Engineers. Phil Willis was delighted by the ideas that our students presented.
Mike Hoyland is a truly incredible scientist and performs the most amazing, large
scale science experiments; it was a pleasure to welcome him once again and to
be wowed by his extreme explosions and huge range of astounding
demonstrations. Year 11 students were really honoured to have the chance to
watch Mike perform in our school hall.
The 'Maths Cryptic Challenge' and 'The Maths of Chaos' events at Leeds University were very much enjoyed
by Year 10 and 6th Form students; a unique opportunity to get a taste of the applications of Maths at
University level.
Even our local Primary Schools got involved with Science Week at Horsforth School and it was a pleasure to
welcome them to the best ever Planetarium event; thoroughly enjoyed by all. We also welcomed them to the
Zoolab experience; giving students the rare opportunity to handle exotic rainforest creatures.
Step Out In Style
n a m a z i n g e v e n i n g
celebrating our Year 11
Astudents' last five years at
school was held on June 24th at the
Village Hotel in Leeds. Students
arrived at the hotel in style – stretch
limousines and Hummers, sports
cars, a camper van, and a delivery
van with 'special delivery' on the
front to name but a few.
All the students looked amazing. The
girls were very glamorous in their
prom dresses and the boys very
dapper in their suits and tuxedos.
The event was attended by 192
students and in excess of 60
members of staff. The evening
kicked off with the Year 11 band
called 'Sprayed Aces' who got
everyone in the mood to dance. It
was a fun-filled evening with a buffet,
dancing and amusing awards
presented to the students. The finale
of the evening was the crowning of
the Prom King and Queen, Harry
Wainwright and Lucinda Layfield.
Mrs Symons who has been a Year 11
tutor for several years is retiring this
summer and was presented with a
leaving gift to say thank you for the
dedicated support she has given to
both students and staff over the
years.
Mr Collins, Progress Leader for KS4
said, 'It was wonderful to see the
students looking so smart and
enjoying themselves. It is a great way
to celebrate the last five years and
surviving the examinations. It was a
fabulous evening which will be a
great memory to all those who
attended. Best wishes to all Year 11
students for the results day and for
next year as they move onto the next
stage of their career, whether it be in
th
the 6 form at Horsforth School, at
local colleges or working.’
Dine Out In Style
ear 13 students celebrated in
style as their seven years at
YHorsforth School came to a
close in May at the Leavers' Prom.
Over 160 students and staff enjoyed
a three course meal followed by
entertainment, awards and dancing
at the Ramada Leeds Parkway Hotel.
Many students added an original
touch to the opening stages of the
event by arriving at the venue after a
scenic tour in a double decker 'Prom
Bus' which they hired especially for
the occasion.
Some fine food was followed by the
th
premiere of two Horsforth School 6
performance of Lou Reed's 'Perfect
tutors and Mr Mason, directed by Mrs
Hazell. This fine piece of memorabilia
can now be viewed on youtube! The
Golden Bunsen Competition at Temple Moor
Saying Goodbye...
Constructing a device to remain sunken for a maximum of sixty
seconds sounds easy but we can assure you it is not! Our Key Stage
3 and Key Stage 4 Golden Bunsen teams used every scrap of
scientific knowledge and ingenuity to come up with their 'sink-rise machine'
and presented their findings to an audience of about eighty Leeds students.
Congratulations to Bhanu Pillay, Fliss Chaplin,
Sam Beevors and Miles Tidman for coming
second (with a particularly impressive
presentation) and also to Alivia Cawley, Anya
Salhi, Abi Houseman and Archie Whitaker for
coming third in their group – with an especially
unique contraption!
It is with regret that we have to say goodbye at the end of term to several members of staff, all of
whom have made a significant contribution to the life of Horsforth School. We have to bid farewell to
Kate Bradley, Laura Bownass, Caroline Jackson, Natalie Metcalfe, Dave Mulvaney, Sarah
Peel and Charlotte Twigger who are moving to pastures new and we wish them every success for
their future. Congratulations and good wishes go to Lucy Brown, Claire Lucas and Sam Gibbs
who will all be taking maternity leave from September.
We send special wishes for a happy and relaxing retirement to Jenny Willmore and Gail Symons
and hope they will enjoy many new ventures in the future.
Jenny Willmore is retiring this summer after 28 years as a History teacher at
Horsforth School. Jenny has been a cornerstone of the Department during this
time and one of the most successful GCSE teachers in the School.
Jenny will continue working with children in her retirement. She already gives up her
time to work at a project where severely disabled children are given opportunities to
ride donkeys. The scheme demonstrates Jenny's twin passions of helping
disadvantaged children and animal welfare. Indeed many generations of
Horsfordians may best remember Miss Willmore through tales of her beloved dogs!
The School and the History Department will certainly miss her and we wish Jenny a
very happy and active retirement.
Gail Symons is also retiring at the end of the summer term after 11 years at
Horsforth School. Gail has been a valued colleague in the Maths
Department where students have benefited from her hard work and
dedication, particularly when running Key Stage 4 Mathematics but also in
connection with the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Maths Challenges in which the
school has participated for several years, through the UK Mathematics Trust.
Organising these challenges has involved much work and Gail has been successful
in developing and inspiring the interest of many students to achieve high results and
many Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates through the challenges.
We wish Gail a well earned and happy retirement.
A big welcome ...
We are delighted to welcome a number of new staff who will be joining us in the new academic year:
Paul Bell and Judith Nelson will be joining the Leadership Team both as Assistant Headteachers;
Helen Bagshaw, Emma DiGiorgio and Heather Sweeney will be joining the Science Department;
Ruth Burrell, Charlotte Green, Karen Owen and Melanie Stagg are our new additions to the
English Department; James Harrison, Vicky Haycock, Sarah Kingston and Julia Mahoney
(who has already been with us for one term) will join the Maths Department; Sunita Chandegra is
our new colleague in ICT; Susannah North will join the History Department and Zoe Wilkinson will
join the Art Department; Louise Dixon joined the Design & Technology Department recently as a
maternity replacement for Sharon Mayo and Sam Haigh is our new Assistant Superintendent. We
wish all of them a happy and successful career at Horsforth School.
Year 9 Healthfair – 16 June
To promote healthy living and 'keeping safe' theme during Horsforth
Health Week, the Lifeskills Department held a Health Fair in the
school hall for all Year 9 students. They had the opportunity to talk to
a variety of Health Care professionals and external agencies, including
school nurses, police, sexual health team, the teenage pregnancy unit, first
aid, road safety and drugs and alcohol specialists. Students were given
valuable information on keeping safe and healthy. They took part in
demonstrations, sampled healthy food, learnt the recovery position and
even tried to walk 'the line' with simulated 'beer goggles'.
Mrs Nowell said that it had been a very successful day, students not only
enjoyed the event but had discovered new ideas and developed new skills.
A special thanks to all involved including Mrs Kennedy's ASDAN groups
who helped deliver the Dr Abc and first aid.
Year 7 - 5 A Day Treasure Hunt - 17th June
To help celebrate the theme of healthy living, on Thursday 17th June, Year
7 took part in a ‘FIVE A DAY’ treasure hunt organised by the Life Skills
Department. Photographs of different types of fruit and vegetables were
hidden around all parts of the school building and students used their break
and lunch time periods to search for as many items as they possibly could.
Students were able to learn the correct portion sizes for their ‘five a day’
and keep fit at the same time!
REFURBISHMENT OF FOOD TECHNOLOGY ROOMS
Iam very pleased to be able to report that the two Food Technology rooms are going to be re-furbished
ready for the new school year in September. Although the physical size of the rooms will not change, the
rooms have been planned to include more work spaces and sinks.
This is good news for every one who uses the rooms. Watch this space in the next Newsletter for
well attended with over 200 pupils, several staff and Governor Ray Agar coming to celebrate the
participation and success in sport over the last year. The evening was packed full of awards, photos,
speeches, music and a table tennis demonstration. The guest speaker was Stephanie Wilson from Netball
Super League. It was the two speeches from students Harry Coleman and Lucie Layfield, however, which
stole the limelight. We were delighted that so many pupils attended and expect the evening to become an
integral part of the sporting calendar.
BOYS’ FOOTBALL - SEASON REVIEW
Year 7
A strong second half of the season led to an improvement
in results and the boys reached the semi-final of the
Leeds Schools’ Cup where they lost to a strong Garforth
team. Highlights have included a 4 - 1 victory over Morley
and a 4 - 0 win over Benton Park. There have been
outstanding performances from Nick Myers, Josh
Browne, Kristian Smith, Sam Otway and Player of the
Year Lawrence Wilson. Alex Wiggan finished top scorer
with 8 goals. Well done, boys, hopefully next year we can
go one step further in the cup.
Year 8
Having made a slow start to the season winning one game in the first five, the boys ended up
losing just once in their final five games. They finished the season with a 3 - 1 victory over Benton
Park. Lewis Riley finished top scorer with 8 goals in 10 games and Ali Unsworth received the
Player of the Year Award.
Year 9
Year 7 Boys’ Football Team
Leeds Schools’ Cup
Semi-Finalists
The Year 9 football team had a really enjoyable year with some fantastic performances and
results throughout. After an early exit in the cup the boys performed admirably in the league with
some fantastic wins over Ralph Thorsby, Ilkley Grammar and Prince Henry's scoring 11 and
conceding none. It was this type of form that enabled the boys to reach the league semi finals
where unfortunately we lost to a very strong Priesthorpe side.
There have been many strong performances throughout the year from all the team but there
could only be one player of the season and that went to Liam Bennett for his commitment and
goals coming from midfield.
BOYS’ FOOTBALL REVIEW continued
Year 10
The season started very well as we eased through until
Christmas unbeaten and riding high. We faltered a little in the
league after Christmas, but still made it through to the league
final after an excellent battling semi-final victory in the rain
and mud. Unfortunately it wasn't to be, however, as we
narrowly lost in the final in a very evenly contested game. The
Leeds Schools’ Cup gave us an opportunity to pick up the
silverware that our play throughout the season deserved,
and that was achieved in some style, with a 2- 0 victory in the
final at South Leeds Stadium.
Notable mentions go to Ben Hopkinson, Joel Davenport and
Elliot Morgan for their consistently good play throughout the
season, as well as to Dom Howard and Will McLoughlin for
some excellent performances in their first season with us
and, finally, to Daniel Fletcher for an assured goal keeping
performance in the cup final.
Year 11
Year 10 Football Team
Winners of the
Leeds Schools’ Cup
The Year 11 squad is extremely talented and team who had several players representing
was therefore entered into the West Yorkshire Premiership Clubs and England Under 16s.
County Cup. On route to the final of this Still, this was a great achievement. We didn't
competition the highlights were against two do so well in the Leeds area losing on
strong sides namely Shelley College and penalties to the eventual winners, Primrose,
Brooksbank. These games resulted in 3 - 2 and getting knocked out in the league play-off
victories after goals from Danny Palombo, semi final.
Brad King, Luke Robinson and James Thorp, Throughout the year we had many strong
not to mention a match saving block from performances. Josh Avery made great
Matty Nebard.
progress and has become a solid goal keeper,
At half time against Ryburn Valley in the final in defence Chris Bellfield was ‘Mr Consistent’
we trailed 3 - 2 with a long range goal from and Luke Robinson was as commanding as
Luke and a good strike from George Hancock. ever. In midfield Richard Vennard and Danny
We dominated the second half and had two Palombo were fantastic and James Thorp was
goals disallowed - it just wasn't meant to be. very dangerous out on the wing. In attack Brad
As County Cup finalists we progressed to the King started to score the chances his speed
National Competition where some fine saves created and worked well with George
from Josh Avery kept us in the 3 - 2 victory over Hancock; who is talented, strong, passionate
Valley School in Lincolnshire. A trip to Durham and best of all a great leader in the team, so
for a place in the last 32 teams in the Country much so he was promoted to captain, finished
and a goal from George Hancock was a top scorer with 10 goals and won the Player of
consolation as we crashed 3 - 1 to a big strong the Year Award.
Year 11 Football
Yorkshire Cup Final
6th Form
st
The 1 XI had an indifferent season showing good
form in the league but struggling for results in the cup
competitions! The key performers throughout the
season were Joe Pinnick, Tom White, captain Greg
Rowell, player of the season Joe Marsden and the
prolific strike partnership of Jack Moglia and Matthew
Hartley who shared 20 goals between them. Jordan
McKenna deserves a special mention for his efforts
refereeing several teams throughout the season.
Thank you and well done.
Athletic’s Success 2010
Once again the school athletics team has started the season fantastically. All
Leadership Round Up
This year has been an excellent year for leadership opportunities and events.
Eighteen students have completed the Sports Leaders UK level 2 award
(CSLA). For this they undertook a four day course including a recognised First Aid
award and a disabilities workshop. They have also done at least 10 hours of
leading sport in the community. Sports have ranged from football, rugby,
cheerleading as well as running a multiskill club for primary children aged 4 - 6
years for the last two terms. Five of our CSLA leaders have also been part of the
Leeds Academy Leadership Programme and have attended training at Elland
Road to develop their skills further. They have then gone into primary schools in the
local area to run leadership workshops for Year 6 pupils.
Year 11 GCSE / BTec and Year 10 BTec groups have also been progressing
towards the above award by achieving the Junior Sports Leader Award. Sixty
students have been gaining leadership experience by taking sessions in local
primary schools as well as running multiskill festivals at Horsforth school.
Three Year 9 girls have also started on the road to becoming leaders by
volunteering to coach hockey at the primary school hockey club bases at school
on Friday nights. Well done to them.
Top Link
Top link is a national scheme for leadership run across the whole of
the UK. The Leeds Schools Partnership combine together to run this
project which took place during a full week in June. Our Top link
leaders this year are Year 10 students Tom Roberts, Ben Hopkinson,
Molly Pickering and Vicky Mather. They have attended a national
training day at Tong School along with all the other Top Link leaders in
West Yorkshire and are now planning a world cup competition for
Year 6 students in our local feeder schools.
SPORTS ROUND UP Continued
Year 7 Cricket
The Year 7 cricket team has got off to a good start to their
Horsforth careers. After a slow start to the season the
team has had some good wins over Allerton and Abbey
Grange. There have been several stand out performers
so far with Danny Taylor contributing heavily with both
bat and ball, and Alex Wiggan, Tom Colley and Luke
Townend who have all performed consistently well. It
would be great to see more Year 7 boys at training to
emulate the world cup winning England cricket team!!
Year 8 Cricket
The Year 8 cricket team has had a mixed start to the
season. The two games they have played have
resulted in two losses despite some good
performances. The game against Morley at home
was an absolute classic going to the last over. Top
performers have been Harry Jeavons and Tom
Nixon with the ball and Danny Taylor from Year 7
with the bat. Well done to everyone!.
STOP PRESS!
Earlier this year in March, as reported in the
Spring Newsletter, Year 9 students took part in a
World Record attempt to produce the largest ever
simultaneous, interactive weather report. Mrs
Hazell is pleased to report that we succeeded in
our mission and Horsforth School are officially
part of the BBC School Report's first ever entry
into the Guinness Book of World Records. We've
been sent a certificate as proof of our
achievement and well done to everyone involved
on the day. We are certainly looking forward to the
excitement of News Report next year.
In Lasting Memory ...
tudents and parents / carers will all
know of the tragic loss in April of
SFran Morris, who was such an
inspiration to so many students at
Horsforth School over her years as a
member of the Leadership Team and as a
teacher at the school. Plans are now
taking shape to create a memorial in the
Year 7 courtyard, outside what was Mrs
Morris' office.
It is hoped to include a flowing water feature and seating area in slate
as a lasting tribute to the unfailing dedication and contribution which
Mrs Morris made to the school. In addition, it is likely that a school
prize will be created in her name which will be awarded annually at the
School Prize Evening.
