The beginning of the year is when most 

of us take some time to think about where 

we are, where we want to be and what it 

will take to get there. We set goals and 

make resolutions which are all focused 

on various levels of improvement or 

success. Magnolia Manor is poised once 

again to strengthen the bonds of respect, 

responsibility and caring both for the 

people and with the people around us. 

It is another new beginning filled with 

infinite possibilities. What can we do 

to improve our outcomes and the 

perceptions people have of who we are? 

In Fred Lee’s book, If Disney Ran Your 

Hospital, one concept really jumped out 

at me. He stated “In the battle for 

supremacy of perceptions in the patient’s 

mind, our competition is anyone the 

patient compares us to. Unfortunately 

they do not usually compare us to other 

hospitals.” The same premise works 

for Magnolia Manor in our healthcare 

facilities, but the real question then 

becomes, if not the facilities near our 

community then who? 

“When organizations spend most of 

their efforts in clinic results and process 

improvement, their data is defined by 

outcomes and therefore can be measured 

objectively. The resident, however, judges 

quality by his or her perceptions, something 

that is subjective and cannot be verified 

in the same way.” At Magnolia Manor we 

must take a larger view of our competition 

because as Mr. Lee’s book states, “the 

truth is that our competition is anyone 

our customers compare us to.”

Good Samaritan 

“Thank You”, The Way To Begin 

My wife, Jacki, is a teacher in an 

elementary school. She recently had 

foot surgery and returned to school. 

Everyone was willing to help her as 

she hobbled with her foot. Once she 

was carrying a couple of boxes and 

hobbling up the hall. A fifth grade 

teacher drafted a couple of boys to 

carry the boxes to Jacki’s room. As 

they walked to Jacki’s room, she asked 

them this question, “What one thing 

do you want most for Christmas?” 

One of the boys answered quickly 

concerning an electronic toy. The 

other boy said, “Mrs. Beasley, I don’t 

really need anything, but I am going 

to be really grateful for whatever I 

get.” Jacki told him how proud of 

him she was for his attitude. 

As we begin the New Year, what will 

be our attitude? Will we rush into new 

adventures, new challenges, new routines 

without the thought of what we have 

been able to accomplish and without 

a sense of gratitude? Psalm 107 begins 

with the words, “O give thanks to the 

Lord, for He is good; for his steadfast 

love endures forever.” Following these 

words are several acknowledgements 

of how the Lord had delivered persons 

from the difficulties of life. The psalmist 

is stopping to glance back with gratitude 

so that he may go forth with assurance. 

I am reminded of a saying I saw on 

the blackboard in a High School 

classroom, “Attitude, not aptitude, 

determines altitude”. 

The attitude here at Magnolia 

Manor is one of gratitude for those 

individuals, congregations, sponsors, 

and foundations who faithfully give 

in support of the ministry for older 

adults in our communities in South 

Georgia. Through the partnership of 

these generous and gracious donors, 

we have assurance that the promise 

of the League of the Good Samaritan 

will continue. We are sure the Staff 

will continue to practice Servant 

Leadership, offering the best of care 

for our residents. We are thankful for 

compassionate staff, strong leaders, 

and generous donors who make 

Magnolia Manor a unique retirement 

community.

BUENA VISTA 

Harvest Festival 

She’s not throwing it! 

She just won the Cake Walk. 

On October 1, 2011 the residents, 

staff and community members gathered 

at Magnolia Manor in Buena Vista 

to enjoy funnel cakes, hot dogs, 

hamburgers, sausages, popcorn, cake 

walks, a rummage sale, silent auction, 

and live entertainment. 

Thanks to all these community 

leaders who came and volunteered to 

make the 2011 Harvest Festival such 

a success! The Toomey Family gospel 

group along with several individuals, 

Rachel Brown, Linda Anthony, Tasha 

Snider, and Jackie Robinson shared 

their afternoon to sing beautiful 

songs for all to hear at the festival. 

This was all arranged by Linda 

Anthony. In the spirit of Christianity, 

the Tazwell Baptist Church cooked 

yummy funnel cakes for everyone to 

enjoy. The Magnolia Manor of Marion 

County Auxiliary held a Bake Sale and 

Cake Walk. All of the auxiliary’s proceeds 

go to their projects for the nursing 

home such as Christmas presents for 

every resident. Overall, the Festival 

raised $3,090! Be sure to mark your 

calendars for the 2012 event.

moultrie tailgating 

Moultrie residents made sure 

they didn’t miss out on the high 

school football action this year. They 

dressed up and showed up to cheer 

on the Colquitt County Packers on 

Friday nights at Magnolia Manor. The 

residents enjoyed the tailgate party! 

They ate the traditional food for a 

football game, hot dogs, boiled peanuts, 

and sodas. Teresa Newell, Magnolia 

Manor South Administrator, lead the 

residents in several “Packer” cheers. 

Lastly, they gathered for a picture to 

show their “Packer” pride. Their 

support helped the Packers overcome 

the Valdosta Wildcats and the Camden 

County Wildcats with two wins to 

send the Packers to the playoffs to 

play in the State Championship Game. 

The Packers gave it their all, but 

Grayson beat the Packers to go to the 

Semi-finals for the State Championship. 

Moultrie residents are still proud of 

the Packers who have made it to the 

play offs for the past 3 years. Go Pack!

News from Macon Magnolia Manor 

THANK YOU UNITED DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFEDERACY! 

The Col. Thomas Hardeman, Jr. 

Chapter of the United Daughters of 

the Confederacy rooted and planted 

these confederate roses all along the 

fence leading up to the Magnolia 

Manor office in Macon. They have 

now been pruned and are being 

rooted so more confederate roses will 

grace the Macon Campus next year.

Magnolia Manor Macon Campus! 

CUPCAKE WARS HELD AT MAGNOLIA MANOR MACON

of the Methodist Children’s Home were 

the judges for the 1st Magnolia Manor 

of Macon Cupcake War. Winners were 

chosen in taste, design, and originality. 

After tasting of the entries the 

cupcakes were sent to the Children’s 

Home for their residents to enjoy.

Exploring Your Creative Side.... 

There is something about sharing 

a talent or exploring your creative 

side. One way may be picking up a 

brush and painting on a canvas. A 

talent like this can alter your state of 

mind. It is a great way to ease feelings 

of stress. By putting all your attention 

on the brush strokes and the colors 

you use, you are introducing your 

body into a calmer, more focused state 

of awareness. Painting is also an outlet 

for self-expression. Sometimes, if you 

do not exactly know what to paint 

and you just let your instincts guide 

you, the end result is a piece of art 

that reflects your inner state of being. 

In fact, psychologists often use 

drawings and paintings to evaluate 

the mental and emotional condition 

of their subjects. 

In several studies, it was found 

that individuals who regularly paint 

tend to be less anxious, less prone to 

illness, and have a healthier sense of 

self-esteem than those who do not. It 

seems this is not just true for painting 

but for other art forms as well. Most 

individuals who are passionate about 

the arts and engage in creative activities 

seem to derive more satisfaction out 

of life and are happier in their personal 

relationships. Many will also discover 

a greater awareness of the beauty of 

nature through painting. 

For these reasons, Magnolia Manor 

emphasizes the importance of our 

Renaissance Programs on every 

campus. At Magnolia Manor South, 

residents believe it is never too late 

to become an artist. These residents 

attend an art class every Wednesday 

taught by a very talented lady named 

Myra Hurst. She is a local artist 

who enjoys teaching the residents to 

develop their creative side. Pictured

Magnolia Manor South residents.

The group enjoys sharing their talents 

with others especially at special times 

of the year like Christmas. The Age 

Beaters performed seven shows during 

the Christmas season, including a 

show for the Americus campus.

Brady hosted a presentation on 

Hungary for the Americus campus. 

Mrs. Brady shared artifacts, crafts, 

artwork, etc. from Hungary and her 

event was well-attended. She presented 

a video on the country and then 

wowed the residents with a huge 

selection of refreshments from a 

range of Hungarian treats to American 

delights! What a luxury for her to 

share her talent of the firsthand 

knowledge of her home country, 

Hungary.

2011 Christmas 

MACON 

Magnolia Manor of Macon 

had a Christmas Celebration for all 

the residents. They had a nice dinner 

with a choice of quail or blackened 

salmon with a shrimp cocktail. Over 

100 people came to delve in the 

delicious food! Harold Thomas played 

the saxophone as entertainment.

Light Tree on December 1st. The 

residents celebrated as the tree was lit 

and the spirit of Christmas was spread 

around their campus! Resident Donna 

McAllister had the honor of lighting 

the tree this year. 

The Christmas joy continued as the 

Family Council & Auxiliary Christmas 

Party was held on December 15th. 

Every resident received a Christmas 

gift from the funds raised at the 

Harvest Festival.

Americus Campus for Christmas.

hung garland and bows to decorate 

the entrances, set up spot lights, 

and set the reindeer out to light 

up Magnolia Manor in Americus. 

The residents enjoyed the bright 

and colorful decorations and say 

THANK YOU for filling their home 

with the joy of Christmas. 

MOULTRIE 


Magnolia Manor South in Moultrie 

displayed their beautiful nativity scene 

for everyone to see as they came in 

the front door. They hung wreaths all 

around and set up a Christmas tree. 

The residents were given every reason 

to be in the spirit!


St. Marys Campus had Santa Claus 

visit the residents during the Winter 

Wonder Land dinner. They had 2 

dinners serving about 60 people each 

night. Some say this was the best 

dinner in Camden County! Prime rib 

with rosemary mashed potatoes and 

julienne vegetables was served to all. 

Piano music was played as residents 

and guests enjoyed the dinner and 

visited with Santa.

St. Simons held their annual Light 

The Night on December 6th. The 

residents and community enjoyed the 

beautiful lights covering the campus. 

From poinsettias to soldiers, from snow 

men to Santa Claus, the Christmas 

spirit was all around Magnolia Manor 

St. Simons Island.

It is beyond amazing what the 

Christmas season brings to us. The 

birth of Jesus Christ, the love of family 

and friends, the gift of generosity and 

the joy of celebrating each of those are 

all things Christmas brings us each 

year. Only this year, those things were 

multiplied by fifty at Magnolia Manor 

on the Coast. 

On December 5th, Magnolia Manor 

on the Coast held its annual Resident 

Christmas Party in the third floor 

Dining Room, which was transformed 

into a gorgeous festival of Magnolia 

leaves, festive glass, and sparkling white 

lights. However, this year the gift was 

not simply the presence of more than 

a hundred residents and a dozen staff. 

This year the gift was extended to 

include fifty volunteers who spent 

the evening making sure residents 

felt love, compassion, adoration, and 

simply put… a good time. 

All because of the generous spirit 

of one of our caregivers, who spends 

as much time here on our campus as 

any employee, our residents had the 

time of their lives. Charity DeLoach 

approached the Administrator, Michelle 

Laidler, with an idea for bringing the 

community together to give Magnolia 

Manor residents the time of their lives. 

That one tiny conversation sparked 

the generosity and willingness of

dozens of people to help with the 

festivities. Charity began making phone 

calls and by the day of the Christmas 

Party had managed to get volunteers 

to generously donate decorations 

for the dining rooms, entrees for the 

buffet, professional photos for the 

residents, live entertainment, prizes 

for the gift drawings, and teddy bears 

and tea bulbs for every single resident 

residing on the Richmond Hill campus. 

Residents were most blessed, however, 

with the presence of dozens of children 

and parents who chose to spend their 

evening serving residents, handing out 

gifts, and even cleaning up afterwards. 

These children and parents were 

friends, family, and church members 

Charity asked to help. The tears of joy 

shed were countless and the love felt 

that evening was indescribable. 

Chaplain Madison Morgan attended 

the event, blessed the food, and 

introduced the first of many great 

performances. Although our Resident 

Christmas Party is an important 

annual event greatly anticipated by 

our residents, this year it was so much 

more. It was a reminder of the love we 

feel for one another, the laughter we 

experience with each other, and the 

companionship we need in order to 

continue living our lives as healthy 

and happy as possible. 

Children volunteered to help with the 

event and to entertain, as well. 


The True Meaning of Christmas 

COLUMBUS 

The month of December was very 

exciting at Magnolia Manor of 

Columbus because of the numerous 

individuals and groups who remembered 

the residents with gifts, performances 

and visits. Residents, staff and 

community members celebrated the 

birth of Jesus the Messiah by 

worshipping together. Chaplain Cindy 

Bennett led three services on Christmas 

Eve and four services on Christmas 

Day. Staff members Salena Brown and 

Louise Bush and family members such 

as a resident’s grandson participated 

by lighting the Advent Candles and 

the Christ Candle. The services were 

filled with Scripture readings, prayers 

and Christmas carols acknowledging 

the miracle of God’s love in the birth 

of Jesus who came to save the world. 

AMERICUS 

Magnolia Manor of Americus 

celebrated the birth of Christ with a 

live nativity and carols. The holy family 

was portrayed by Adam, Andrea, & 

William Walker. Mitch Wall had the 

role of the Shepherd. The Three Wise 

Men were Daron Butler, Cliff Pilcher, 

and Jake Griffith. Residents and 

community enjoyed celebrating the 

true meaning of Christmas.

Employees 

Employee loyalty can be defined as 

employees being committed to the 

success of the organization and 

believing that working for this

Not only do they plan to remain with 

the organization, it is about WANTING 

to be there. Loyal employees are very 

important as the employees are the 

backbone of the company. They are 

the hands and feet who deliver the 

care at Magnolia Manor.

valued and appreciated. It shows in 

how employees take pride in their 

job and truly care about the residents 

at Magnolia Manor. Value is created 

by satisfied, loyal, and productive 

employees. Employee satisfaction,

that enable employees to deliver results 

to customers. Magnolia Manor works 

hard to give employees the training 

and guidance they need to provide 

the best care for our residents. This 

in turn gives employees the feeling 

of accomplishment and satisfaction 

with their work. 

Employee loyalty is displayed at 

Magnolia Manor through the 

celebration of several long time 

employees who dedicated their entire 

working years to Magnolia Manor 

and are now retiring. Magnolia Manor 

leaders and residents are grateful for 

dedicated, loyal employees who are a 

part of the Magnolia Manor family. 


Earnestine Mercer, Director of Laundry at the 

Americus Nursing Center, retired after 44 dedicated 

years. Pictured above is Mr. & Mrs. Mercer. In the 

photo on the opposite page is Hill Fort, Sr. VP for 

Operations, Mrs. Mercer, Mark Todd, President & 

CEO, and Susie Fussell, Nursing Center Administrator. 

Above is a picture from Helen Veal’s 

farewell party. Mrs. Veal has been a 

wonderful employee at Magnolia Manor 

in Moultrie for 10 1/2 years. She was a 

dedicated and loyal employee who will 

be missed by everyone at Magnolia Manor. 

Helen Higgins, a Resident Care Assistant, retired from the 

Retirement Center in Americus. To the left are the Housekeeping 

ladies that will dearly miss Mrs. Higgins. To the right are 

Magnolia Manor staff and several residents who attended 

Mrs. Higgins farewell party. Thanks for your 32 years of 

commitment to Magnolia Manor, Mrs. Higgins!
