D o Košíc sa sypali slová uznania, vzrástla
prestíž jedného z najstarších maratónskych miest.
Kedysi boli v Európe Košice, za oceánom
Boston. Dlhé roky sa kvality svetových vytrvalcov merali
len podľa úspechu či neúspechu na týchto
maratónoch.
"V medzinárodných atletických kruhoch má
košický maratón skvelé meno. Bezpochyby je to
najväčší a najdôležitejší maratón v celej Európe, ak nie
aj na celom svete," tvrdil v povojnovej ére člen
Holandskej kráľovskej ľahkoatletickej únie G. Krämer.
"Košický medzinárodný maratón je európskym
Bostonom," pridal sa generálny sekretár fínskeho zväzu
Konnonen.
Košice boli výzvou pre olympijských víťazov
i tvorcov najlepších svetových výkonov. Ich maratón
však nerobili len slávne mená na štartovej čiare, ale
aj jedinečná tradícia a hlavne ovzdušie, v akom sa bojovalo
o vavríny. Plný štadión i ulice s Košičanmi, v tú
nedeľu vždy akosi slávnostnejšie naladenými. Aj pre
cigánsku kapelu na vyčačkanej obrátke bola nesmierna
česť fidlikať bežcom do rytmu.
Príklad Medzinárodného maratónu mieru
priťahoval a budil túžbu dosiahnuť niečo podobné
aj inde. V holandskom Enschede, maďarskom Szegede,
poľskom Debne a Otwocku, nemeckom Chemnitzi
(vtedy Karl-Marx-Stadte), ukrajinskom Užhorode.
Všetky partnerské maratóny si odniesli myšlienku zrodu
z Košíc.

Words of recognition flooded into Košice,
and the prestige of one of the oldest marathon cities
grew.
Once upon a time, there was Košice in Europe,
and Boston over the ocean. For many years the quality
of the world’s long-distance runners was measured only
in terms of their success or failure in these two
marathons.
“In international athletics circles the Košice
Marathon has a superb reputation. It is without a doubt
the biggest and most important marathon in the whole
of Europe, if not in the whole world,” claimed G. Krämer,
a member of the Dutch Royal Light-Athletics Union,
during the post-war era. “The Košice Peace Marathon
is the European Boston,” added Konnonen, General
Secretary of the Finnish Association.
The Košice Marathon has always been
a challenge for Olympic victors and the world’s best
time-setters. It has not been made what it is just
by famous names on the starting-line, however, but also
by its unique tradition and above all by the atmosphere
in which the victor’s laurels are fought for. The stadium
and the city streets full of Košice people, always somehow
more festively-spirited on that October Sunday.
