Tu sa zatiaľ nespoliehali na obdiv a uznanie iných a napredovali cestou, akú si žiadala moderná maratónska doba. Tak postupne v Košiciach pustili na trať v roku 1980 ženy, o desať rokov neskôr vozičkárov, ujala sa aj myšlienka polmaratónu, ba aj minimaratónu, kde sa môžu maratónskej atmosféry plnými dúškami nadýchať celé rodiny, bežať môžu rodičia s deťmi, starý otec s vnúčikom. Prosto, Medzinárodný maratón mieru má všetky atribúty behu pre všetkých. V prvý októbrový víkend sa v Košiciach hovorí maratónskou rečou. Aj v dobrých partnerských vzťahoch s nemeckým Wuppertalom majú prsty maratónci. V roku 1988 prebehli odtiaľ až do Košíc štafetovým spôsobom 1765 kilometrov. Diaľkový Beh priateľstva mal reprízu v roku 1990, tentoraz opačným smerom. Od tohto roku už zastrešuje košický maratón, i všetko čo s ním súvisí, novovzniknutý Maratónsky klub Košice. Vzal si do vienka aj organizáciu diaľkového behu z Berlína do Košíc v roku 1998 a o rok neskôr sa podieľal s maďars-kou stranou na vzniku pretekov v ultramaratóne Košice - Miskolc. Wuppertal-Košice. Vzdialenosť medzi nimi niekoľkokrát merali i bežecké štafety oboch miest. Wuppertal and Košice. The distance between them has been measured several times by relay teams from both cities. turning-point in former years too it was an unusual honour to fiddle to the rhythm of the runners. The example of the Košice Peace Marathon attracted others and awoke the desire to accomplish something similar elsewhere too. At Enschede in Holland, Szeged in Hungary, Debna and Otwock in Poland, Chemnitz in Germany (then Karl-Marx-Stadt) and Užhorod in Ukraine. All these partner marathons took the idea of their birth from Košice. Here in the meantime people did not bask complacently in the admiration and recognition of others, but advanced along the path required by the modern marathon age. One by one the innovations came to Košice: in 1980 women were allowed onto the course, and wheelchair racers ten years later, then the idea of the half-marathon took hold, and the mini-marathon too, in which whole families can fill their lungs with the marathon atmosphere, parents running with their children, grandfather with grandson. Simply speaking, the Košice Peace Marathon has every attribute of an all-comers’ run. The first weekend of October in Košice everybody speak marathonese. Marathoners were also involved in the development of good partnership relations with Wuppertal in Germany. In 1988 they ran all the way from there to Košice, 1765 kilometres in relay style. The long-distance Friendship Run was repeated in 1990, this time in the opposite direction. Since that year the Košice Marathon and everything connected with it has been covered by the newly-formed Košice Marathon Club. As part of its dowry the Club also took over the organization of the long-distance run from Berlin to Košice in 1998, and worked together with its Hungarian counterparts a year later to set up the ultra-marathon race from Košice to Miskolc. 125
K tradičným aktivitám jeho členov patrí mapovanie významných svetových maratónov, spojené s aktívnou účasťou v štartovom poli. Tak sa pretekári Maratónskeho klubu zaradili do riavy bežcov počas storočnice bostonského maratónu, na pamiatku im zostali štartové čísla aj z Paríža, Monaka, Londýna, Turína či Viedne. Ručička kompasu teraz smeruje do New Yorku. Zároveň so vznikom Maratónskeho klubu prijali Medzinárodný maratón mieru za člena Asociácie medzinárodných maratónskych a cestných behov AIMS a je aj oficiálnym podujatím Medzinárodnej atletickej federácie IAAF. Spoločenský a organizačný úspech majstrovstiev sveta v polmaratóne zaručil Košiciam usporiadanie ďalšieho významného podujatia - štokholmské zasadnutie Asociácie medzinárodných maratónskych a cestných behov (AIMS) rozhodlo, že v predvečer 75. výročia Medzinárodného maratónu mieru dajú si u nás rande účastníci 12. Svetového kongresu tejto organizácie. Ďalší impulz pre neobyčajné maratónske mesto na prahu nového milénia. One of the traditional activities of Club members is mapping the important marathons around the world with a view to active participation in the starting line-up at certain events. In this way several Marathon Club members joined the torrent of runners at the centenary of the Boston Marathon, and they have kept starting numbers as souvenirs from Paris, Monaco, London, Turin and Vienna. Now the compass needle points towards New York. At the same time as the Marathon Club was established, the Košice Peace Marathon was accepted as a member of AIMS, the Association of International Marathons and Road Races, and it has also become a permitted IAAF event. The social and organizational success of the World Half Marathon Championships has guaranteed Košice the right to hold another important event – the Stockholm session of AIMS decided that on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the KPM, the participants of the 12th World AIMS Congress have a date here in Košice. A further impulse for this distinguished marathon city on the threshold of the new millennium.
