The next two vehicles, 36 & 37, are the property of a gentleman and are being offered for sale due to retirement
36 BAROUCHE by Stocken & Storey of Halkin Street, London, believed
to have been built between 1850-90; painted deep Royal blue with
gold lining, the interior having blue buttoned leather upholstery
and a blue carpet. A classical and stylish original carriage which
is suitable for a single horse or pair, having both shafts and pole,
which has been used by the vendor for weddings and private
hire until a year ago, so it is in good, working order having been
well maintained, although the hood and cover require attention.
Attractive features include the folding seatback to the front which
partially encloses the passengers when travelling, the elegant curve
to the body, echoed by the front mudguards, and pump handles to the rear. It has been in the vendor’s
possession for 30 years, after being owned by a Mrs Kenyon for some 40 years, she having purchased it from
a gentleman who gave carriage rides round Windsor Park. Over the years the wheels have been refurbished,
with new channels and rubbers fitted, any work being carried out either by the late Mr Willison of Hockcliffe,
a wheelwright, or the Oxford Carriage Company. A pair of 21ins square pattern brass trim lamps with
bevelled glass, which are thought to be as old as the carriage, will be offered separately
37 MARKET CART, thought to be circa 1900, by Jones, Li-Llanrwst,
Wales to suit 15-2 hh and over; the body painted racing green
lined black, on black wheels and unders, with fawn cushions. The
body has a drop tailboard and adjustable seat, and has been mostly
rebuilt, the 57ins wheels have new channels and rubbers fitted by
the late Mr Willson of Hockcliffe and the new 6ft 3ins shafts were
fitted by Fenix Carriages. A good example of its type which is well
balanced, rides well and has been owned by the vendor for 30
years
38 BRADFORD FLAT CART, to suit a horse; in a typically eye-catching
finish of bright colours, mainly yellow and brown, with gold and
multi-coloured highlights and scrolls. The neat dash bears a grey
horse head, all mounted with whitemetal furniture, with a small
footrest in front of the bench seat
39 CHAIR BACK GIG of English origin, on 48ins, 16-spoke wheels;
smartly finished in black, with straw yellow lining and good quality
buttoned Bedford cord upholstery. A pretty vehicle, with a ‘well
bottom’ footwell which has been shown in the USA and England
