including Drag, Spider Phaeton, Mail Phaeton
and various Breaks, Tandem Carts, etc., plate
sizes 11ins x 8.5ins, in original decorative
board covers, all in good condition

1636 Schmidt, Conrad (F.A.Glaeser), Varnish Makers
to the Queen, Stratford Road, London: The
Coach Maker’s Pattern Book containing
22 plates depicting 51 superb coloured
illustrations of painting designs for spokes,
each spoke with details of colour and design
which are 14ins long x 4ins wide, length of
spokes 12ins x 2ins. Book is bound in green
cloth boards with gilt lettering and the
Royal Arms. The reverse of each plate has
advertising and testimonials, all in excellent
condition (crease to front board)
1637 An original copy of Hand Book for Coach
Painters by William Simpson and edited
by G.A.Thrupp, 1894 bound in green cloth
boards; in excellent condition
1638 Bates, A.: Motor and Carriage Painting, A
Practical Manual, a scarce, original copy
dated 1915, bound in red cloth; in excellent
condition. Inscribed inside is a piece from
the Health & Safety in the Workplace ‘it
is suggested whilst working with lead
based materials to “wear a handkerchief
of the mouth and to thoroughly wash your
moustache before eating”’!
1639 Felton, William, Coach Maker: A Treatise on
Carriages, four parts bound in two volumes,
2nd edition 1796 containing 60 plates of
carriages, harness, fittings and accessories,
etc., seven plates folding, re-bound in half
calf, 8vo and all in good condition. The
illustrations depict designs for most of
the principal carriages of the day, they
also show illustrations of springs, perches,
cloths, lamps, trunks, hat boxes and types
of harness. The most comprehensive book
on carriages, harness, construction, prices,
