CCI Chapter Reports

Huronia
Spring and autumn are by far the
busiest seasons for CCI chapters on
the course and seminar circuit and
in this regard, CCI–Huronia doesn’t
disappoint.
Another successful Basic Directors’
Course has just concluded. Although
a relatively small class, they
were an enthusiastic lot. Some participants
travelled from “points north”
such as Midland and Huntsville. It’s
possible that in the near future we
will run this course in the northern or
western sector of our chapter.
Huronia is in the midst of visiting
several locations in our Chapter to
introduce the latest condominium
administrative and management
tool: the Risk Management Protocol.
Think of the Protocol as a defensive
driving course for condominiums.
Years of planning have gone into
developing this useful tool in response
to escalating concerns about
insurance issues from condominium
directors throughout Canada. These
seminars will continue in October
and/or November.
Once again, our chapter is pleased
to host a President’s Club seminar
with renowned condominium lawyer
Gerry Hyman. Gerry will discuss
aspects of one of the most misunderstood
sections of the Condominium
Act, sec. 98. Our “Club” gatherings
continue to attract larger audiences
from near and far.
The Board is pleased to welcome
our newest director, Francis Tavares.
Francis is a highly respected member
of her condo corporation and works
in the insurance sector.

September 5, for CCI–Huronia’s
AGM/Cruise on Lake Simcoe. It’s
shaping up to be the best yet.

Toronto and Area
The Toronto and Area CCI Chapter
had an extremely busy spring session
– holding numerous courses and
other events. All three levels of CCI
courses – the Condo 101, Basic and
Advanced Course were offered in
Association of Condominium Managers (ACMO)
This program has been developed specifically for both
individuals who are new and who are currently working
in the condominium field. Condominium management is
a growth industry throughout the province. Participants
will learn how to deal with people, buildings and recordkeeping.
A combination of theory and practical problems
are incor porated into all courses
providing opportunities for
participants to develop their
knowledge, skills and abilities
in managing effective condominiums.
In cooperation with ACMO,
Mohawk College will offer
the following Association
of Condominium Manager
Program courses in a Distance
Education (Internet) format.
• Introduction to Condominium Law (CDM01)
• Physical Building Management (CDM02)
• Financial Planning for Condominium Managers
(CDM03)
• Condominium Administration and Human
Relations (CDM04)
Participants require access to the Internet.
All specific software and
course materials are provided.
This program is a valuable
education step in the process
of obtaining the Registered
Condominium Management
(R.C.M.) designation.
Registration for Fall
courses starting in September,
2008, begins August 11.

the spring and attendance at all three
course offerings was strong. Our
thanks and appreciation is extended
to the numerous volunteer instructors
participating in these courses.
A session on Asbestos Management
Plans was arranged by CCI and
was presented at the 2008 Springfest
show by Dr. Gina Cody and
Robert Reid both from Construction
Control Inc. CCI Toronto also
participated as an exhibitor in the
trade show area of Springfest, where
volunteers Robert Buckler, Bob Girard
and Gina Cody met with many
delegates who were interested to
learn more about CCI.
CCI Toronto hosted a networking
dinner on April 12 at the Novotel
Hotel in North York. The event,
which drew over 40 condo Presidents
and Board members, offered lively
discussion surrounding the concerns,
success stories and challenges of various
condominium corporations.
The other highlight of the 2008
spring season was the CCI National
semi-annual meetings and conference
held this year in Vancouver. The
Toronto and Area Chapter was well
represented with several directors
attending the educational sessions
and numerous networking opportunities
the event offered. CAI, the
US counterpart to CCI also hosted a
conference in the spring of 2008 – in
Orlando, Florida. CCI Toronto was
fortunate to send several delegates
who learned about the latest trends,
ideas, and developments in the US
condominium market.

It is busy months ahead in the
condominium communities of London
as maintenance and replacement
projects get underway.
Our chapter’s year of education
wound down with the final seminar
“There are no stupid questions!” on
May 13. Our legal experts joined
us to address common issues that
face our communities. As always we
are grateful for the expertise of our
presenters. Thanks to Jeffrey Bell,

Saunders and Barry Scott for a very
stimulating evening.
And so begins our quest for topics
for the year ahead. Dates have
been booked and confirmed for our
Annual General Meeting on September
23, 2008, followed by our annual
Condominium Course over two Saturdays
October 25 and November 8;
and we await confirmation of our
seminar dates for November 18,
2008, January 20, 2009, March 17,
2009 and May 12, 2009. Your suggestions
are always welcome.
Membership renewal invoices for
the July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009 have
been sent out to the contact person
of record. We thank all of our members
for their timely attention to
membership with CCI.

Golden Horseshoe
The summer months have finally
come to the Golden Horseshoe
Chapter of CCI. Given the winter we
all shared it was a welcome surprise
to finally watch the spring snow melt
into the summer sun. Despite the
well-earned sunny days, the Golden
Horseshoe Chapter has been very
active, and has many exciting plans
ahead. The Level 100 courses were
held on April 5. Both sides enjoyed
strong attendance and the Chapter
is deeply appreciative to the guest
speakers that provided their time.
Not to be forgotten were Mark
Shedden’s patented diagrams, and
multi-page hand-drawn diagrams,
which were enjoyed by all.
Looking forward, the Golden
Horseshoe Chapter will be having
its annual general meeting on September
18, 2008 at the Royal Botanical
Gardens. Following the AGM,
the Chapter is delighted to be hosting
a legal forum entitled “Staying
Out of Court”. Registration and
details will be posted on our website
www.ghcci.org. The Level 200
programs shall be held in Kitchener
and in Burlington both on October
18 and 25. Any members wishing to
propose a topic or speak at either are
welcome to submit their ideas.
Finally, the Chapter is working
proactively with the City of Burlington
to review the municipal taxation
of condominiums. Led by CCI
chapter president Kim Coulter, the
City of Burlington staff are currently
considering a full financial review
for Council’s consideration. Great
work, Kim!
