Endocrinology and Metabolism. He currently sees adult patients with types
1 and 2 diabetes, as well as general endocrine problems at the VA
Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinic. Moates has coauthored manuscripts
for peer-reviewed publications including the Journal of Biological
Chemistry, Molecular Endocrinology, Genomics, Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences, Molecular Pharmacology, and Diabetes. He lives in
Indian Springs, Alabama.
1991
MATTHEW TIERNAN SPEYER has been elected chairman of the
Department of Surgery at Skyline Medical Center for 2003-05. He also
was appointed clinical professor of otolaryngology at Vanderbilt
University. He lives in Nashville, Tennessee.
1996
ZIPPORAH KRISHNASAMI was appointed assistant professor of the
Department of Nephrology by David G. Warnock, M.D., professor and
director of the UAB Division of Nephrology. She previously completed a
nephrology fellowship rotation at Lilongwe Central Hospital in Malawi,
Africa, and was in private practice in Baltimore, Maryland, at the largest private
nephrology practice in the mid-Atlantic area. Krishnasami lives in
Hoover, Alabama, and is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology.
1997
JON D. HOLMES was recently inducted into the American College of
Surgeons and has joined in practice with Dennis “Mark” Clark (class of
1980) in Birmingham, Alabama. He lives in the Birmingham area and
specializes in maxillofacial radiology.
1998
MARLA BLACK MORGAN was appointed assistant professor by Ray L.
Watts, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Neurology. Morgan
completed a neurology residency at UAB, serving as chief resident, and a clinical
neurophysiology residency. Her clinical interest and current research focus
is on neuromuscular disorders, such as myasthenia gravis, diabetic polyneuropathy,
and demyelinating neuropathy. She received the Samuel Clements
Little Award in neurology, the UASOM Dean’s Scholarship (4 years), and the
Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society George W. Gore Merit Scholarship.
She lives in Alabaster, Alabama.
2000
CATHY AVERY SKINNER has moved to Austin, Texas, to complete a
one-year fellowship in obstetrics, after completing her residency at
Tuscaloosa Family Practice.
2001 (Resident)
CATHERINE L. DANIEL was appointed assistant professor of the
Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology by Robert P.
Kimberly, M.D., professor and director. Daniel did her residency in internal
medicine at UAB from 1999-2001 and a fellowship from 2001-03 in
rheumatology. She lives in Homewood, Alabama, and specializes in
rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.
CHRISTINE LONG CHOAT AND DENNIS EDWARD CHOAT, class
of 1992, announce the birth of their second son, Aiden Rye, born on September
12, 2003. He joins his brother, Jack Morgan, who turned two on September 6,
2003. Christine specializes in internal medicine, and Dennis specializes in colon
and rectal surgery. They live in Peachtree City, Georgia.
TOLLY WILLIAMS GARRETT, class of 1994, and her husband, Jim,
are delighted to announce the birth of their daughter, Aberly Ann Garrett,
born June 2, 2003. Tolly’s specialty is pediatrics, and she works with Coastal
Children’s Clinic in Maysville, North Carolina. Her husband, Jim, is a marine
pilot stationed in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
CATHY AVERY SKINNER, class of 2000, and her husband, Shannon,
announce the birth of their son, Tyler, born April 12, 2003. Cathy lives in
Austin, Texas, and specializes in family medicine.
BELATED BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS
SALLY A. WRIGHT AND DAVID WRIGHT, class of 1993,
announce the birth of their daughter, Madelyn Marie, born on December
30, 2002. Sally is currently not working due to the high cost of medical
malpractice insurance in her field of pediatric emergency medicine. She
also is busy raising three children. David continues to work at Emory and
Grady Hospitals in emergency medicine and does brain injury research.
They live in Atlanta, Georgia.
RHEA HSU AND DAVE JENKINS, class of 1994, announce the birth of
their son, Aidan, born on October 10, 2002. Rhea and Dave both are in private
practice in internal medicine at Carolina Medical Consultants in Rock Hill,
South Carolina.
WILLIAM CHARLES “CHARLIE” BRASWELL III, class of 1996,
and his wife, Mary Lee, announce the birth of their son, Blake Braswell, on
December 19, 2002. Charlie relocated his practice to UAB Medical West
on April 21, 2003. He lives in Hoover, Alabama, and specializes in general
surgery.
RAJ VARMA, class of 2001, and his wife, Michele, announce the birth of
their daughter, Natalie Marie Varma, born on November 1, 2002. Raj is a
Navy flight surgeon at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
He lives in Chesapeake, Virginia, and specializes in general surgery.
