Page THE UAW LOCAL 5960 REPORT August 1, 2012 Orion Assembly shop chairman Hello Brothers and Sisters, WELCOME BACK Welcome back from the downtime. I hope everyone is doing well as we start the second half of the year. We start back at a time when sales of our vehicles are doing well. The Buick Verano is flying off the dealer lots and the Chevrolet Sonic Mike Dunn has quickly become the best-selling vehicle in its segment. In fact, sales are strong enough to generate some Friday overtime going forward. NEW COACHES Let me welcome our new GMS Coaches: Benjamin Bieber, Paint Shop, Day Shift; Night Shift, we have Stephanie Farrell in the Trim Shop and Material Dept; Denise Hufford will coach GMS in Body and Paint; and Dewitt (Mac) McGowan will coach the Chassis Department, Quality and Final Process. Please join me in welcoming these new coach/trainers. We can now give the Team Leaders and Team Members on the Evening Shift the assistance that they need to fully take advantage of the GMS principles. PERSONNEL MOVEMENT We have had a number of our members who have taken transfers to Flint North, Flint South and Flint Stamping. As we backfill these positions, the Bargaining Team is working hard to make some additional Temporary Members permanent. CONGRATS TO THE BIKE TEAM As of the writing of this article, our Make-A-Wish Bike Team is preparing for their 300-mile ride from Northern Michigan to the MIS Speedway grounds. This special group of dedicated individuals commit themselves to excellence each year, and this year is no different. With your help, they were able to raise over $16,000 for the Make-A- Wish children. This is just an incredible way to help ill children and their families through their most difficult times. My hat is off to this high-performance team...great work! LABOR DAY I know it seems like summer just started, but Labor Day is just around the corner. I hope to see you all at the September union meeting and at the Labor Day Parade. This Labor Day parade will put the presidential election into high gear and we need to re-elect Barack Obama. Just think for a moment...where would you be working right now if Barack Obama had not been elected? It would not be at Orion Assembly because GM would have been liquidated and who knows what John Mc Cain would have said when the president of the UAW called to suggest bringing a small car back from overseas. He might not have even taken the call! We need to support politicians who support us. Barack Obama is in our corner...the other fellow wanted to “Let Detroit go bankrupt.” The schedule on Labor Day week will be 10.7 hours, 10.7 hours and 10.6 hours. August 1, 2012 THE UAW LOCAL 5960 REPORT Page Chevrolet ranked highest in three J.D. Power and Associates Apeal Study Segments Chevrolet has more segment award recipients in the 2012 J.D. Power and Associates Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study than any other brand, with Chevrolet Volt, Sonic and Avalanche customers praising their purchases after three months of ownership. The Volt electric car with extended range, the Sonic subcompact, as well as the Avalanche were each ranked segment award recipients. “This stamp of approval from our owners is the best kind of recognition we could hope for and drives us to ensure all of the vehicles in the Chevrolet lineup meet the highest expectations,” said Chris Perry, Chevrolet vice president of global marketing. The APEAL study is based on responses from more than 74,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2012 model year vehicles surveyed at 90 days of ownership. The study examines how gratifying a new vehicle is to own and drive based on more than 80 vehicle attributes. The J.D. Power APEAL Study is a good indication Orion Assembly and UAW Local 5960 know how to “Build It Like We Own It.” WHAT IF SOMEONE ASKS?: As the November elections inch nearer and nearer, it’s likely that GM will be the subject of campaign issues, especially given our recent past. As a GM employee, you have access to key facts on important issues that touch GM, and can help clear up any misconceptions you might come across in your networks and social circles. Two very different administrations both recognized the importance of the auto industry to our economy, and had the courage to act. The auto industry is adding jobs and driving the economy again. GM employs 77,000 people in the U.S. and 205,000 people globally. Since the successful IPO, we announced $7.1 billion invested in U.S. facilities in the past two years to create or retain 17,800 jobs. Currently, there are no outstanding loans between the U.S. Treasury and General Motors. The U.S. Treasury is one of about 530,000 owners of GM stock. The Treasury will sell its GM stake. When is anybody’s guess (we have no say in the matter). OFF TO SCHOOL IN A NEW SONIC: Deb and Ron Mallot (Deb is a Team Leader on the Engine Line in Chassis Dept.) recently bought their daughter, Melissa, a new Sonic to drive while attending Central Michigan University. Ron drove the car a lot before giving it to Melissa and he was impressed. He was getting over 40 MPG on the highway and even in city traffic he was averaging 30 MPG. Deb and Ron both agree that the Sonic is a great first car for a college kid. Deb says, “The shifting is easier to use than my husband’s Mini Cooper.” (Melissa learned to drive a stick in the Mini), Melissa says, “It shifts like butter.” One of the features that Deb likes is the built-in delay when shifting on a hill. Deb said, “Personally I always hated that when I drove a stick and, of course, as a parent I love all the airbags that the car has. If more kids knew that driving a stick was this easy, I think we would be selling a lot more. Maybe we should offer to area high schools a Sonic for the students to learn to drive a stick. People are afraid to drive a stick; they think it’s a pain in the city and stop and go driving, but if they knew how easy the Sonic is to shift I think they would be surprised. I am very proud that I played a part in building such a great car. My co-workers and I are doing a great job.” Melissa wanted everyone to know the things that she liked best about her new Sonic. Things that I like: The color, the new car smell, the gas mileage, the cup holders in the door (although you can’t crank the window with a large cup in there). I like the shifting, it’s very smooth and easy and the feature where you have to pull up (on the shifter) to put it into reverse is very reassuring to me. All the trunk and back seat space is nice. Also, I love that it is a hatchback. It is such a cute car and very much me. Thank you, guys!
