PRIOR TO THIS YEAR,
IT WAS IN 1997 THAT
MSCHE LAST SENT
AN ACCREDITATION TEAM
TO VISIT AND EVALUATE
UNION COUNTY
COLLEGE.
At that time The College was first embarking on using technology
to deliver educational services through distance learning, whether
it was through videotaped telecourses or later through online
instruction delivered via computer. A decade ago this type of
instruction was in its infancy at UCC. Since then, UCC has been
one of the leaders among the State’s community colleges in providing
distance education courses. This year 154 courses
were offered via distance education and the popularity
of courses delivered in this manner was evidenced by
the enrollment of 2,577 in distance education sections.
The importance of technology in providing
instruction and student support services to
students cannot be underestimated.
Without doubt, the network has emerged as the single
most important technology trend, because of its ability to
facilitate communication with colleagues as well as with
information resources. Improved bandwidth between
campuses and to the Internet allows the College to fully
realize the benefits of the advanced technology already
deployed. The goal is to provide students, faculty, and
staff with access to all appropriate information resources, whether they are
voice, video or data from any campus location, and eventually from any
remote device with access to the College. This is the true essence of
client-centered computing, telecommuting, and distance learning.
The students attending Union County College demand greater access to
technological resources. New Jersey has become one of the technological
centers of the country. UCC must respond by implementing
programs that include dynamic teaching and learning environments
for students and faculty, as well as College staff and administration.
The College has followed its vision of using technology to strengthen
the productivity of the entire College community. UCC continues to
increase IT support for the faculty/staff community,
including adjunct faculty, by continuing
to implement new and updated technology
training courses, utilizing the IT
faculty/staff computer training lab.
All students (credit and non-credit) are now
automatically given a College student computer
account with an MS Exchange/Outlook
mailbox. This enables every student access
to the UCC network from any computer lab,
as well as email access from on or off campus.
Over 19,000 student computer accounts
are active on any given day.
