Submissions for 2014 Edition For The Human Touch 153
Welcome to The Human Touch 2013 – the sixth volume of our annual anthology
of prose, poetry, graphic art and photography contributed by the students, staff,
faculty, alumni and friends of the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.
Nobel Laureate, Heinrich Boll, once remarked that “behind every word a whole world
is hidden that must be imagined.” The writers and artists who have contributed to this
publication have offered us myriad and magical worlds to imagine and enjoy, to discover
and appreciate. Moreover, in the process of our imagining the hidden worlds behind
these words and images, we are also silently joining with others similarly engaged.
It is the mission of the Arts and Humanities in Healthcare Program to realize the universal
appeal of the arts and humanities and their power to connect student and teacher,
patient and professional, citizen and artist, benefactor and institution. The Human Touch
serves as both a tangible and beautiful means of making such connections.
I am especially grateful to Dr. Henry Claman for his unwavering commitment to the
arts and humanities at CU and his incredible generosity to our program. On behalf
of the editorial board, I also want to thank and congratulate our 2013 Editor-in-Chief,
Jacque Linton, who graduates from the School of Medicine in May. She leaves behind
many friends and colleagues who admire her devotion to literature and who marvel
at her surgical skills. Jacque is our own budding Richard Selzer, the most well-known
writer-surgeon in the United States, and we are looking forward to applauding her
future accomplishments.
