(contractors, visitors, members of the public, etc.) and designated staff are available on the SHE
Section website.
5.14 Flammable Materials, Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres
The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmosphere Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) set minimum
requirements for the protection of workers from fire and explosion risks related to dangerous
substances and potentially explosive atmospheres. It covers the use and storage of substances such
as petroleum products, flammable liquids (e.g. paints, varnishes, solvents, etc.), gases and certain
types of dust that are potentially explosive (e.g. wood dust). Further information on DSEAR is
available on the SHE Section website.
5.15 Food Safety
Food safety policies and procedures have been developed and adopted at the University in order to
meet legislative requirements and industry best practice. Catering staff are provided with equipment,
information, instruction and training to ensure that tasks are performed in a hygienic manner. Food
safety performance is proactively managed with performance measuring via monitoring and audit
regimes.
5.16 Housekeeping
All corridors and walkways must be kept clear of obstructions unless otherwise agreed with the
University Safety, Health & Environment Manager or the Director of Facilities Management. Any
unauthorised obstructions must be notified immediately to the relevant Building Manager who will
arrange for immediate removal.
All working areas must also be kept clean and tidy to minimise the risk of fire, slip, trip and fall
incidents. Unless special arrangements are in place, the individual creating the hazard must restore
the situation when the work has been completed or at the end of the class, whichever is sooner.
Excess materials which are toxic or a fire hazard must be returned to a storage area as soon as
possible. Spillages of liquids must be cleared up immediately to eliminate the possibility of slipping
accidents.
5.17 Infection Control
The University has procedures in place to ensure incidents involving the risk of blood borne infection
from sharps/needle stick injuries and contamination of cuts or abrasions; mucous membrane in eyes
and/or mouth with blood/body fluids are minimised.
These procedures include the safe disposal of contaminated sharps/used needles, etc., and the
cleaning of spillages of blood, vomit and excreta. Further information is available on the SHE
Section website.
5.18 Ionising Radiation
Working with ionising radiation is strictly controlled under the requirements of the Ionising Radiations
Regulations 1999. The storage and disposal of radioactive materials is strictly controlled by the
Radioactive Substances Act 1993.
The University has in place suitable and sufficient procedures to ensure the safe handling, storage
and use of radioactive materials. These are incorporated within the Local Rules (which are a
statutory requirement of the Regulations). Monitoring and authorising the use of radioactive materials
and X-ray radiation is performed by the Radiation Protection Officer and the Radiation Protection
Supervisors.
