ONLINE LEARNING AT THE UNIVERSITY<br />

OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA<br />

UDC <strong>of</strong>fers traditional face-to-face, online, and hybrid/blended courses. Fully<br />

online courses are currently <strong>of</strong>fered in <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Arts and Sciences, School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Business and Public Administration, and <strong>the</strong> Community College, while<br />

hybrid/blended courses are more widely found across <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. All <strong>of</strong><br />

UDC’s online courses <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong> same high quality and rigor as traditional<br />

face-to-face or hybrid/blended courses and use Blackboard 9.1 as <strong>the</strong>ir course<br />

management system.<br />

Regardless <strong>of</strong> a course format (online or hybrid), <strong>the</strong> online learning experiences<br />

will be innovative and collaborative. The virtual classroom experience is<br />

not self-paced or correspondence-based. Ra<strong>the</strong>r, online courses demand weekly<br />

or daily interaction. Students should expect to be actively engaged in deliberation,<br />

discussion and collaboration. All work will be submitted and delivered<br />

electronically by <strong>the</strong> deadlines established by <strong>the</strong> respective pr<strong>of</strong>essors.<br />

Rigorous and rewarding, online courses are equitable to traditional courses,<br />

and learning expectations are <strong>the</strong> same. Students must set aside time each<br />

day to read, participate and submit postings or assignments. The amount <strong>of</strong><br />

time needed for student participation will depend upon <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> course as well as technological capacity. Online learning requires motivation,<br />

self-discipline and a strong ability for time management. Online learners<br />

should log into <strong>the</strong>ir course(s) on <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> semester.<br />

information may be found in <strong>the</strong> Course Guide Schedule <strong>of</strong> Classes. The<br />

registration process is <strong>the</strong> same for traditional face-to-face, blended/hybrid<br />

and online courses.<br />
