14 Daniel Shepherd Maximum Impact in a Minimalist World By Angela Romeo Daniel Shepherd has a story to tell and path to take you there. This self-taught artist has a captivating body for work. Daniel creates collage work, abstract painting and minimalist blocks of color. He began drawing as a child. “The first time I can remember holding a pencil in my hand, I was sitting on my great grandmother’s lap, drawing together. We’d play a game called ‘Squiggles’ where one of us would draw a random shape, and it would be the other one’s job to make something out of it.” He followed other paths but the lessons learned as a child stayed with him. “Those days taught me how to think fast about getting an idea down quickly. It’s how I work today. I don’t like to plan ahead, I just go. Knowing when to stop is the hard part.” Daniel is based in Phoenix. “I found this area to be suited to my creativity. I love the solitude, the connection to nature and the support of community. My work is organic, I like to, I want to, I have to create in that way. By organic I mean I allow the material to guide me. You cannot force creativity. I’m told that when I’m not being creative for a period of time, I’m a nasty, rotten, horrible, grumpy person to be around. Sadly, it’s true,” chuckles Daniel. Daniel’s latest work “the colour box” is at Design 849, Palm Springs. The show features a series of minimal acrylic abstractions on wood panels. Meditative, moody, mesmerizing – Daniel describes the work as “Ambient Painting.” He defines the technique as painting with bright, saturated colors that collide with pastels or minimal abstractions to create a more expansive plaintive serenity. His intent is clear – to move people. . “Everyone has an idea what is art. I am only concerned that people look at my art and feel something. ‘Liking it’ or ‘getting it’ is not important.” “The concept of minimalist is hard to box in. It tends to draw you in but you are hard pressed to define it. ‘the colour box’ really opens up the concept. Visceral. The reaction needn’t be deeply intellectual. It just needs to be.” Daniel Shepherd’s minimalist style will surprise and mesmerize. “Perhaps not having rules in my head allows me to create with an innocence. The work is not naïve.
