18 ART & ABOUT Lon Michels MFA and Dr. Chandra founder of Combat Blindness International by Lon Michels and Todd Olson Palm Springs’ famed Uptown Design District had an exciting evening filled with cocktails, music, shopping, drawings and fun. While strolling up and down this celebrated shopping district, one could discover interesting and unique decor, fashion, ART, food, and drink, as more than 35 locally owned businesses opened their doors for the extended hours. The ‘Lighting of the Torches‘ at the corner of W. Via Lola (former home of the famed “Don the Beachcomber”), was a lot of fun, and really exciting, complete with Hollywood lights high in the sky. VALLEY OF THE ARTS “Greeks & Italians” by Lon Michels MFA The newly designated Upper Uptown Art District has four first class galleries, all within 1 block of each other. The names of these galleries starting North to South are as follows: Woodman Shimko Gallery, Arch Angel Gallery, Lon Michels Gallery and Haya Gallery. All are unique and support local artists, and artists from around the world. In fact, Haya, who is owner of Haya Gallery is from Haifa, Israel. Haya carries an array of her art, which is infused with color and vibrancy. She also carries a whole line of Frank Lloyd Wright art and collectibles. All four of these art galleries will have joint openings this coming season, for you to enjoy a gallery walk on 2nd Fridays of each month. The amount of art to enjoy in such a short distance, is stunning and inspiring, not to mention beautiful, with so much diversity and integrity, that the Upper Uptown Arts District on North Palm Canyon, has become the premiere location in the desert, to be seen and see all that the area offers. Come and experience why this is the NEW, HOT art district of the “Valley Of The Arts”. Just one example of a person seeking out this incredible area for the arts, with a sale of a painting, is the curator of the Victoria Albert Art Museum in London, England. One of Lon Michels MFA paintings titled “Greeks & Italians”, was sold to this collector.It is only fitting that this painting should go back to Europe, since that is where Lon painted this beautiful painting, in Athens Greece plein air. Lon gives so much, and it is said that by giving we receive. Lon’s latest gig was in the form of the key note address speaker for Combat Blindness International, in Madison WI. His speech was amazing and truly inspiring. Through Lon’s art, and lecture, with news feeds and powerpoint of his work dating back to age 7. He was able to help 18,000 people receive the gift of sight. Just imagine a grandparent seeing their grandchild for the 1st time, or a child seeing their parents for the 1st time. Lon was so grateful to share his experience strength and hope. Now we are able to bring help to those in need right here in our own Cochella Valley, with the Desert Blind and Handicapped Association www.desertblind.org . Please help if you are able, DBHA gives rides and transportation to over 400 blind and handicapped persons per month. In two short weeks the Desert Sun will hosting the Tramway Challenge www.makeadifferenceday.mydesert.com come join Lon and myself for this incredible fundraiser for the United Way. Lon has been training since January, running 5 miles every morning. I have been training my eyes to watch him run every morning! We hope to see our desert friends there for breakfast and participation in the run. Remember, all good things come to those who wait, artists just seem to have to wait a little longer! Happy season, and welcome home to the “Valley Of The Arts”, to all our snow bird friends. This is going to be an exciting fall,winter,spring season here in the “Valley Of The Arts”.
