MATCH 7
KENTUCKY 1, MOREHEAD STATE 0
September 20, 2007 - Lexington, Ky.
The Kentucky women’s soccer team pushed its
unbeaten streak to seven games with a 1-0 victory
against the Morehead State Eagles (1-4-0) at
the UK Soccer Complex Thursday night.
Alicia Browning got the Wildcats (6-0-1) on the
board in the 40th minute when Callie Lanphier
sent a crossing pass to Katie Fahey who flicked
the ball off her head to Browning. The freshman
from Ft. Wright, Ky. settled the ball and looped a
shot over the head of Eagle goalie Leslie King for
her fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 Wildcat
lead.
Despite the Kentucky victory, which gives the
Wildcats’ the longest unbeaten streak in the
league this season, head coach Warren Lipka wasn’t
pleased with his team’s outing for the second
straight match.
The Wildcat defense flexed its muscle and
helped freshman goalie Sydney Hiance record her
first collegiate shutout, limiting Morehead State
to just six shots and only one on goal.
Freshman Laura Novikoff led the Wildcats
with four shots while she and Nicola Holdsworth
shared top honors with three shots on goal each.
MATCH 8
KENTUCKY 0, #22 LOUISVILLE 0 (2OT)
September 23, 2007 - Louisville, Ky.
For the second straight season, the Kentucky
and No. 22 ranked Louisville women’s soccer
teams needed extra time to determine a winner,
however none was found at Cardinal Park on
Sunday as the two teams played to a 0-0 draw.
After a scoreless first 90 minutes, the Wildcats
(6-0-2) took control throughout most of the
extra 20 minutes and while they mounted a couple
legitimate scoring opportunities, they were
never able to find the back of the net.
Kentucky threatened to claim victory in the
second overtime when Megan Jones drew a foul
just outside the top of the 18-yard box with
barely approximately 5:00 left. Tara Herold took
the free kick but sent the ball just over the top of
the cross bar.
The Wildcats had the best chance to score of
either team in the first overtime when Sarah
Gaunt found herself with an open shot approximately
12 yards out with 1:08 left in the first 10-
minute overtime period, but fired a shot over the
top of the goal.
The Cardinals had the game’s first real scoring
opportunity in the 22nd minute when Kentucky
was called for a foul just above the 18-yard box.
Monique Gjini took the free kick for Louisville
but fired a shot right in the Wildcats’ defensive
wall.
The Cardinals had a golden opportunity to get
on the board with 20:40 left in the first half
when Gjini crossed a pass right in front of the
UK goal to Shannon Smyth who fired a shot
from point blank range, but UK freshman goalie
Sydney Hiance deflected the shot away to keep
the match scoreless.
Hiance kept the Cardinals out of the net again
in the 34th minute when Jen Avila found herself
on a breakaway. Hiance came off her spot and
met Avila at the top of the box where she tipped
Avila’s shot up just enough for Ashley Stack to
come over and clear the ball.
The Wildcats had their first scoring opportunity
late in the first half when Kristin Kover took
a corner kick with 3:10 left in the half and sent it
to a wide open Nathalie Bolder in front of the
Louisville goal. Bolder got a solid head on the
ball but pushed it just over the cross bar.
The shutout was Hiance’s second straight and
the Wildcats’ fifth this season.
MATCH 9
AUBURN 4, KENTUCKY 1
September 28, 2007 - Auburn, Ala.
After starting the season on an eight-game unbeaten
streak, the Kentucky women’s soccer team
(6-1-2, 0-1-0) dropped its first match of the SEC
season, a 4-1 loss to the Auburn Tigers (5-2-1, 1-
0-0).
The Tigers spotted Kentucky a 1-0 lead, and
then scored four unanswered goals en route to
the win. The four goals allowed by the Wildcats
was the most surrendered by a UK team since
losing a 4-2 match to the Florida Gators on Oct.
7, 2005.
The Wildcats scratched the board first when
Kelsey Fenix sent a ball over the top that was
chased down by Ashley Stack. Stack then pushed
a shot to the left of Auburn goalie Allison Whitworth
for her first collegiate goal and a 1-0 lead
in the 12th minute.
Auburn wasted not time answering when two
minutes later, Gabi Rivera found a loose ball at
the top of the six yard box and hit a shot just inside
the right post tying the game at 1-1.
Auburn struck immediately in the second half
when two minutes into the second frame, Kara
Kasten sent a perfect centering pass in front of
the UK goal that found a streaking Caitlin King
who finished strongly for a 2-1 Auburn lead.
The Tigers struck again at the 56:49 mark
when Jenni Prescott took a shot from 25 yards
out that floated over the outstretched arms of
UK goalie Sydney Hiance for a 3-1 Auburn lead.
Auburn extended its lead at the 61:32 mark
when Becca Howell laced a shot over Hiance that
ended up in the upper left 90 of the goal for a 4-
1 Auburn lead.
