MATCH 10 ALABAMA 2, KENTUCKY 1 September 30, 2007 - Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Kentucky women’s soccer team (6-2-2, 0- 2-0 SEC) surrendered a goal off a corner kick with :01 left in regulation en route to a 2-1 heartbreaking loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide (8-2-1, 1-0-1 SEC). With the score tied at 1-1 and the clock winding down, Alabama’s Rosie Petriello took a corner kick that Kailey Corken knocked home for the game-winner with one second left on the clock. For the first time this season, the Wildcats yielded the first goal. The Crimson Tide struck first with 8:29 left in the first half when Alex Butera picked up a loose ball in front of the Wildcat goal and pushed a shot just past UK goalie Sydney Hiance for the 1-0 Alabama lead. Kentucky tied it at 1-1 in the 62nd minute when Kate Hughes took a corner kick from Tara Herold and got a solid head on the ball for her third goal of the season. Bama had a couple opportunities to reclaim the lead but shots off the right post and the crossbar kept the score knotted at 1-1. The Wildcats had a golden opportunity to take their first lead of the day in the 87th minute when a Hughes’ header off a corner kick deflected off the left post and out of the box. For the second straight match the Wildcats fell behind 1-0. The Gamecocks took the first lead in the 17th minute, when Mary Worthen took a pass from Danila Monteiro and centered it up for Ashley Kirk who pushed it past Wildcat goalie Sydney Hiance just inside the right post. The Gamecocks controlled the tempo in the first half outshooting the Wildcats 8-2 while controlling the ball in Kentucky’s zone for the majority of the first 45 minutes. South Carolina threatened to extend their lead in the 49th minute off a set piece. Brittiny Rhoades took a free kick from just outside the right of the 18-yard box. She sent a pass into the middle to Worthen who chipped a shot at the goal, but quick reflexes by Hiance kept it a onegoal affair. The Wildcats had their best opportunity at scoring come in the 66th minute. Ashley Stack sent a ball down the far sideline that Sarah Gaunt chased down. Gaunt then crossed the ball back in front of the Gamecock goal where Laura Novikoff got a leg on the ball but knocked it off the left post. South Carolina slammed the door shut with 8:40 left in the match when Monteiro took a pass from Erin Sullivan and buried it just inside the left post for a 2-0 Gamecock lead. In a driving rain for the majority of the first half that left nearly an inch of water on the field, the UK women’s soccer team (6-4-2, 0-4-0 SEC) dropped their fourth straight match in league play, losing to No. 25 Florida (5-4-2, 1-2-0) 1-0. Florida got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. Karly Findorff sent a crossing pass that Stacy Bishop got a head on to knock the ball home for the lone goal of the match. The Gators owned the first half from an offensive standpoint, outshooting the Wildcats 6-1. However, the Wildcats had opportunities to attack, but were whistled offsides four times. Florida threatened to add an insurance goal in the 68th minute when Ashley Harris found herself one-on-one with UK goalie Sydney Hiance, but Hiance advanced on Harris cutting down the angle and knocked the ball away. The Wildcats had their best opportunity to score in the 75th minute when Kate Rowlands pushed a perfect centering pass to a streaking Sarah Gaunt, who took the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, took a couple dribbles and then pushed a shot past Florida goalie Katie Fraine, but the ball went just wide of the right post. Kentucky put together a flurry of shots over the next two minutes, getting a couple more good looks at the goal, but the Cats were never able to find the back of the net. MATCH 13 #14 TENNESSEE 1, KENTUCKY 0 October 12, 2007 - Lexington, Ky. After playing some of its best soccer of the season for 94 minutes, the Kentucky women’s soccer team (6-5-2, 0-5-0 SEC) gave up a goal 4:57 into the first overtime to drop a 1-0 heartbreaker to No. 14 Tennessee. The Lady Vols (8-2-2, 3-1-1) finally found the back of the net when Tanya Emerson took a loose ball rebound and poked it past UK goalie Sydney Hiance for the 1-0 victory. The first 90 minutes were played at a frenetic pace with both teams pushing the action up and down the field. The two squads combined for 25 shots with the Lady Vols firing off 14 shots to the Wildcats’ 11. The Wildcats had their best opportunity at breaking the scoreless tie in the 60th minute when Megan Jones ran down a ball on the touch line and sent a crossing pass to Callie Lanphier who took a shot from eight yards out but Jordan Falcusan was there to knock the ball away. The Cats threatened again in the 80th minute when Nicola Holdsworth flicked a ball over the top of the Tennessee defense that Laura Novikoff chased down and settled. However her shot from eight yards out was right at Tennessee goalie Jaimel Johnson. For the second straight match the Kentucky women’s soccer team (6-6-2, 0-6-0) outplayed its opponent offensively but had nothing to show for it as they dropped a 1-0 affair to the 18th ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Despite dominating the Bulldogs (12-1-1, 5- 0-1) offensively throughout the entire 90 minutes, the Wildcats were unable to notch a goal for the fourth straight match. UK out shot Georgia 16-10 (9-5 in the first half) including a 5-4 shot on goal discrepancy. The Bulldogs were also whistled for 15 fouls, to UK’s nine, giving the Cats several opportunities off set pieces, but still Kentucky came away empty handed. In the 10th minute, UK goalie Sydney Hiance misplayed a ball right in front of the Wildcat goal, trying to clear the ball. However, the ball deflected off Georgia’s Carrie Patterson who then poked it into an empty net for the early Bulldog lead. Kentucky had its best opportunity to even the score in the 72nd minute off a corner kick from Tara Herold. Herold sent the ball perfectly into the box where Kate Hughes got a solid head on the ball but bounced it off the crossbar. Kelly Miller got a shot off in the ensuing scrum in front of the goal, but it was blocked by a Georgia defender. It was a three weeks in the making, but the Kentucky women’s soccer team (7-6-2, 1-6-0) finally claimed its first win in conference play behind a 2-1 effort over the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks (8-7-1, 1-5-1). Kentucky broke its scoreless streak when Kelsey Fenix converted on a penalty kick nearly 22 minutes into the first half. The Lady Razorbacks were whistled for a foul in the box after a Tara Herold corner kick landed in front of the goal and two players collided prompting an immediate whistle from the official. Fenix’s goal snapped a streak of 416 straight minutes without a goal, the longest drought in school history. Arkansas answered in the 35th minute when Lindsay Patterson sent a long throw into the box where Kathleen Paulsen flicked the ball in from eight yards out for the equalizer. The Wildcats reclaimed the lead nearly three minutes (38:29) later on another successful penalty kick by Fenix. UK sent a ball into the box that Caitlin Coughlin went up to head but Arkansas goalie Brittni Williams was whistled for charging. The goal was Fenix’s second of the season and the first multi-goal effort of the senior’s career. The Wildcats were in control of the match the entire night offensively, outshooting the Lady Razorbacks 14-10, including seven shots on goal to Arkansas’ five, while posting eight corner kicks to the Lady ‘Backs’ one.
