After playing some of its best soccer of the season
for 94 minutes, the Kentucky women’s soccer
team (6-5-2, 0-5-0 SEC) gave up a goal 4:57 into
the first overtime to drop a 1-0 heartbreaker to
No. 14 Tennessee.
The Lady Vols (8-2-2, 3-1-1) finally found the
back of the net when Tanya Emerson took a
loose ball rebound and poked it past UK goalie
Sydney Hiance for the 1-0 victory.
The first 90 minutes were played at a frenetic
pace with both teams pushing the action up and
down the field. The two squads combined for 25
shots with the Lady Vols firing off 14 shots to the
Wildcats’ 11.
The Wildcats had their best opportunity at
breaking the scoreless tie in the 60th minute
when Megan Jones ran down a ball on the touch
line and sent a crossing pass to Callie Lanphier
who took a shot from eight yards out but Jordan
Falcusan was there to knock the ball away.
The Cats threatened again in the 80th minute
when Nicola Holdsworth flicked a ball over the
top of the Tennessee defense that Laura Novikoff
chased down and settled. However her shot from
eight yards out was right at Tennessee goalie
Jaimel Johnson.

For the second straight match the Kentucky
women’s soccer team (6-6-2, 0-6-0) outplayed its
opponent offensively but had nothing to show
for it as they dropped a 1-0 affair to the 18th
ranked Georgia Bulldogs.
Despite dominating the Bulldogs (12-1-1, 5-
0-1) offensively throughout the entire 90 minutes,
the Wildcats were unable to notch a goal for
the fourth straight match. UK out shot Georgia
16-10 (9-5 in the first half) including a 5-4 shot
on goal discrepancy. The Bulldogs were also
whistled for 15 fouls, to UK’s nine, giving the
Cats several opportunities off set pieces, but still
Kentucky came away empty handed.
In the 10th minute, UK goalie Sydney Hiance
misplayed a ball right in front of the Wildcat
goal, trying to clear the ball. However, the ball
deflected off Georgia’s Carrie Patterson who then
poked it into an empty net for the early Bulldog
lead.
Kentucky had its best opportunity to even the
score in the 72nd minute off a corner kick from
Tara Herold. Herold sent the ball perfectly into
the box where Kate Hughes got a solid head on
the ball but bounced it off the crossbar. Kelly
Miller got a shot off in the ensuing scrum in
front of the goal, but it was blocked by a Georgia
defender.

KENTUCKY 2, ARKANSAS 1

It was a three weeks in the making, but the
Kentucky women’s soccer team (7-6-2, 1-6-0) finally
claimed its first win in conference play behind
a 2-1 effort over the Arkansas Lady
Razorbacks (8-7-1, 1-5-1).
Kentucky broke its scoreless streak when
Kelsey Fenix converted on a penalty kick nearly
22 minutes into the first half. The Lady Razorbacks
were whistled for a foul in the box after a
Tara Herold corner kick landed in front of the
goal and two players collided prompting an immediate
whistle from the official. Fenix’s goal
snapped a streak of 416 straight minutes without
a goal, the longest drought in school history.
Arkansas answered in the 35th minute when
Lindsay Patterson sent a long throw into the box
where Kathleen Paulsen flicked the ball in from
eight yards out for the equalizer.
The Wildcats reclaimed the lead nearly three
minutes (38:29) later on another successful
penalty kick by Fenix. UK sent a ball into the
box that Caitlin Coughlin went up to head but
Arkansas goalie Brittni Williams was whistled for
charging. The goal was Fenix’s second of the season
and the first multi-goal effort of the senior’s
career.
The Wildcats were in control of the match the
entire night offensively, outshooting the Lady
Razorbacks 14-10, including seven shots on goal
to Arkansas’ five, while posting eight corner kicks
to the Lady ‘Backs’ one.
